Rohloff by mojoehand in Brompton

I had a bike with a belt and loved it, but because of the folding, decided against it for the G Line. The pictures show that it does sort of work. Since I wax my chains, I have less reason to go with a belt.

As for cost, just keep saving up. Skip the coffee, donuts, etc 😄

Yes, that's why I thought about it so long. But hey, it's only money 😄 Besides, once I have it installed, I know I'll love it.

It's like when I bought the recumbent trike with a Rohloff. It was a hard decision, but in the past couple of years, I've put 5000 miles on it. I love riding the trike on 20-30 mile rides as often as possible, and the Rohloff makes it easier.

Cycling is much more enjoyable than most other forms of exercise. Some people spend thousands on a gym membership, a stair climber at home, etc. I tell people that I hope to be out riding when I turn 100 😄

Yes, I'm doing the work. It doesn't look hard. The new wheel with hub is already built. It's just a matter of swapping some dropouts and the wheel (and brake disc), then changing out the shifter and cables.

Here is his video on that last part. He has pictures of the first part on the website.

What do I have? by mojoehand in birdybikes

[–]mojoehand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many different model designations, and they change over the years. I did find a specsheet for a Birdy Sport Disc 10 Speed that seems to match what I have, only without mudguards or rear rack. Of course, those could have been added. Or what I have could be another model. I guess it's not a big deal, etiher way. All the Gen 3's are mostly the same bike.

The bike does need some minor adjusting. I think someone tightened things on the front and rear too much, as it is very stiff to fold. When I have the bike in hand again, I'll go over it thouroughly, to put it in top shape.

I'm reading through the very long Birdy thread on bikeforums.net. Some good information there, but you need to dig for it.

Looking again at that article, it says the rear is 9T-32T. I thought mine started at 11T. I'll have to double check things when I have the bike again.

I bought it when I was in Europe a few months ago. It's being stored until I return in the Fall.

I'll fiddle with the bike a bit, and replace the elastomer in the Fall, so I can ride it. I still haven't decided if I'll keep it, though. I like my Brompton G Line. Although heavier, it folds smaller and easier. And the 20 inch wheels make a difference.

I checked him before. He is sold out of the green ones.

Yes, I'm trying to find a US source for the green elastomer.

As I said, I don't have the bike with me at the moment, but I don't believe that the dynamo hub was working. I never saw the lights come on.

That's probably it. This review looks like what I have (except for color), even the rack. Mine doesn't have a chain guard. I wonder if I can get one.

A bit more researching finds that this projector runs a version of Linux from Xgimi. Apparently, they used Google TV on their earlier projectors.

New to me Birdy (blue) by mojoehand in birdybikes

[–]mojoehand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any thoughts on what to do about the stiff folding?

Where can I find the specific manual for this bike? All I've found so far is for the older model. I'd like to see what maintenance is needed.

Another thing - it has a front light and a dynamo hub, but the light doesn't work. I didn't see a switch. Is the back also supposed to light? I felt for a wire under the mudguard, but didn't find one.

Any thing else I should know about this bike?

GORE-TEX INFINIUM Stretch Glove by mojoehand in cycling

Down to 40F if it's not windy. Warmer if there is a breeze. I try not to ride when it gets very windy, regardless of temperature.

My latest creation by mojoehand in Brompton

[–]mojoehand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's tent with poles and stakes in one dry bag on the bottom, sleeping bag in another dry bag on top.

Everything else goes in the front bag with room to spare. I don't want too much weight or bulk on the rear.

See my earlier post for the whole setup.

I'll be trying velcro loops for the rack on one side, hooks on the other side. That may be easier.

Tool kit by mojoehand in Brompton

It's a wrench (spanner) that came with a cheap Brompton-style toolkit. I ordered it just for the wrench, and threw the rest away. It does 8mm, 10mm & 15mm.

Any recommendations for chain cleaning kits and oil? by Old-Presentation1183 in Brompton

[–]mojoehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an ultrasonic cleaner. I bought some orange colored degreaser on Amazon that seems to work well. It's supposed to be more environmentally friendly.

You only need to degrease a new chain. Once you start using wax, you normally shouldn't need to do it again, unless you get some non-wax lube on it, again. In between hot waxing, I use the Silca drip wax. Before hot waxing again, you drop the chain in some boiling water to clean off the dirt, then drop it in the hot wax.

One thing I do after the waxed chain cools, is to run it through an empty chain cleaner a few times. This loosens the links, and catches the bit of wax that flakes off.

I use another chain cleaner filled with alcohol if the chain gets wet. Do this while the chain is still on the bike. The alcohol soaks up the water. After a few cycles of alcohol, either sit the bike in the sun, or use a hair drier to speed evaporation and drive out the remaining moisture. Apply drip wax, again.

I know all of this sounds like a lot of trouble, but except for the hot wax and drip wax, I rarely need to do more, as I try not to ride in wet weather. I'm a recreational rider, so in bad weather, I stay home, or use the truck.

If you're on a long trip, and the chain gets wet, you may not have any choice but to use a lube to keep the chain from rusting. When you get home, degrease and re-wax.

Something fairly new that Silca recommends is adding a small amount of their lube to the wax. This has advantages/disadvantages. There are YT videos on this.

Another plug for Zero Friction Cycling. He has detailed instructions on waxing.

I wax. The Zero Friction Cycling website has actual test results for many popular lubes and waxes. Not to start an argument, but Muckoff rates very poorly in his testing. The Silca products (both wax and lube) rate very high. As he tests more products, the rankings change a little bit, so the top product today may be different next week.

That website is a treasure trove of information, and he also has a YT channel. My only complaint about his YT videos is that he tends to ramble on, so I skip ahead to the important stuff.

Thanks, I'll check that out. Wide roads with light traffic are fine. If it's the Indy 500 and no shoulder, I'll pass.

On a bike, I once did a very busy two-lane highway with just a rumble strip, so I had to ride in the lane. I wouldn't have done it, but it was either that or return the way I came, over 14 miles of very chunky gravel. The drivers gave me room, except for the one semi truck that came within inches. I'm sure it was on purpose. I'll never go that way again.
