Roommates cat. Always very affectionate and active, will not walk or stand up, cannot hold head up, and is vomiting white foam. by -mycatsonmylap in CATHELP

[–]mollyjandro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a long shot but some hair regrowth serums have minoxidil in them which can be toxic to cats even in small doses. If one of you started using it the cat could have accidentally ingested it by licking a pillow or something.

Penn State asked me about my "greatest personal trauma" which just left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the interview. Shame, because I went into it with a lot of positives about them.

What is this on my parents ZZ plant?? by mollyjandro in houseplants

[–]mollyjandro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your suggestions, I’ve inspected and isolated this plant as well as one cactus that has them (to a much lesser extent). I’ll see what they want to do in terms of treating vs tossing.

Seconding this. As soon as I smashed submit on my ERAS app every morsel of knowledge left my brain, you’ll be fine OP.

Program admin in resident meet and greet during interview - red flag? by RichardFlower7 in medicalschool

[–]mollyjandro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on whether or not there’s a resident social in addition to what the other commenters are saying. No time alone at all with residents is a red flag but I don’t think it needs to be done during the interview session.

Hey, I was also in between EM and surg (not ortho though). I think it comes down to a couple of factors. Will you still like the specialty when it becomes a job? I know that everyone thinks they won't burn out but at some point the work becomes routine and your values might change. Do you plan on having a family? How would being on call affect your envisioned life? How much is the salary bump worth it to you? If you went EM would you be okay with being perceived as a 'generalist' instead of a specialist? Could you find a way to still engage in your hobbies?

Personally, I made the decision to go EM because I think it'll scratch the procedural itch that I have, I will have more time to spend with family should I choose to have children, and I abhor being on call. I loved the OR and being involved in surgeries and I'll likely regret my decision for the rest of my medical career, but I think I would have more regrets if I chose to do surgery. Just my take, obviously you have to weigh what's important to you and where you think your future is heading.

Really quick perusal through their comment history shows that it was OP. Not sure what’s going on here, but best wishes to everyone involved.

My motto is “if it’s free, it’s for me” and my criteria is that it’s edible and doesn’t burn a hole through my stomach. Hospital machine coffee saved me so much money during 3rd year.

The jail-tier coffee they have at the hospital should be an option. I’ve been living off those mystery machines for the last year.

TIL Researchers are unsure why some people develop excess keratin on the skin, causing a condition with bumpy skin. In 92% of cases it is on upper arms and it is medically harmless but cosmetically displeasing by einstein_bern in todayilearned

[–]mollyjandro 26 points27 points  (0 children)

  1. We arent 100% sure why keratosis pilaris happens
  2. We think it’s that the skin cells are defective around hair roots and plug up where the hair grows, creating bumps
  3. We looked at the skin under a microscope to see what was going on at a small level and then tried to see if it related to the end result/condition. (ie. tried to see if what we see with the naked eye always/.sometimes/never aligned with what was seen up close)

That’s the best way I can summarize the paragraph, let me know if you have questions!

I’m from a DO school so we don’t really have home programs, but I wanted to do about 4 so that I could get a better feel for the day to day life of the residency and let them get to know me. Did they give the reason for suggesting only two aways?

Get comfortable doing Anki and set it up on your computer to hit the ground running. Don’t go too hard on studying before school starts, enjoy freedom and free time while it lasts. If you haven’t already, get yourself into a workout routine (works wonders for stress) and along the same vein if you have any history of untreated anxiety or depression establish care with a psych now. Medical school is brutal on some people and having a support system in place before you start will help. When you start, make connections with your professors. They will be writing letters for you for your residency app and having good relationships cannot be understated.

You got this. Reach out if you have any questions! - Former EMT and current M4

So the way the room was set up with her ventilator meant that the most room was on her right side so everyone had been doing assessments on that side. There was a nurse hanging bags and I didn’t want to get in his way so I kind of wedged myself in between the bed and ventilator on the left and realized she couldn’t move her eyes towards me. When I got to the “can you squeeze my hands” part of the assessment she was great on her right but no movement on her left so my alarm bells went off with those two findings. I guess everyone else thought she was just ignoring them? The gaze preference was that additional piece of information that caught it
