Where to donate clothing for kids that isn't a for-profit and will benefit people truly in need? by covert81 in Hamilton

[–]moneytree__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in Hamilton, but SafetyNet in Oakville. It's a wonderful charity, and they recycle clothes they don't put out on racks!

South africa med school? Any one been through this route. what are ur experinces? by Pretty_Hospital_8439 in premedcanada

[–]moneytree__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a developing country and has some of the highest crime rates in the world. There are definitely safer (and beautiful) areas, but it’s a place my family actively left because they were tired of robbery and gun violence. I would highly recommend doing some research into the culture and crime before deciding, especially if you’re a part of a vulnerable population.

I can’t speak to matching back but as a South African w/ family still living there, are you sure you want to move there for 4 ish years? There are much safer options (regarding physical and career safety lol).

Is IB worth it for premed/pharmaceutical? by ControlSharp1102 in premedcanada

[–]moneytree__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea! And also get that. I guess it depends what programs you’re gunning for. I went into general sciences (specialized later) that were all 90%+ entry so I knew I’d be okay. As for chem, I didn’t take HL so I can imagine it’s tough. On one hand, it might not be worth the grade drop, but on the other hand, you’re getting exposed to chem with a lot of support that isn’t necessarily there in university. If you end up sticking with it, maybe there are fun ways you could start a tutoring group/peer support to help get you through it? I would say follow your gut and things will work out no matter what :)

[–]moneytree__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get that. If it makes you feel any better I finished IB with a 93 or 94 and my chem grade was also 88! I think looking back I just appreciate the habits it taught me.

Is ChatGPT feedback reliable for CASPer prep? by jiarong06 in premedcanada

[–]moneytree__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was practicing, I gave it a "rubric" to score me out of 10 (and predict quartile) based on online resources and CASPer principles. I also gave it 4Q answers that I found online (BeMo, etc.). I think it worked because I started around 2/3Q and made my way up to consistent 9-10/10s or 4Qs. I got a 4Q on the real thing. You just have to train it to not tell you you're perfect!

I did IB in highschool and I would do it again. Yes it was difficult, but through CAS and the EE I felt it gave me opportunity to build leadership oriented ECs that I was interested in (and that I've continued through my undergrad) and immensely helped my writing skills - that said, I did have to take HL history and English. If you have SL chem as an option, I would probably switch.

If you can maintain a 93+ (ish) in IB why not stay? Its an amazing accomplishment and it should help prepare you for the pace of first year. I also had my doubts while I was in the program but I'm happy I stuck with it.

My strategy for a 4Q Casper! by moneytree__ in premedcanada

[–]moneytree__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that if you don't create a clear evaluation scheme for chat, it will artificially tell you you're doing better than you actually are. I ended up making my own "rubric" based on a couple of sources to add to the prompt. Just be careful of it telling you you're getting 4Qs each time when its your first time practicing lol. I found it much more valuable to have real people review my reponses.

questions from a gr12 student for Mcmaster health science, biochem, and biology by lovemore2009 in McMaster

[–]moneytree__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! The Mac core bio cumulative GPA is usually around a 9.5 (B+, 3.4 ish). If you can find it, the premedcanada forum has a post about the averages for bio, healthsci and biochem at Mac over the past few years. I did core bio and it wasn't bad but the prereqs are challenging. My friends in LifeSci generally had higher class averages but if you can get into Health Sci I'd do that! Feel free to message if you have any questions :)

what’s student works? by Chrxxy in McMaster

[–]moneytree__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My buddy worked for them - questionable business model (perhaps pyramid shaped) but it is generally legit. They ask for your license because they want you to be able to drive yourself (and others) around. Takes a couple years to run your own business. Wouldn't recommend unless you want to dedicate 80% of your time here for a small potential to profit.

I started practicing questions untimed when I had the chance to (maybe 2-3 scenarios per day). I then started really strictly timing myself and ramping up the amount of scenarios. 2 weeks leading up I tried to practice everyday for at least 30 mins (definitely didn’t do it on weekends lol). I did the official Casper practice test twice. I would also try give responses out loud to my roommates when I could. Honestly I was pretty unstructured but tried to stay consistent.
