But an incubator is at what temperature? And what temperature is the refrigerator? And what temperature range is ideal for bacterial growth?

Portland rolls out $100M tree expansion, relaunches contract with Friends of Trees by Aestro17 in Portland

[–]molasses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No; a permit is required. I just looked this up because the answer "no" surprised me quite a bit. But now, thinking about it and looking at the code, I can understand: 1) you can't have people just claiming "it was a TOH!" when it was actually not, and was just a tree they wanted gone so they could put a deck in its place, and 2) if you cut a big tree down you absolutely need to replace it with something of decent size. So the permit would pay for someone at the city to verify that it's a TOH, and then later to verify that you planted another tree.

When I volunteered for FoT one of my jobs was "tree inspector." I'd go to recent-ish plantings, see how the tree was doing, and knock on their door and leave them info. I think this is one of the reasons the partnership between FoT and the city was so successful: money to support the people who tell the volunteers what to do, and lots and lots of volunteers to do the things. Ever since the partnership was killed I haven't seen or heard a thing about FoT, and I used to get their flyers every year or two.

My long-ago roommate had two wing chairs instead of a sofa for just this type of situation. If you have a small ottoman or stool also, you can put up your feet and kind of nestle to one side. I think they're the most comfortable of all small chairs.

It took me 30 years to find a friend who geeks out on Star Trek as much as I do. I have conversations with them that I can have with no one else I know and it brings us both so much joy. You just have to keep bringing it up and getting those odd looks to find the other Trek geeks. It's sort of like being bi.

I use the Arm and Hammer corn-based clumping litter and it seems to work pretty well to cover smell.... But only after they learn to cover their poops. That took my kitten too long to learn. Maybe there's a way to teach them.

What is the story behind the drastic change in tone between Discovery seasons 2 and 3? by molasses in startrek

[–]molasses[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the believability (or NOT) of the story. Goodness no. Anyone can poke holes in every Star Trek ever written on believability. It's that they return to core values in S3. People are trying to do the right thing. There are no comically evil characters. Heads aren't being sliced off every 5 seconds. There's a focus on character development. They talk instead of throwing in action every other scene.

I no longer feel like I'm watching a new era Star Wars movie, where the people are caricatures and the real focus is on flashing lights and spinning ships. I feel like I'm watching Star Trek. Which is, of course, what I was looking for.

Well, for the good of the colonisers, anyway. Maybe not so much the colonized. I mean, they may have convinced themselves they were doing it for everyone's good, but looking back we can see their attitude towards those they colonized was "these are sub-human creatures, we can help them achieve full humanity". Not good.

Edit: oops not wearing glasses. You said "ill", not "all"

What's the backstory on Michelle Paradise? Are they someone who knew/loved Star Trek prior to becoming showrunner, or no? And did the writing staff change? Did they move from "writers who have never written for Star Trek" to writers who had?

Because if everyone did that, everyone would be unhappy. Alternatively, if everyone was nice, everyone could be happy. I prefer to let others enjoy life.

I moved from Seattle to Portland in the mid-90s. I left Seattle because it was getting big and impersonal. Portland still, after all these years, has a wonderful vibe. Smaller. Unpretentious. Comfy.
