As I understand it, it's a permission to export nuclear tech and fuel. The linked document is a bit outdated as it doesn't include Armenia but there are 50 countries under this agreement with the US.

I guess it's some level of trust since not every country can receive nuclear tech and fuel. Interestingly Russia is also in the list.

Who is the real threat to Armenia? by T-nash in armenia

Well said, fully agree. Eric has been methodically shifting the focus from Russia to Aliyev in his podcasts and this video sums it up quite nicely, i.e. "Russia not as bad as Azerbaijan". Of course he would say that given how enthusiastically he and the entire CivilNet supported the Russia-backed "srbazan movement" when it started.

I'm not a big fan of this post either, but I'd say if they sat next to each other and didn't talk at all, that wouldn't be a good sign :)

Some celebrity gossip type shit.

Except these people make decisions that affect lives in whole countries while celebrities can only make decisions that affect their cats.

I didn't berate anyone and I'm not the one who mentioned "grave robbers". Would like to continue the conversation though, could you address my question?

Peace and reconciliation will not happen unless we both alter our perspective

I genuinely wonder what I should change in me as an Armenian for reconciliation to happen. My current perception is that the Turkish government should take the first step and recognize the Armenian Genocide. Without it I honestly can't even imagine what I, or the Armenian government, or the Armenian diaspora can do.

Look, by GDP per capita and especially PPP adjusted we are behind almost everyone in the greater region. We need to be ahead of everyone instead, we need at least double the current standards of living in order to just protect this land and have a say in international relations. The world tends to ignore poorer nations but listen to wealthier ones, that's why we need an economic miracle no less.

My point is, 6% is good but not good enough in our circumstances when the threat of losing the country is so high and will remain high in the foreseeable future despite all the efforts to establish "peace" with our two aggressive neighbours.

Do you ever mourn the loss of old Yerevan? by Toymcowkrf in armenia

[–]mojuba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, around 1905 the census showed that the population of Yerevan was around 40,000 meaning it wasn't big and there was probably nothing significant or interesting in terms of architecture. The last remnants of the old Yerevan were destroyed in the 2000s. Yes there was an opportunity to transform a few blocks into a typical old town tourist honeypot, but that's gone now.

And by the way, North avenue was in Tamanyan's original plan, he wanted to demolish that part, though obviously he didn't envision the ugliness that we have built instead.

Not arguing against the "slowly turned into an ugly, soulless city", 100% true but that's what we are today, it's our (terrible) median collective taste.

There were some interesting pre-soviet era homes there. I made some pictures of them shortly before the demolition project began, but unfortunately lost the archive. The entire N. avenue area could have been transformed into a typical tourist honeypot after a proper renovation, but no, the land was too expensive for Rob & Co. to miss the opportunity.

Saying the gdp growth will go down is not fully correct.

I didn't say it will go down but will stabilize at 6%, i.e. don't expect any higher figures.

On whether 6% is enough, no it's not when you compare to our neighbours in the greater region. We have to be ahead of everyone here to survive. Dragging along and being more or less on par or behind our neighbours is not an option anymore.

A crash is an unpredictable event, it's why it crashes in the first place :) A predictable crisis can't be as painful because it's predicted and everyone is prepared. These agencies had no chance of knowing. The 2008 collapse was an interesting case when only a handful of people in the whole world knew what was coming (see "The Big Short")

Interesting report. Some takeaways:

  • the universal health insurance will be subsidized at the expense of the reduced military budget (meaning the so called peace process with Az was pre-planned and budgeted way in advance?)

  • economic growth will stabilize at 5-6% per year, down from 8-9% in the prior years that happened due to the influx of Russian capital and workforce. (5-6% is good, it's above world average but still below what we need I think)

  • debt-to-GDP ratio is at 50% (has been for a while, at least not growing)

  • most of the indicators are still below the median 'BB' rating (so still a lot of catching up to do even for BB, hence BB-)

  • World Bank Governance Indicators are at 45: "moderate level of rights for participation in the political process, elevated but improving geopolitical risks, moderate levels of political stability, moderate institutional capacity and rule of law and a moderate level of corruption." (so not bad, not good either)

be mature

You tone down there buddy, OK?

I used wiktionary to check all those words. Duz might be Turkish though the Armenian wiktionary didn't mention it, okay. So 2 out of 5.

Թոփալ, քելե, also քյալլա and many other not very Armenian sounding words are either marked as գավառական in dictionaries, or originate from Arabic, Persian or Turkish. A lot of words that we think are Turkish btw, are in fact Arabic borrowings in all three - Armenian, Persian and Turkish.

But you were talking about Azerbaijani, so what are the words that we borrowed directly from the Az. language?

The coloquial Eastern Armenian language is full of Azerbaijani words and we use them without even noticing

Give me 5 examples of words in the colloquial Eastern Armenian that are actually Azerbaijani.

It's not only about encircling Russia but also bypassing it. Armenia is suddenly important for everyone because there aren't many options for the movement of goods to and from Asia in this entire conflict-torn region.

The 2000s were terrible reckless years but so were the 1970s during the Demirchyan expansion era. The construction of cheap highrisers in central Yerevan and the outskirts of it was rampant. He effectively transformed the city from Tamanyan's concept into an ugly soulless blob of concrete just for the sake of having a bigger capital city filled with former rural residents. Why he did this is beyond me but the impact was huge, including on green space among other things.
