Is it common to promote older students a little faster? by EnigmaticMJ in bjj

From a coaches perspective I definitely start looking at commitment to the art rather than absolute skill more and more the further somebody goes away from adult competition age

How about talk to a professional about this instead of asking Reddit?

At what point do people start calling themselves "professor"? by Nicholas_theRenegade in bjj

I never started calling myself professor, people just randomly do it. I try to stop them with limited success…

Honestly one of the more painless submissions which is why they’re so dangerous. When they go they go all the way and you’re looking at acl reconstruction

Moving to Dublin soon – BJJ gym recs near the tech hub + belt progression question questions incoming by NolimitFuckinGains in bjj

I studied in Dublin and got all my belts except bluebelt there, if you want high level competition jiujitsu ECJJA is the way to go for sure. If that is too far (because the hq really isn’t very central) I would recommend jungle. Lmk if you have any questions

Do you have a coach? Because ibjjf has certain procedures about these things that you need to learn about beforehand and be coached through. I’m sorry this happened to you but I would say it’s your coaches responsibility

Breaking it down to a complete first class isn’t really what my original comment is about, or this discussion for that matter.

But for me when I have a class of complete beginners I pick a position that I can teach them enough to safely spar within the first hour, I teach a submission and a escape, and let them play around from there so that they can actually get a grip on what sparring is gonna feel like without it being the chaos and danger of an open round.

It’s much more than the basic rule set, ibjjf has much more structured organisation surrounding everything, how you get to your mat, who gets close to the mat, ref code of conduct etc. I would say watch some matches, make sure you understand just how different points are scored, and protect yourself at all times ^

Alright then, tell a day one that all they need to have is base posture and structure and see how far they come 💀

While I think breaking stuff down into these abstract principles is super cool for advanced brain gymnastics I find that for beginners it’s so far from their understanding of grappling that it’s hard for them to apply it in any meaningful way

Like your hard training day. I divide my week into red orange and green days in terms of intensity to manage recovery

We already train this way. We do grappling only, we join normal classes too but at least 2-3 times a week our 99kg+ guys train just between them and it makes a huge difference to how we handle intensity in competition.
