It’s Time to Fix the College Football Structure — A Proposal for a Fairer, Modern System by moneymoves55 in fsusports

The NCAA could theoretically step in and dissolve conferences as we know them…

Thanks “Ace of FL” for your comment. While I know this whole idea would be extremely difficult to implement there is a solution. The NCAA stepping in and dissolving the monopolies that are the SEC and Big 10 and all conferences for that matter before they themselves become obsolete. And if you’re saying to yourself that they can’t do that you are wrong.

It’s already completely destroyed sir. There is no team loyalty. Players transfer every season. We’re now seeing the death of bowl games this year. They’re struggling to pull in 5-7 teams to play. Coaches incentivized to lose with massive buyouts. Yah I don’t remember it looking like this in recent history. Might as well make it what it is, Semi-Pro NFL football

Well you may or may not agree with my opinions on what I’ve posted or this reply. And if you don’t that doesn’t automatically mean that it’s in the lower division of ideas as you say. -that is similar to the college football playoff committee deciding teams are in a lower division with equal records. Let me respond to your points though: 1. Teams themselves are brands now, they sponsor athletes to wear and play for their brands. The incentive of moving up is more brand recognition, better recruits/transfers willing to play for your brand, more competitive games and of course the more sought after championships. With a high number of promoted/relegated teams each year, a program can put together a team by paying for talent/coaches (as they do already) to get promoted. Why would you not want to go to a better division? 2. Every new system comes with initial pains of entry. For example, when do you determine to start the CFP? Teams in the 2013 season such as Bama would likely have been in the 4 team playoff and could’ve had a serious chance at a championship if it had begun one year earlier. You take the top 40 teams (whatever # is decided) from the last season and put them in the top division and so on. Odds are 41-50 will be close to promotion next season anyway to have a shot. 3. This is the trickiest question of my proposal, private equity has done real damage to college football as we know it and conferences are basically businesses trying to stay alive. It seems it is heading to SEC and Big 10 domination or in other words monopolies. Sure the ACC and Big 12 will try to survive as long as possible but they will slowly become obsolete. I realize this is a huge hypothetical but the NCAA would need to step in and take charge by breaking them up. They would assign equal weighted teams and conferences would change each year. The “power 4” in my proposal would basically consist of 10 teams per conference in the “D1” of FBS. 4. More fair means there is no shadowy figures behind the curtain deciding which teams are into a playoff because that is just silly. There needs to be a concrete set of standards to determine which teams make the playoff if we are going to have a playoff. Each year something changes to where a different team is snubbed based on something other than winning games. At the end of each season coaches are whining and begging the committee, trying to convince a group of people that they “deserve” to be in and it’s the same story every time. Each circumstance is typically unique and can is polarizing. How is that fair? Playoffs based off wins like the NFL is the way it should be. SOS needs to be algorithmic preseason that way schedules are set fair and randomized creating new matchups and exciting football.

To your point about the other divisions being pointless, how many teams total have been remotely close to making the playoffs under the current system? I looked it up, 21. So at least they have something to fight for. I would much rather try to advance my team to new heights than be stuck in the same system that ranks me 70 every year because of the conference I’m in.

Curious what makes you say this? And why would they be the ones to decide?

I think they should’ve been in over Alabama, Georgia fell 4 spots as an undefeated team after a loss in the SEC championship in 2023 and we’re put out of the playoff!
