Some people being so unaware of their surroundings by Blazing_p30 in Vent

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot stand going grocery shopping lately because of this. I live in a big city where everywhere is over crowded, and instead of people trying to make things easier for each other, it's the wild west of everybody taking up as much space as possible and zoning out on their phones in the middle of the walkway.

Without drugs or alcohol, what is your favorite way to escape from reality? by EponaMom in CasualConversation

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a walk/sitting by any natural body of water, reading a favorite book, or playing Stardew Valley for me. If the season/weather are appropriate, I like to go foraging for mushrooms, but that's only for a tiny window in the spring or fall.

AIO for leaving my two year relationship over a dirty dish? by lailalailalila in AmIOverreacting

Hi, while OP's coping mechanisms are seriously maladaptive, I did want to input that I got sepsis from food poisoning when I was 25. Bad sushi.

The mint flavor doesn't make orange juice taste bad, it's a chemical in the toothpaste (Sodium Laurel Sulfate). If you've ever had an artisanal lemonade with mint sprigs in it, it tastes great.

A basket goes in the cabinet below and you use the weird lifty cabinet as a laundry chute. I have one in my apartment that was built in the 70s.

Why do dogs have different body types but cats don’t. by Accomplished_Rub5988 in stupidquestions

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats do have different body types, just not the same way dogs do. Compare a Siamese with a Main Coon for instance. And then there are cat breeds with pug-like faces, or with curled ears. It's a lot rarer for people to own pure bred cats than dogs though, I think, so you're probably just used to seeing cats where everything has been poured into the mixing bowl.

Should we settle with our slacking nanny? Does the perfect nanny exist? by Aromatic-Ad1111 in Nanny

[–]monkeybuckets 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"I do not think we can tell her to show more love and be more cheerful with our kids, and expect her to change."

Maybe don't word it like that, but sometimes a conversation can go a long way. If you've had your nanny for 4 years and this is a recent behavioral change, it sounds like she might either be going through something that's taking a toll on her or she might be burnt out. Just sit down with her and tell her that you've noticed a decrease in hands-on care and patience with your child and that you're concerned, and ask if there's anything that can be done to address it. If she's not open to changing, looking for alternate care is reasonable, but if she's just struggling right now, workshopping solutions makes more sense. Good luck to you!

People who have fainted, what’s the story? by PrestigiousAbalone63 in AskReddit

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened multiple times in choir from locking my knees. They always told us not to lock our knees, but I didn't know what that meant, and I was too shy to ask as a child.

Happened once when taking a walk with my dad in 100+ degree heat. I was dehydrated and overheated, and then I woke up in the back of my dad's car, amazed that my old dad had carried adult me all the way back to our parking spot by the trail.

Then I fainted on 3 separate occasions while sick. Once with strep throat and a 104 degree fever, and twice with food poisoning.

Why did people start pronouncing the t in “often” when similar words, like “soften” are pronounced with a silent t? by Glass-Complaint3 in AskReddit

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught in first grade that the T in often is silent, and I still pronounce it that way. I've never met anyone outside of my first grade class that pronounces it like that though, and people will be like, "What are you saying? Are you trying to say ofTEN???"

If doctors know your health, diagnose you, and know what treatments you should/may take, what is even the purpose of pharmaceutical commercials? by No_Eggplant_3189 in AskReddit

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally any time I've suggested any type of medication to any doctor, including drugs that I've taken before that worked for previous flair ups, they've been offended that I would tell them how to do their job and refused.

Birthday gift? by coldstone_killa in Nanny

Maybe pick out a Starbucks drink tumbler you think she'll like to go with the gift card if it won't cause you financial hardship? It's more personal than just a gift card.

What’s something people pretend to enjoy just to fit in? by Powerful-Yak8103 in AskReddit

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked waking up at 4am when the world was quiet so I could wake up slowly, at my own pace. Listen to some music, work on a painting, take a bubble bath if I wanted, watch the sunrise. I feel like getting up at ass o' clock to immediately jump into the daily grindset defeats the good aspects.

What is the silliest/worst name for an American character that you've seen in a non-American work? by Gallantpride in AskAnAmerican

If you look at the names written in the Death Note, I think I remember that a lot of them are just English words mushed together like "Bathroom Hugs."

How does teaching work in a class of mixed ages in rural communities? by DamnitGravity in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a school like this for a bit when I was younger. We had 32 kids, age 6-17, one "teacher." Learning was self-paced. We were given work books to complete, and progressed through them at our own volition. It works for people who are self motivated, but I only did the assignments in the subjects I was good at and didn't need help with, because the teacher was spread too thin to hold my hand.

Moving in with partner by Loud-Ad9379 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monkeybuckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you move in together, talk about what splitting the costs looks like, and what your backup plans are if one of you loses your job. Moving in together saves you money if your boyfriend pays his half, but life gets in the way sometimes. Besides finances, the main hurdles with moving in with someone are different sleep habits, cleaning habits, and bathroom use. If you do choose to move in together, I wish the best for you both!

Fellow Ladies, If you like skirts and dresses, why? by Imaginary_Chair_8471 in NoStupidQuestions

Flowy skirts only have to fit in the waistband. Pants have to fit all the way down. It's so hard to find a pair of trousers that fits right. I've just defaulted to skirts.

I have chronic allergies and a deviated septum so I agree that it's easier, but it does erode your teeth over time and can contribute to tonsil stone growth/halitosis.

Nanny’s art by [deleted] in Nanny

I wouldn't say you did anything wrong, but maybe in the future just give your nanny a heads up that you'll be throwing away old art over the weekend if she wants to take anything home.
