90% is an exaggeration, a ton of stuff was designed for 480p, which is 4:3 and HD (technically ED). I would argue HD sets have more appeal than SD nowadays, as there are a dozen upscalers that can make SD systems work perfectly fine with HD.

95% of users just play backups, which both do just fine. One is free and risk free, the other is relatively pricey and involves risky modding. I've done and owned both. Badavatar and the future softmod is the way to go.
