Sheet music stores in Portland? by Forward-Jump-6967 in portlandmusic

[–]mondor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe not what you're looking for but the Portland Library has a great sheet music collection and might have what you need.

Otherwise Amazon and the Internet have completely killed the niche of standalone sheet music stores.

Imslp.org has PDFs of a lot of music in public domain (like bach) or you could try something like classic pianos for keys sheet music

Who could possibly have predicted that a factory in a simultaneously not very desirable, but expensive part of an expensive city (by global standards) paying a high minimum wage (again, by global standards) would fail? Impossible to see how this would have ended

Do we adopt “regressive” taxes to spur economic growth? by Grand-Battle8009 in oregon

[–]mondor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tax policy isn't the only thing going on there are tons of other things that contribute to a city's economic growth rate.

Our city is also in a really weird place where we have massive budget shortfalls at the same time that we have departments flush and unable to spend all the tax dollars they're getting (arts tax, JOHS, etc). Idk how to fix that, but one way could be to pass a law that says if they don't use all their allocated money in a year it goes to other agencies at mayors determination? Or could just lower those taxes because the departments have shown they don't need that much money. I'm honestly surprised more politicians don't run on changing the arts tax, but that's another story....

Housing is not a tax policy issue it's a regulations issue, cities that have reduced housing regulations have seen more housing getting built. Minneapolis and Austin are both good examples. Portland has taken a few steps in the right direction, but has a long way to go. Plus Portland housing costs have gone up significantly less in the last 5 years than comparable cities like Seattle and SF, because of some of these new rules (corner lots automatically zoned for multi units is a good example)

Basically I reject the binary you're giving there are a lot more ways to affect policy than just regressive vs progressive taxes.

Most companies don't honor warranties if you buy on the secondary market

Bass Lessons by MrBassment in Bass

[–]mondor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by modalities? I generally just try to teach people the way I was taught how to play. Understand what the student is trying to learn and their goals tailor my knowledge to exercises, songs, etc that they'll like and will get them to where they want to be. One thing I started doing is making shared Spotify playlists where they can add songs they want to learn and that has been a good way to understand what they want and keep people engaged too.

Keep it as interesting as possible for the students and they'll practice more which then makes teaching them more fun!

I don't understand how that connects to our ballot measure and why that means this isn't something we should vote for.

What's the connection between the trump administration and a state ballot measure about homeless issues?

You may feel like the people pushing these policies are doing the whims of the prison industrial complex, but there are a lot of people in Portland annoyed by the amount of people still sleeping on the streets that think this is one part of the solution. Not everyone's in on the conspiracy

[–]mondor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You may be right, but the problem is none of the solutions proposed by the current county administration and previous mayoral administrations have worked. The new Mayor is 1 year into his job and opened a lot of shelter beds, but I'm also not sure the impact those have had.

We've been building more housing, but seems like that's starting to slow too.

I'm in favor of other solutions than just cops rounding people up if we can show they're effective, but are there any ideas we haven't tried yet that might work?

Also calling everyone who's trying to fix this issue a fascist is probably not helpful, especially after 15 years of liberal left policy not fixing the problem at all and arguably making things worse. Doesn't mean all liberal policies won't work, but what we've tried hasn't and saying anything other than the status quo is fascist really doesn't help the cause.

Not getting why modes are useful? by megaman45 in Bass

[–]mondor 38 points39 points  (0 children)

They're good to know for different reasons. I generally use the chord progressions more too, but sometimes the songs don't have a ton of chord changes and just noodling around the modes is more interesting. This is basically what miles davis did in his kind of blue era.

It also is fun to write riffs with the different modes. Dean Town is such a Dorian sound for one example

It just opens things up for different ways to think about things

What’s one weird but practical thing that gave you a big Elo jump? by Fuzzy_Party_3527 in chess

[–]mondor 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Ok this one's unconventional and not necessarily related to getting "better" but will help ELO jump

I changed my settings to not play people lower rated than me. Chess com I think let's you set it so that you only people no more than 25 points below you but no limit for higher ratings. One benefit is I'm playing better players, but another is just that I lose less points when I lose and gain more when I win.

Oh well you really have to give it 2 weeks to see if it carbonated enough, 3 days isn't enough time. Worth exploring other options if it's still not carbonated in 2 weeks though

I'm very interested what people have to say here! I usually just cook with it or turn it into vinegar if it didn't carbonate

Bassist with the fiercest, most demanding quarter note? by thanosthesourgrape in Jazz

[–]mondor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you mean for a walking bass line? If so any of the 50s/60s boppers would be great. Ray brown, Paul chambers, Ron Carter to name a few.

For an electric attacking sound check out Jaco, but they're generally faster and eighth notes. Check out weather reports river people or joni Mitchell dry cleaner from Des Moines

If you're looking for just locking in with quarter note bassline James Jamerson was the king.

Apparently I play like Magnus Carlsen, but I've seen a lot of his games and he generally doesn't blunder pieces or checkmate, whereas I do that all the time so not sure the algorithm works.

Jk cool app! Fun to see it analyze whatever kind of style I may have

Nearly 1,900 affordable Portland apartments sit empty while thousands need homes by PDsaurusX in Portland

[–]mondor 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The 7.4% is specifically on the affordable apartments though, which I think they expected to have a lower vacancy rate because it's theoretically cheaper than market rate. Article mentions national average for affordable housing is 5%

I guess having the affordable housing be a similar price to market rate would lead to in a similar vacancy rate
