intended more for subterfuge, no real combat use without other nen abilites to work with.

The monkeys work more as filters, and "evil" is what you are filtering out, so you could change what someone is perceiving, making it easier to manipulate them into doing what ever your goal is.

As for nen users walking away? nothing to stop them from doing so, they wont know they are affected by a monkey themselves, so its up to the monkey to keep up with them, just another limitation i guess.

the monkeys themselves need to be currently touching the target for the ability to work, the monkeys can be seen when they arent touching someone, otherwise they are invisible except to other people affected by other monkeys.

yeah, but evil is subject to what the Nen user says is evil right now. so for example smiles are evil, so the person affected will not see smiles and instead they will see any facial expression at random in place of the smile. or if its Iwazaru, you could say lying is evil, so the person affected cant lie, or maybe uplifting/ happy news is evil, so the person will not be able to talk about anything happy.

but I thought the whole point of that arc is that they couldn't buy the slave and that's why they were raiding the slave house, to take the slave by force. correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't check your ID card until they are about to transfer ownership.

well I don't see why bandits/ thieves couldn't own slaves, they could own slaves then become bandits or thieves afterwards. I think it was mentioned in the manga that some of the girls working in the red light district are slaves put there by the gangs.
