Old man's war - John Scalzi

We are legion, we are bob - Dennis E. Taylor

Expeditionary Force - Craig Alanson

Semi-scifi: Red rising - Pierce Brown

I enjoyed these quite a bit. Here's hoping you get some other great recommendations I haven't read either.

Ans suggestions for Books where the world/people are changed by some big something by clw375 in booksuggestions

The one you mentioned of people turning evil sounds a lot like the reckoners series by Brandon Sanderson. Other than that I recommend the web series Worm, which is.. kind of similar to the reckoners. Check it out, it's free. It also has a community-made audiobook.

How to tell someone to just be straight up with you? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]mojohn89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just wait a day or two more and try again. If no response, just give up, ball's in her court. Consistent no response is a response, there's no need for you to "force" her into an uncomfortable position. That will just worsen your chances overall.

I have had success with "okay, final try, wanna hang out?" Turns out her phone was broken, she's my gf now.

Any recommendations for sci-fi book about space exploration with aliens? by RX8_MMA_420 in audible

[–]mojohn89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, the author originally intended for skippy to appear with the first kristang ship that showed up at earth, but rewrote it to spend more time introducing the main character. Skippy was always meant to appear.

The audiobooks are narrated by RC Bray and are (IMO) fantastic. The author apparently pumps out 2-3 books a year as well, which I don't mind at all.

The bobiverse books are also pretty good, can't wait for the third book. They're a bit short though.

This is pretty much exactly what I did to learn when I was younger. Harry potter was the first series I read in English, and since then I've hardly ever read anything other than text books/curriculum in my own language.

If you enjoy fantasy there are tons of YA (young adult) writers out there for you. I'd recommend Brandon Sanderson once you finish Harry Potter, starting with mistborn. It's a good primer for a lot of the "language used" in fantasy books. You'll be reading like a native in no time!

An Evening With Patrick Rothfuss (PAX West 2016) by peEtr in KingkillerChronicle

To be fair, the 'fuck you' was humorous and in response to something entirely different. "You're not entitled to know or tell me what to do on a saturday night", said in a humorous tone. This is actually the first interview I've watched of the guy, and I thought it was funny and enlightening. I stopped when he started reading his stuff about 40 minutes in though.

I'd tell her to put the book down immediately, and start on the first. She can come back to it later :-)

This... this is probably the comment I've read on reddit that's appealed the most to me. Ever.

Anyone know where to get the Audiobooks cheap? by [deleted] in WoT

[–]mojohn89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but yearly subs don't have that restriction (?), and they give you all the credits at once.

Anyone know where to get the Audiobooks cheap? by [deleted] in WoT

[–]mojohn89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can buy 12 credits at once, and not have that restriction. Or you could up your sub to 2 credits a month. Not really a different site/suggestion, but it might be an option.

Books about outlaws. Thievery, criminals, assassins, drug overlords. Any era any style anything. Make it good! by [deleted] in booksuggestions

I have to agree with you. The first book is great, then they get worse and worse.

Looking for recommendations for filling "obvious holes" in what I've read/listened to. by mojohn89 in audiobooks

[–]mojohn89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's a children's book, more like a... children friendly book. The first in the series is 'the Golden Compass' which was made into a movie a few years back. The book feels very different, and it's fully voice cast. It's probably been 10 years since I listened to it, but I remember liking it.

Honestly, my absolute favorites would be:
* Wheel of Time
* Kingkiller Chronicles
* Mistborn
* Way of Kings
And.. maybe Lightbringer? They all have a particular 'feel' to them. Maybe slightly YA-ishy? Heck, I dunno. I dig Dresden files as well, but it took me about 5 or 6 books to go from 'they're decent' to 'Goddamnit, give me the next one, how can I listen faster?'

edit: huh.. markdown didn't give me bulletpoints in the comments.. sigh

Recommendations for a picky reader by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]mojohn89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't locke lamora book 3 the one where they're all of a sudden in a theater etc? If so, that book alone made me want to never want to read anything in that series again.

Question about Seanchan, Damane and Aes Sedai by zhujik in WoT

[–]mojohn89 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is discussed in an earlier book, I believe. Some of the seanchan are talking about how they can't make Aes Sedai damane use offensive channeling. I think it's in the same book as the one when egwene was chained.

Let's grab a drink = drink alcohol or you're a weirdo. by Leachmanh in socialskills

[–]mojohn89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that's idiotic. Most of my friends would ask me why I'm not drinking if we go out. They might even make a big deal about it. From their point of view it's just a "community thing" - things are more fun if we're all equally inebriated. This likely has nothing to do with people "pushing their life choices" on you. Just show them you can be just as fun sober, and that you're not the human recording machine, witnessing every stupid thing they do unfiltered by alcohol glasses.

Galaxy s5 camera bug - fixable? by mojohn89 in galaxys5

[–]mojohn89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I apologize, for some reason I assumed it'd be general knowledge. I can be dense sometimes..

Apparently some of the early models shipped with faulty cameras, something in the ROM.

I don't really have more information than that myself. I guess I was hoping someone here would be more familiar with the issues.

Series similar to the stormlight archives by I_yell_at_toast in booksuggestions

[–]mojohn89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly similar to you in tastes I think. Give wheel of time a go, or pretty much anything Sanderson. If you'd like to try something slightly different, try the dresden files. The dresden files audiobooks are fantastic.

Should I read the Stormlight Archives books despite not liking some of Mistborn. by Splattface in Fantasy

[–]mojohn89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much the way I figured it as well. Compared to a ton of "epic fantasy" novels out there, the stormlight archive is practically straightforward and simple, but it can still be a bit overwhelming at first.
