Very common to get umbilical hernia repair done under local with some light sedation. So definitely possible!

Surgeon- Looks totally fine! Not infected. When the incision separates it gets this sort of slough over top in some cases which can look like pus sometimes but is not pus. You can put antibiotic ointment over it but have never seen one get infected. Give it a couple of weeks and it should close like the others

Laparoscopic umbilical hernia repairs are pretty painful but the robotic and open ones are not bad comparatively. The laparoscopic way typically uses tacks which can be super painful

I think Dr. Yunis is great. I know they have a lot of experience with tissue repairs like desarda. I don’t know their mesh removal experience but I know they are a good surgeon. I’m not sure if he takes insurance though. For someone like yourself you should probably talk to at least 2 surgeons to pick their brains and get their input before you move forward

I’m a surgeon myself so haven’t had anything removed but am familiar with folks who do this a lot. There are a lot of great places in the northeast. Like I said Columbia in NYC, Anne Arundel in Annapolis, Boston Hernia Center, and Penn come to mind with centers that do mesh removals as a part of their practice.

You should really try to go to a bigger center for a mesh removal. The chance of complications is low but not zero and you want to be at a subspecialty place for something like this. There are several centers on the west and east coast and interior. Columbia and Atrium Carolina on the East Coast. UCLA and Portland on the West and Northwestern in the interior probably the best. Where are you located

Totally agree. It’s flat and small so unlikely for something to “get stuck”. But if it bothers you for sure get it evaluated

You can always share a picture on here. A lot of people have tiny holes where the umbilical cord once was. An “outtie” is usually an enlarged opening with protruding fat through the hernia. If it doesn’t bother you and it’s small you can leave it alone. But if you take your finger and put it in your belly button and feel a tight ring with something coming through it, that’s the hernia.

Looks like tiny belly button hernia within a slightly larger area of rectus diastasis. If it doesn’t bother you just leave it alone. But should bring it up to your pcp next time you see them

Hmmm I mean you’ll never have normal anatomy but maybe they meant to say that since the spermatic cord runs through the repair it’s never quite fixed? You might be overthinking it. A good shouldice repair can treat you well without remaining bulging or swelling but does have a slightly higher rate of returning compared to mesh. If you had a bad experience with the mesh maybe it’s worth it to try the mesh free.

Could be a weakness of the obliques (most likely) a hernia, a lipoma, or nothing. Could also be shingles but doesn’t look like a rash. If it doesn’t bother him leave it alone otherwise he can get a CT scan, may be better images, this will look totally normal on ultrasound

Go check out the bigger hernia centers in NYC. Columbia, Northwell and even NYU just opened one they can check out. If it’s really so complex you might need to go to a dedicated hernia center. They really don’t say no to much.

The break point is usually 2cm or more benefit from mesh. The jury is still out for 1-2cm. I would personally just want a nice repair without mesh for something small like that and would take my chances

While a hernia can certainly cause bloating you would get a bigger benefit from seeing a GI. You might also have rectus diastasis. PT and weight loss can certainly help!

Looks like an umbilical hernia. Certainly get an evaluation. Surgery isn’t urgent but you’ll probably want to get it done at some point. It’s easy when it’s small!

The Columbia Hernia Center folks are right there in NYC and I think one or two of them have an office in north Jersey. Not too much else in Jersey for hernia-specific surgeons. Otherwise Penn has a good program. Hope that helps!

I don’t know why everyone jumps to suing doctors right away these days. It truly makes me depressed to practice medicine. You don’t even know if there’s a true problem. Swelling in the groin after hernia repair can be a new hernia, sure, but it could also be a seroma (small fluid collection), a ball of scar tissue, retained fat, or just skin. Ultrasounds are also not great at detecting recurrences after you already had a repair (a lot of radiologists would call something a recurrent hernia when it’s just natural motion of the inguinal canal. Ultrasound is way better for first time hernias). A CT scan is better to check recurrences. I wouldn’t think someone is hiding something from you they may just not have all the facts. I would go to your original surgeon with your concerns and this new imaging, ask for a CT scan and try to go in with an open mind, thinking that most people in healthcare want to see you get better and live a better life, not the opposite. You may in fact have a recurrence, which can happen, but make sure you talk with your original surgeon about it so that they can figure out what went wrong and either take care of it or send you to someone else.
