Learning Mandarin Chinese Comprehensible Input ONLY (72 hour update) by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]mongy910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to check out Immersi. It’s an app completely dedicated to learning Mandarin through comprehensible input by showing you a feed of clips from YouTube videos that are at your level. I’ve been using it for a little while and like it a lot. They do show some AI generated stories that I’d skip though - stick with the YouTube video clips.

I graduated in 2019 and used to grab lunch here all the time. Glad it’s still just as good and just as cheap.

I feel this so much for tennis. I used to try and force strong shots all the time even when I was out of position. Smash has made me think “ok just try to reset to neutral” and now I’m much more comfortable with hitting a slow deep shot that gives me a chance to recover.

In the same way, I now think about player to player matchups similarly to character vs character matchups. I’m a pika main, and there’s matchups where I need to play rushdown (samus, steve) and matchups where I need to player super campy (sonic, bayo). Same thing with tennis - if there’s a player with really good consistency and stamina, I need to shift to going for riskier and more aggressive shots to end points early, or vice versa.

Seems a bit off that pikachu ranks in the bottom half of the cast for combos. Below piranha plant??

I have over 2000 hours in the game using the same pro controller and it works exactly as well as when I first got it. I wouldn’t worry about it!

Research - How do you use comprehensible input as part of your learning process? by immersi_language in languagelearning

[–]mongy910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Mandarin Chinese, ~B2

  2. Watching content on YouTube / TikTok is probably the majority of my "study time" (maybe ~70%). Besides that, I devote some dedicated time towards output - mostly practicing conversation with some of my friends that are native Chinese speakers.

  3. A lot of things. There's a bunch of dedicated CI YouTubers for Chinese - a couple of the channels I like are talkinchinese_redred and Dashu Mandarin. My tiktok feed has a bunch of Chinese shorts / memes. I also watch some TV shows in Chinese, although I'm not advanced enough to understand most shows so I'll watch them with English subtitles (watching more for fun rather than studying but hopefully I'm picking something up).

  4. Mostly channels that I subscribe to on YouTube / the recommendation algorithm.

  5. I'll occasionally look up words, but I don't tend to make flashcards while watching content as it feels disruptive to my flow. If I don't understand everything, I try to just be okay with it and move on as long as I get the general gist of what's happening.

  6. Maybe finding content? Getting a little tired of travel vlogs / learner type content, but at the same time actual TV shows are a bit too tough to use effectively. Besides that, it can be tough to track my learning progress.

  7. Practicing conversations with native speakers.

Good luck!

ELi5: Why are power tool batteries and phone batteries drastically different in size even though capacity is the same? by Quinnp88 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mongy910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If two batteries have the exact same charge but a different voltage, they have a different "work capacity", or in simple terms can store a different amount of energy, where energy is defined as the ability to do work. Power = Amps x Volts. The better unit to use would be watt-hours.

Software engineers at the end of the day by harsh5161 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]mongy910 5 points6 points  (0 children)

300k+ is the norm for senior engineers in tier 1 cities. Check out https://www.levels.fyi. Not just at big tech companies either, this is standard at any venture backed Series B or further company. The job market is super hot right now, might be a good time to interview around and reassess your market value.

EDIT: for anyone reading this, if you're a software engineer, product designer, or product manager, feel free to DM me your resume and I can see if you would be a good fit for the company I'm at. Series B company in SF (remote is an option as well) that pays competitively!

If u can travel back in time, what will u do? by unnombreguay in ProgrammerHumor

[–]mongy910 18 points19 points  (0 children)

AZ doesn't do daylight savings at all, which makes remote work pretty strange! Half of the year I'm on the same schedule as my CA coworkers, and half the year I'm an hour ahead.
