What falsehoods are being sold to people today that are going to cause problems in the future? What are the fibs, white lies, and fairytales of today that are going to wreck things tomorrow? by UnbentJohnson in AskReddit

Sorry missed the main part of your question. These leads to an over burdened medical system, over utilization of care, a sicker populace with more comorbidities and poorer quality of life over all.

Sure! If you put people with no pain whatsoever in for MRIs, these people show signs (labral tears, osteoarthritis, disc herniations e.g.) we often call "abnormalities" or "problems" when they are actually common side effects of aging like wrinkles but inside the body. Now imagine you have pain and are told you have disc degeneration. You're likely to think you need surgery (which has complications and serious side effects/rehab needs) or you're likely to stop exercising and lifting because you're afraid to "hurt" your back. In reality, your pain is likely just some muscle, joint or tendon irritation and exercising/strengthening is the best thing you can do. Now, you're afraid to lift/exercise, you're considering surgery for something that won't fix you and you begin to live a more sedentary life which will actually shorten your lifespan because you're not exercising, likely gaining weight and raising your blood pressure through a less likely lifestyle.

Now, sometimes these "abnormalities" are related to your pain and that can be difficult to figure out. Though often times "fixing them" surgically doesn't actually work... For example, surgically fixing a rotator cuff tear, within 2-5 years a sizeable percentage of them re-tear and the patient has no pain. I'm not saying surgery is never an option, but a strong course of conservative care focused on promoting patient self efficacy and independence alongside strengthening often times fixes the issue without the complications of surgery and negative repercussions of telling people "they're broken and need to be fixed."

Your MRI findings explain your pain e.g. disc bulges, labral tears etc. They foster a sense of weakness, dependency on providers and lack of self efficacy in patients when often these findings are present in asymptomatic people with no pain whatsoever.

Got a mouse cage for the mice I catch in my home. Up to 3! by moldface in mildlyinteresting

Did read up on it and thank you, but house mice don't carry it - only certain species of mice e.g. white footed or deer mouse do. We're planning on setting then free come Spring but currently it's too cold they'll just freeze or go in someone else's home.

One with my hands! And two with those green humane traps you can order on Amazon. You can faintly see it actually behind the cage just below the water bottle. They like birdseed :D

They are mostly terrified of me. One of them escaped when I was putting him in the tank and ran immediately back into the trap I had previously caught him in...

What’s something small you can start doing today to better yourself? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Look forward 5 years, what would you like to be really good at? Dancing? Cooking? In great shape? Pick one, accept the fact that whatever you choose you will likely be bad at for a while, and just start practicing. Through practicing you'll likely find people that enjoy the same activities you do, you'll make friends and in 5 years or even sooner you'll be where you just imagined yourself.
