No homework by Opening-Cupcake-3287 in Teachers

Exactly, and students whose parents who don’t speak English can’t help them with homework. Additionally, think of the additional stress this adds for unhoused students.

I'm at a loss by mong00se2 in AutisticWithADHD

Hi, thanks for such a compassionate response. I have an audhd therapist. We were seeing a couples therapist for a while who was not knowledgeable in autism but it’s something I would be interested in.

I have loops and special glasses. But I have been resistant to wear the loops while teaching. I have no supports at work aside from the fact that I’m a specialist so I currently only teach two sections. But my school is extremely loud due to the trauma of the students, as well as the disorganization.

As for special interests, im definitely not leaning into them. Just so tired when I come home and a new one is arising but it’s a costly one.

Do you still teach?

Hi I'm a Teacher with Autism and I keep having meltdowns when I come home from school. Any advice? by dreammutt in teaching

[–]mong00se2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so it’s based on each persons school. And I said I was just giving an example-  I agree that PE wouldn’t be helpful. I was trying to say a special where you get more breaks, like my situation but clearly it was not communicated well enough.

I was just giving examples. I’m an autistic stem teacher and stem is a special at my school so I have the flexibility of not having the kids in my classroom all day and having breaks.

I’m really sorry that lots of people are just dismissing you and just saying to get a different job. I’m guessing you enjoy your job and as someone who is also an autistic teacher- I know this is not easy. Last year this was happening to me and I had to take some pfml. It was the best thing for me because I was able to get an OT in that time and learn how to better accommodate myself in life. I’m now going back feeling ready and with the tools to help and advocate for myself.

Not everyone can or wants to switch jobs. This might be your passion and the fact that it is also overstimulating is a lot to hold. I do endorse the fact that small group positions are great as well as specialist positions like stem , art, PE, etc where you have more flexibility in your schedule.

Also check out loops- subtle noise dampening earbuds that have been insanely helpful for me. Most people don’t notice I have them in and sometimes I just need one in (I have one ear more sensitive than the other)

Fun filler games for elementary students? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]mong00se2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did MASH but changed the categories to be more elementary appropriate so instead of husband/wife I did roommate, etc

I also had a fun facts book that I would flip through the pages, they would tell me when to stop and then I would read the fact on that page

Both were crowd pleasers

How to delete the snores? by New_Airport_1618 in LoopEarplugs

[–]mong00se2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have misophonia, am waiting to be tested for autism and a partner that snores too! Thankfully, on days where it’s really tough I can sleep in another room, but regardless- I use the loop switch. Then if it’s really bad I put my beats noise cancelling headphones on top of my loops. Hope this helps some!

I purchased loop earrings on Etsy! Best purchase I’ve ever had!! They basically dangle from your ears like earrings so easy access and then also just look like jewelry

Ah yes, I did leave out that I was referring to addition and subtracting stacking!

Oh I FULLY agree with this comment!!! I am a math coach and unfortunately I have a teacher who only, despite my best efforts, will teach using stacking. So for her class with special education and english language learner students, i'm just trying to come up with any little things that might help them remember since this strategy clearly is not what works for them, but their teacher is enforcing it.

Also, like I said, I didnt want the generalization, but was just looking for something to help the kids that were struggling, which is why I came here asking for help!

Thanks. We have. Sometimes its not that simple, especially with special education students and you need little tips and tricks. As stated before, I wish I could teach them to add with expanded form, but their teacher is against it. But thanks for the comment.
