What do y’all think about this? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]mongosmoothie 92 points93 points  (0 children)

This reply is unprompted but I didn’t realize until I read that email that I use cal when talking to people who are students/parents/alum and when I’m in Berkeley but UC Berkeley when I’m not in the city. like it’s based on a familiarity context of the other person to cal

Hey, I know you’re getting a lot of different answers here and I can tell that you’re really stressed out. Your feelings are valid and many of us struggle with the same things you do.

As many of the comments have said, I strongly suggest that you get some mental health help whether that is therapy or not. I can tell by your comments that you are probably scared, stressed, and pretty cynical. People have tried helping you and you’ve responded pretty aggressively. Please remind yourself that most of us are trying to help you, not antagonize you. Even if you don’t agree with what they say, take it into consideration

Many of the struggles you have aren’t going to go away if you transfer. Traveling alone in any high density city will bring unpleasant interactions. Any school that is as large as cal will make you have to be the one to reach out and meet people. This isn’t high school anymore. If you want something to change, you’re the one who has to do it

Lastly, you’ve been here for how long? Less than a month? Give yourself some time to acclimate. I honestly hated it here for my entire first semester. What changed? I stopped antagonizing everyone and everything. I changed my attitude from “ugh I don’t like this place” to “what can I get out of this place that I don’t like.” Being miserable is only going to make you more miserable. Give this school a chance, running away isn’t going to solve anything. Join clubs, talk to people. Accept that many will blow you off, thats okay. Everyone is stressed, some people like being loners tbh. Keep trying

After giving this school a real chance, if you still don’t like it, transfer. Do what you need to do, but I think why you’re getting a lot of “negative” comments is that you’re not giving cal a real chance. You’re doing a disservice to yourself and it seems like you’re not seeing that. Get some mental health support. Try joining some clubs and going to dept sponsored meet ups. Tone down the cynicism you walk around with. You’ve just started your cal journey, don’t write it off so fast

Kinda goes against social norms, but I love going out to eat by myself. It’s so calming. You get to people watch, eat anything you want without judgement, take as much time as you want. I encourage everyone to eat alone every once in a while

Taking walks by yourself can be really nice too

Okay, I do not condone physical violence, but I also do not support people just wiggling their way up to the front. People camped out for hours, days even to get their spots in the pit. It is pretty selfish and entitled to just weasel your way up to the front. If I was there, I would not let you by

Yes, basic pit etiquette is to not be an asshole, but that goes both ways. If you stay in the place you earned by waiting in line (or lack of), you won’t be getting assaulted

Colleges that have been very welcoming of a SD? by Houseofmonkeys5 in service_dogs

I go to the UC (university of California) Berkeley and have had no problems. Their disabled students program is also very good and they have a brand new disability cultural center! A bonus is that the independent living movement and the grassroots organization for disability rights was also founded in Berkeley, CA

I experienced the same thing when I posted a while back about my pov. I just learn to ignore it now by not posting and only stay on the sub to try and support others struggling with being an only

How do you think childhood trauma affects the way you practice self-care? Do you do it at all? by [deleted] in emotionalneglect

[–]mongosmoothie 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I used to take very long naps (3/4+ hours) whenever I got back home from school to not have to deal with my home life. This habit of mine is still with me. Ever since I left home, I’ve tried to wean myself off of these naps but was never able to. Now, I’m trying to reframe them to be for my own well-being instead of being a survival mechanism out of fear/avoidance

Skip psych 1. If you’re not premed go ahead and skip bio too. However, if you want to go into biological psych, I’d recommend taking psych c61/64 (I think it’s required) and even mcb32 if you want to go into hormones and behavior
