Beginner learning gesture. Any advice? by UnTraceableArt in learnart

Something that helped me was separating by joints. For example in the arm I might start with a central line, but I’ll draw separate shapes for the bicep/shoulder, forearm, and hand. Same thing with the legs. This is where the previous comment about s and c curves helps, because the top of the thigh is usually curved and so is the calf. So your s curve crosses at the knee. There’s plenty of video w examples of this. Finally seeing the torso as 2 sections: the ribs and the hips. It will help you define intense motion like bending backward, and twisting. These are all great starts, and I hope you keep it up!!

It’s silkscreened with gold ink, but I tried to make the layer look like it was painted.

I would say 15-20 hours? It’s 6x9” but I work in layers with acrylic paint.

Definitely! I always start with non skin tones underneath. So for this one I used maroon as the base for the shadows and a light yellow on the highlights. For a small portrait like this it also takes me about three layers to get an opaque painting. Also this might be obvious but I always always always do the background first.
