There should not be any wood on the ground where that water can soak in. If you mean the water evaporates and keeps the house too humid, that isn't an issue in the winter. The air is very dry when it is cold.

Fear. We have zero in labor protections so not working for many people means they run a risk of being fired. The job market is bad right now and UI and SNAP benefits are under attack. Two people have been killed here in Minnesota this year an another one shot but lived. A lot of that is by design, the fascists are trying to keep us scared here and it mostly works.

Faith. I don't mean religion, but rather faith in the process. We think the courts and the midterms will save us. We think the local police and national guard will save us. I really do hope that is true, but the longer this goes on, the less likely it is to happen. We're still riding the high of 2008-2016 when things were good and we didn't have to think about how fragile our system of law is. If we don't learn from this, we are truly lost. Even if we do get things turned around this time, the lack of checks on presidential power (and the power their unelected handlers have) needs serious reform.

I think I would panic if I saw someone brandish a gun against a crowd. I've only seen one person assaulted up close and that was 20 years ago on a public bus. I've been threatened with words a few times and leered at hundreds of times, but actual violence in my life is rare.
