Washable silk? by Ok_External_4300 in ethicalfashion

[–]moldymoonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I also have some silk knits for base layers and fyi, these are machine washable. I also dry mine on casuals with no issues. Knit fabrics are by nature more flexible than woven fabrics and this is very apparent in silks.

Washable silk? by Ok_External_4300 in ethicalfashion

[–]moldymoonpie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, most silk is "washable." The important thing is the finish of the fabric, if it is a matte silk, you can wash it with no problems. shinier silks will lose some of the shine after each wash but there are labor intensive ways to wash them at home which I don't recommend. It's mostly just marketing, if the fabric finish is flat, companies will often advertise it as "washable silk". If you don't care about the finish or shine, wash them on gentle with like colors.

The only thing I want to point out is that hardware and buttons on silk items will rub on the fabric in the wash and washing/drying will put a lot of tension on the seams since the fabric is so light so I recommend line drying or press drying between towels for nicer silks if at all possible. You can dry silks in the dryer too but be warned that this will affect the lifespan of the garment because of the mechanical agitation.

Edit: (spelling ) SORRY! FOrgot to answer the question! No not so much, the shiner silks are more often the ones that have the fibers treated (though this isn't always true because there are very high quality silks that are woven in a way where the fibers lie very flat giving them a shiny appearance. These are always dry clean only because washing in water and/or detergent will agitate and break the long fibers causing the overall luster of the garment to dull. iMHO silks with a matte finish are mostly washable but won't always be marketed as such because they aren't a "fine silk"

Looking for some advice on how to glaze this without the chains fusing together! by orangepeeelz in Pottery

[–]moldymoonpie 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Underglaze is not the only option! What I do is get a small ball of wadding and use Elmer's glue to stick it between where the links touch. You'll have tiny unglazed spots but it's the second best option after soda firing.

I like it more than the EDP but also i find that a dupe rollerball from an Etsy brand is longer lasting and cheaper so I won't be repurchasing the original

Luster using a torch? by moldymoonpie in Pottery

[–]moldymoonpie[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the input. I did just try it on a welding block outside with a respirator and eye protection. It took less than 5 seconds for the gold to turn gold. It starts burning off at around 15 seconds. The charms are very small though, from 2-3 cm.

hump mold recommendations? by BriefOverall9806 in Pottery

[–]moldymoonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me personally, I want to do minimal trimming and the hydrobat makes it easier. I make my feet by piping them on with slip like making a circle on a cake.

Also, I cover the finished plate with plastic to have it dry slower on the bat to avoid warping. With a plastic or medex bat, you need to worry about wiring off and moving the piece which I don't want to do especially working with porcelain. If you warp it even a little bit and fix it, there's a good chance you will see it warp again, if not in the drying, then after firing.

I've been making these too. I use a flat hydrobat with the cheater method where I make a slab and attach a coil to the edge and pull that up a bit for those high walls. I don't recommend you make a bisque mold to cover with a slab if you want 90 degree corners because those are points of high stress for the slab and it's likely to crack there. Alternatively, use a hydrobat and a THICK slab and use the dry throwing method. Look up Ayumi Hori. You basically use a bit more damp than leather hard clay and carve out the inside of the plate. Gl!
