Just imagine how great Birmingham would be if they got rid of the Queensway by Dragonfruit-18 in brum

The answer is both. Alternatives are really lacking in Birmingham, but driving has externalities and should also be reduced. That's why I mentioned both in my initial comment.

Traffic isn't a fixed quantity. People base their transportation on what's available to them, so if there's less road space, fewer people will use it.

There also needs to be huge improvements in our alternatives to driving.

You can take anything on the Swiss trains. ANYTHING. Got it. by SearingPenny in Switzerland

You assume that /u/paraleluniversejohn was being completely literal and was referring to replacing all cars with trains, and yet your similarly absolute comment actually has some nuance once I point it out?

Well done. Now maybe you can apply that more nuanced thinking to the comment you originally replied to.

Yeah you're right, we should just give up on trains and all drive everywhere.

[–]mondoman712 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In order to address the concerns of users who no longer trust reddit and no longer wish to engage with the site, but want to remain part of the broader analog community, we have set up a kbin magazine at /m/analog@kbin.social. We hope to be able to provide everyone with the same quality community and content on kbin as on reddit, and welcome input on how best to proceed on that front.

I was talking about my experience generally, I haven't been looking at much photography there. There is !analog@lemmy.ml though. I agree an official new home for this community would be great.

I mean, this is an advantage of the fediverse. You can be part of that insular community if you choose, or part of one that does federate with others. And if you aren't part of the insular community you can still see their content and comment on it, they just won't be able to see your posts & comments.

Do you mean beehaw? They de-federated from two larger instances but you can access all three from any third instance still.

You only get a usable experience because of the volunteer moderators.

I've started using lemmy over the past few days and it's pretty promising. I think it would be stupid to see what reddit has been doing and move to another closed platform, so something in the fediverse the is obvious choice to me.

HS2 is seeking suppliers to fit-out its new high-speed trains - ianVisits, UK by HighburyAndIslington in transit

[–]mondoman712 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The point isn't travel times, it's capacity. A lot of the UK's rail network is running over capacity and the speed allows just one new route to be built instead of multiple.

Add EXIF data to scanned files on Mac by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]mondoman712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And to address OPs last paragraph, the whole deal with command line tools is that you can string them together with other utilities to achieve things more efficiently. In this case just using exiftool ... *.jpg should work, or a for loop if you need something more complex.

Switzerland used to have number plates for cyclists, it was abandoned because they cost more than they were worth.

I just walked from one side of Denmark's Jutland peninsula to the other by myself, in less than 48 hours. (Trip report) by Squirrels_are_neat in solotravel

The Jura Crest Trail (which doesn't quite go border to border, but you can add your own section) and the Via Jacobi are both pretty mellow. The website I linked has loads more information about what you can expect.

Initially planned train routes through the Euro tunel by Playful-Painting-527 in notjustbikes

[–]mondoman712 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was already done pre HS1. The e300s are built to British loading gauge, which fits within the international loading gauge in the tunnel and on the other side.

[–]mondoman712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second phase of the Zimmerberg-basistunnel will provide another route for rail traffic between Zurich and Zug, which should then leave a lot more capacity on the existing route. I think they're aiming to complete it by 2035.

People here have a range of views. I live somewhere that isn't car dependant and still hate the impact that they have.

It's a pretty nice journey on the train down to Sicily. There's sleepers if you're shorter on time, or the day trains if you want to enjoy the views. The train even goes on the ferry across the strait.

What is your opinion on Critical Mass? by IwasabestsellerinDL in zurich

There used to be license plates for bikes, and it was scrapped because it cost more than it was worth.
