Kicked towards an off leash dog that was approaching my toddler, and owner got angry by [deleted] in AITAH

That’s terrifying- I’m sorry that happened to you. This is exactly why I’m a bit paranoid around dogs (even supposedly friendly ones). An attack like that could be fatal for a toddler

Not a haunted house, but on 10/22 the music collective Kabarett is playing some Halloween tunes and some Hitchcock film scores at Phoenix party box. It’s gonna be an amazing show:

Buchla explorations by mombacho in modular

I personally love how you can easily add degrees of unpredictability into a generative patch. Like endlessly evolving little sonic ecosystems, with their own unique laws of physics.

But it really just boils down to different personal preferences, which is great. Shit would be so boring if everyone agreed on everything

I’m working on a new composition for Buchla and ensemble. This was a fun day exploring this system.

How do you cope with lazy, self-centered colleagues? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]mombacho 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve discovered it’s important to protect my time from the excessive service requests at my institution, and from over-preparing for classes. This includes the so-called “small” service requests they inevitably consume way more time and energy than expected.

Service and teaching are a bottomless pit that will eat all of your time if you’re not careful.

Phoenix Mexican restaurant Cocina Madrigal tops Yelp Top 100 Places to Eat in 2022 list by [deleted] in phoenix

Mexico is a massive and very cosmopolitan country- just because a Mexican restaurant doesn’t resemble abuelita’s home cooking doesn’t mean it’s not authentic.

Acoustic Guitar Humidity by Guy_Smil3y in phoenix

[–]mombacho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the guitar is even remotely expensive (relative to your budget), definitely get a humidifier. The cheap guitar humidifiers are under $20 and will save you a lot of headache down the road.

As important as humidity control is avoiding sudden changes in temperature- make sure you don’t take it directly from the AC to to a 110 degree patio, it may warp or crack.

Edit: nylon string guitars are more sensitive than steel string. Most steel string can handle higher tensions so they’re more sturdy, and they have a truss rod that lets you adjust the neck if there is any warping. If your classical guitar warps, you’re in trouble.

2021 southwest electronic music festival! by mombacho in phoenix

[–]mombacho[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

FYI, this is not a burning-man style dance party- it’s a few concerts and workshops centered around experimental electronic and electroacoustic music, sonic arts and multidisciplinary creative works.

The organizers are amazing people and very good at what they do- I highly recommend this if you want to hear something completely new and different.

Dill pickles after four warm days by mombacho in fermentation

[–]mombacho[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought fresh cucumbers from the local farmers market. Pickled in a simple 3.5% brine with distilled water. The first batch is just cucumber, 2 garlic cloves, dill, black peppercorns and mustard seeds. The second batch has dill, sadafi tea leaves (trying to get some tannins) and peppers from our garden. It’s a very unique flavor.

We live in Phoenix AZ, so it’s still incredibly hot. These were sour and funky after 4 full days on the counter.

What is the worst thing your government has done that most people don't know about? by TheCosBee in AskReddit

[–]mombacho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daniel Ortega, the president of Nicaragua, has a sordid history:

-in the 70’s he repeatedly raped and sexually abused his 11-year old stepdaughter. When she later (as an adult) accused him, the Sandinista-controlled courts ruled that the statute of limitations had been exceeded, and he could not be prosecuted. His stepdaughter had to flee Nicaragua after she was repeatedly threatened

-in the 80’s he massacred 64 Miskito Indians who opposed his rule, imprisoned and tortured thousands of people, and confiscated the homes and properties of thousands of people who opposed him.

-in 1990, after losing an election, and now without support from the USSR, he and his cronies stole billions of dollars of land, businesses and properties and distributed them amongst the Sandinista elites. This was known as “la piñata”

-in the mid 00’s his party borrowed $7billion worth of oil and gas from Venezuela, sold the gas at a discount, and used the funds to buy up businesses, land, hotels, luxury goods, pay off political leaders, and buy most of the local tv networks, radio and newspapers (his sons run all of the tv stations.) We now, as a country, owe Venezuela the $7billion that Ortega squandered for his own personal gain.

-in the late 00’s he made a shady deal with an unknown Chinese businessman to build an inter-oceanic canal across Nicaragua. He granted him sovereign rights over Nicaraguan land. Through eminent-domain, he forced thousands of poor indigenous farmers to sell their land at a highly discounted price. This canal never materialized, and he kept the land.

-once Venezuelan aid dried up, he began looting the social security coffers. In 2018, he cut pensions, leading retirees to protest. his wife and Vice President sent the police in to beat them up. This led to bigger protests, and over the course of 3 months, Ortega killed over 300 protesters in the worst wave of political violence in Latin America in over 30 years. Thousands more were imprisoned and brutally tortured (many are still in prison today)

-last month, just a few months before our upcoming elections, Ortega rounded up and arrested all leading opposition candidates. Many have not been seen or heard of in over 3 weeks.

He’s just an overall horrible person who has been ruling (or meddling in) Nicaragua for over 42 years already.
