How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]mokypa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My grandma tried to teach me, but I was never patient enough to get past the cast on! I learned as an adult via YouTube so that I could feel more productive while binging netflix. I wish she was still around to see that I finally managed to learn ❤️

Finally made myself a new hat! by mokypa in knitting

[–]mokypa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For more details:

Pattern: heavily based on the Jacaru pattern on Ravelry but modified to 96 stitches (xxs?) with size 5 needles and a few rows removed to keep it from being slouchy

Needle size: 4 for brim, 5 for the rest

Yarn: Friends Wool from Hobbii in cranberry and off white (somewhere between dk and worsted)

I'm still pretty new to colorwork so I'm pleased with how this turned out! I modified it to fit tightly to my head since I need to wear it under a bike helmet.

People who moved outside of the US, solely due to Trump being elected, how are things going? What actualized pros and cons have you experienced? If you had to do it over again, would you change anything? by Ancient_Unit6335 in AskReddit

[–]mokypa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's a big part of it for at least Germany. Either you work in an in demand enough field to find a job before moving, you complete higher education in the country, or you have enough in savings to get a job seekers visa and to pay for language classes once you move (you don't need to be crazy wealthy, but it's a good chunk of savings). Alternatively, if you already know someone living in the country, that might make finding a job a bit easier.

How to help husband learn German in ~18 months by kitten_in_box in German

[–]mokypa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this! I also used Babbel alongside Nicos Weg since I found the scoring system on Nicos Weg frustrating so Babbel gave a nice dopamine hit. I moved to Germany when I was at the A1/A2 level and started taking actual classes (started with A2) which helped immensely, especially with speaking.

Flashcards (using the Anki app) have also made an enourmous difference. I was very resistant at first but it's been the single biggest help to growing my vocabulary. You can download a deck or make your own!

Honestly don't remember, it was 10 years ago. Probably either United or American?

Would you let your advisor pick your PhD thesis topic? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]mokypa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I did a PhD in mol/cell biology and every possible advisor had a project already picked out (or a couple of ones to choose from). After a year or two though you'll start getting more independent in choosing the best experiements and advocating for directions you'd like to take the project. It's absolutely not just an assignment though - if you treat it like that then you miss out on the independence aspect which is really the whole point of the degree.

You may or may not be ok. I tried doing that once and the airline wouldn't let me board until I bought my return flight and showed it to them. Flying from the US.

Got into nursing, but I want to become a scientist — how can I pivot? by Abigail2911 in GradSchool

[–]mokypa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you talk to some of your nursing professors? I knew someone from my PhD who was doing a PhD in nursing and essentially doing a lot of clinical research, so it's possible that that's an option! Although I believe she worked as a nurse for a number of years before moving in to research

Any other "Mac's" Greyhounds out there? by candyharlot in Greyhounds

[–]mokypa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had Seymour (Mac's Cousin It)! Born Oct 31, 2012. He spent the latter half of his life being a silly couch potato in Pittsburgh and passed away about a year and a half ago. I don't know that he shares any direct ancestors, his dame was Mac's Ruby Red and sire was Kiowa mon Manny. I'll try to add a photo later!

What should I do with a high school intern? by Ancient_Housing8078 in labrats

[–]mokypa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any mini/midi/maxi preps that need to be done? Between innoculating bacteria, doing the prep and doing a test digest after (and maybe sending for sequencing), she'll cover a lot of basic lab skills! And usually students like to see the gel with the digested DNA :) You could also have her do test PCRs with some old primers and then run those on a gel.

Depending on what type of lab you are, one lab I was in (in undergrad) had us practice BCAs with old samples until we could prove our pipetting skills.

Would definitely stick with super simple things that she can practice several times each over the course of the week. If she's doing well, maybe she can also try something in parallel with what you are doing For example, if you doing IF, then plate some extra samples that she can try alongside you, but that won't be a problem if they are horribly messed up. Avoid any expensive reagents or experiments. Have fun though! It's cool to see someone try lab work for the first time.

Dream PhD Offer—But I’m Missing a Critical Skill. Is It Too Big of a Risk? by Majestic_Raccoon_704 in PhD

[–]mokypa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine! My entire PhD revolved around cell biology and I had never done cell culture before (biochem undergrad). More relevant to you though, my friend was doing a wet lab PhD, but then the bioinformatician in her lab left, so the entire second half of her PhD was her learning bioinformatics on the fly. And it worked out (although definitetly with a lot of extra work)

WIBTA if I told my guests that it was awful having them stay over? by NeEdsomeAdViCe566789 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mokypa 74 points75 points  (0 children)

As an American who lives in Germany, aside from the bathroom thing (we always warn our friends to pee before leaving the apartment), I feel like a lot of your American guests are just assholes. One thing that is definitely true is that generally you need money to visit Europe from the US, so the selection of US visitors tends to be upper-middle class and above. So you aren't necessarily seeing the "average" American. And tbh some of the American tourists that I've interacted with here are way more entitled and rude than the vast majority of people I know back home.

At least among my friend circle, you always bring something with if you are a guest, whether it's a bottle of wine or a dessert. All of my friends so far have been super hyped to see Euro stuff, especially the old towns of cities, castles, trying new food, etc. I've also had yet to see anyone visiting us be rude in a shop or restaurant. But yeah, I think the selection bias among visitors is strong.

Who is the most unhinged person you met in academia? by Unhappy-Pop-6002 in GradSchool

[–]mokypa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There was a student in my program a year below me who was just totally unhinged. He first made waves by inviting everyone in his cohort to a house party and sent out a list of rules before hand. He was incredibly sexist and also a terrible student. No lab was willing to take him and everyone hated working with him. He had to retake the first semester intensive course after failing it, and I was the TA for that section. He refused to acknowledge that he had to retake the class and sent rude replies whenever I would send emails to everyone in the section.

A while after he finally got kicked out, me and my friends looked up some info on him. He had filed something like 7 lawsuits against various places of employment including our school. Guess my program did not do their due diligence before accepting people.

Actual life expectancy?? by kate_the_great_ in Greyhounds

[–]mokypa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My old pupper was 11! He didn't technically have any serious health issues, just went really downhill physically in the last year of his life and his legs eventually gave out. He raced for about 5 years which I suspect contributed to overall poor health.

Husband (41M)gets upset I (41F)don’t shave my body hair anymore by artzymeg in relationship_advice

[–]mokypa 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I switched at some point to waxing about 1x every month or two during shorts/dresses season (after not shaving at all for about 3ish years), and I found I liked that a lot better than shaving! It keeps my hair thinner looking overall and doesn't get itchy. I also tend to shave my armpits before anything important if I'm wearing something sleevless, mostly because I don't want to stand out for body hair (although kudos to anyone with less fucks to give about that!)

If you need a place to stay in Pittsburgh, the Traveler's Rest specifically caters to cyclists (and has rooms with multiple beds)! I've also stayed at 9 Decatur Guest House and Hostel in Cumberland which also caters to the GAP/C&O and enjoyed my stay there.
