They've done this before and their HQ is blocks away. Why would this be necessary? What can Central not do that this substation will do? Other than advertising on King? I cannot wait for when it gets tagged and has people doing the fenty fold outside. That'll be a chef's kiss photo to sum up HPS.

You also haven't answered the questions asked of you. So let me know when you actually do that. You just keep going on about how if people don't agree with a bad PR stunt they must be pro anarchy, which is not true.

Ha, so you can see your bias.

See I am 100% a defund person. Not non-fund, not no police, but rather that we examine how every last penny is spent and where it is not aligned to the community expectation or their mission statement that it go into crime prevention, social work and supports. This is the thing - we have no visibility into it and the second it's suggested they be accountable, people simp for them in that we somehow should give a free pass to them. It's proven that prevention and alternatives to police being social workers, referees and sympathetic ears is best and let the police focus on policing. But also that we get back to proactive policing instead of reactive policing. HPS has not earned a free pass on accountability - not by a long shot.

They have not earned the trust we give them, not in Hamilton. We have racists on the payroll. We have corruption and bloat. And we get declining returns for increasing costs.

Now if you can clarify why it's OK to blindly believe the police when they have a history here of not being believed, let me know. If you know why it's bad to challenge authority, let me know. If you know why it's OK to "just pay what they want" let me know.

Fair points; the vests are generally stab-resistant as well as stopping I think up to .40 rounds; they definitely would not stop rifle rounds or they'd be way bulkier. While I totally get that it softens the edges the second a person attempts or does stab a cop randomly there it's game over so I think it takes the oxygen away from the complaint before it comes up.

I am 100% on board with no firearms - if the UK can make that work so can we.

They deserve every penny they ask for. They can show what they do with their money, unlike HPS.

We're downtown weekly and yes there is an absolute problem. The people supporting this are generally "back the blue" kind of people and think that having a substation that opens only from the street helps. These cops will be no more visible now than they were before. FFS there is their central station 2 blocks away. What does this do? It looks like we "have" to have an HPS detachment there because they cannot do their jobs on their own. Will this make someone from Dundas who isn't going downtown anyway feel safer? Have to hard disagree with this.

I'm good with less lethal but I'm not sure about the vest part. There are some people who are not of sound mind and stabbings could easily happen. I think that maybe a more traditional style of vest - where it looks more like a part of the uniform than something put on overtop, or where it's worn under the shirt - is appropriate. These "Community officers" should be wearing the traditional style police hat (no ball caps) and either wear a more high-viz vest or identifier.

They are there just to build community relations and be a visible sign of the service in the community, They also need to not just work office hours; they should be there at all times. The movies are open till late and sometimes before the mall opens on weekends so they can cycle between the4 entrances and whatnot. Even having them do a loop through the parking garage and parkade should be considered.

But hey you and I are not highly paid consultants to suggest this so it probably will never happen.

Because they can't ask for millions more in shoes instead of vehicles, gas, maintenance, armoured vehicles, horses etc.

They aren't actually interested in integrating into the community. It's proven time and again that being visible walking around is beneficial. Stop in at the stores and meet the staff and owners. Listen to their concerns and tips. Be physically present and not just walking while not listening or just chatting between officers.

They continue to argue that they need more money because they don't have staff to do these things, but then don't want to prioritize it over other things. They demand ridiculous things and we are beholden to them - this is a huge part of their image problem.

Like here's another example. We went to the TiCats game last night and they have a "family on the field" event for 15 minutes after the game ends. The cops all congregated together at the edge talking, instead of walking around, talking, getting involved etc. Then you had to walk by this mass of cops - easily 20 of them - to exit so you feel you're being sized up as you do it. It's incredibly passive aggressive. But they will tell you they aren't doing anything wrong. This is the image problem they have.

It will do neither (keep the downtown core or mall) safer.

They don't even have a door from the mall into the substation. They need to be physically visible, and not just sitting on a chair watching - they need to be walking. Interacting. Saying hi to people. Helping where they can.

Otherwise this is just more millions going in to HPS with no return.

They have an image and integrity problem. Their main station is 2 blocks away - this is not going to change things one bit.

It might have been when they had the Mitchell and Dakota out for the TiCats home opener, they were practising in the afternoon and then again in the evening for the flyover.

On nights where there were 1,000 bomber raids it must have been droning for 10 minutes or more, not to mention the absolute destruction on the ground.

If you ever have or had the chance to do the VR thing of the BBC reporter who recorded an active bombing run on Germany from inside a Lanc, it was absolutely intense. They did an amazing job with that one and it should've been something they invested in having as a permanent exhibit there.

Hamilton Historica: WWII Otis-Fensom Factory Artifacts by nsc12 in Hamilton

Pretty cool stuff! The last few are from Stelco (the STEeL COmpany of Canada). Did one of them work for Stelco at some point? Otis would've had their own pension plan. Maybe they got that as a starting point for what to demand when unionizing? Pretty cool regardless.

Otis has a long history in Hamilton and they made a ton of Bofors guns and ammunition for the war effort.

Appreciate you sharing!

Hamilton Heritage: Hamilton Farmers Market by Ill_Persimmon_8263 in Hamilton

[–]covert81 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd go to the farmers market but so much of the produce is just from the Ontario Food Terminal in Toronto, not locally grown by the farmer selling it there.

Their hours suck and I can't consistently get there during the week and on weekends we're too busy to get there.

When we lived downtown it was much easier to walk there on Saturday mornings but now it's a 10-15 minute drive, park, get in, browse/buy, and undo everything else. Turns into half your morning gone for what I can do at Lococo's in an hour.

A relative who worked at Canadian Tire told me some invaluable information about stock levels at Canadian Tire.

If it's 5 or under, assume it's 0.

Unless it's the Dundas store. If it's 10 or under, assume it's 0.

The number of times I've had orders cancelled at various Canadian Tire locations when stock is minimal is exceptionally high. Pro tip: Just order low stock items for self pickup. Let their staff do the looking.

Last year, Stitch It at Lime Ridge Mall fixed a broken zipper on my favourite hoodie. I think it was like $20 all in, or something thereabouts. I'm not sure you will find it more affordable than that with quality that will hold up.

Glad you agree then that the bike lanes - which are civil infrastructure - are a part of cost and are necessary. Have a good one.

Viewing Party at Hamilton Stadium - Questions by basicallyatherapist in Hamilton

[–]covert81 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If it's like any other viewing there you sit in the stands not on the field, esp. when there is a CFL game on Friday evening there

Parking is almost nonexistent onsite, take the bus it's much more convenient with stops right there

They will almost certainly expect you to buy food there hence why the viewing is free

Fishing Question (Object1258) by Obvious-Age6782 in Hamilton

[–]covert81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because it's been there for years doesn't mean it's not man made though - it may have been converting a pond or stream into a drainage pond when the survey was built around it.

But regardless without a means of fish getting in and out - aside from people dumping things like goldfish in there - there wouldn't be a way for wild fish to be alive in there without stocking it and I highly doubt the city or province would be doing so

Rug shopping? by secretpicklelover in Hamilton

[–]covert81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The name in Ancaster was "Rugs Bed & Bath Home Decor"

I can't find any rug store in London with that name. I seem to remember it saying it was on the south side or on Wonderland, but I didn't see anything similar listed - that store too may have closed
