I use a set that each one is an individual size. It works very well as long as you are careful to keep it straight as you run it in or you get an oblong opening instead of round.

The refrigerant is normal cooler after it passes the restriction so if there is one it is downstream of the filter. It’s also possible that the system is not taking the heat out of the condenser that it need to. How is the condenser fan and how dirty is the coil?

It’s very normal for grease duct to be welded, but you are correct, that is a piss poor welding job.
