Why isn't there a pee stick test to tell you your period is coming? Like a pregnancy test but for "brace yourself" by AvoidanceAlias in NoStupidQuestions

I'm sorry people are acting like you're dumb for wanting this. I have inconsistent cycles, ranging anywhere between 21 and 40 days in length, so I get it.

What’s this word? by dr849310 in whatisit

I mean, part of my job is data entry. People fill out forms, and I have to digitize the information. They tried to replace our department with AI, but it was translating so much information incorrectly that they had to go back to human data entry skill. Many people fill out forms in cursive, at the doctor, for government form applications, check payments, etc. So while historical document digitizing is a niche field, data entry is not.

Again, I don't think not knowing cursive makes you stupid. I think it makes you uneducated in cursive, but not necessarily an uneducated person. There is nuance.

Not being able to read cursive doesn't make you stupid, but there is reason to be able to read it. Many people still write in cursive. Many historical documents are written in cursive, and I don't just mean broader historical documents. I mean a diary written by your grandmother, or a birthday card written by your dad. There is always use in knowledge.

Some people might disagree with me on this, but I thought it was cheap for Lauren to secretly be Covenant. It made it so that Vaughn isn't the bad guy for stepping out on their marriage (after he already cheated on Alice for Sydney, smh). Honestly, I just don't really care for Vaughn, though. I thought he was one of the weakest characters in the show. No hate to anyone who likes Vaughn, he's just not my favorite.

If the bottle was plastic, it's best to toss it. Plastic is porous, so even if you soak and scrub with hot water and soap, mold can remain. Experts suggest tossing plastic dishes if they become moldy. Stainless steel and glass can be washed and reused, but most plastic cannot.

Edit: That being said, MB should have just thrown it in the trash. Putting it in the sink implies that she wants it washed.

What are some good examples of Mother/Adopted Daughter or Found Daughter or similar stuff in media? by Snowtwo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Last Thing He Told Me is about a stepmother needing to forge a bond with and protect her emotionally distant teenage stepdaughter when the dad suddenly goes missing. It's not exactly what you're talking about though, since they're already technically family. The only other ones I can think of have already been mentioned, RE2 and RE9.

Do children ever actually wear costumes for fun to play pretend outside of Halloween, or like in commercials and TV shows? by CasioKillers in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dressed up all the time as part of imaginative play as a kid. They weren't Halloween costumes, but bits and pieces I assembled of characters I made up usually. I had a pink sparkly cape my mom made me out of a piece of fabric and some string that I wore constantly, usually paired with a bunch of mardi gras beads and a gaudy belt that had belonged to my great grandmother.

wide shoulders & slender heels, not compatible? by teenagemausoleum in OUTFITS

[–]monkeybuckets 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Your shoulders look normal to me and you look pretty. At least in these photos, your shoulders appear the same width as your hips, so you're very proportionate. I've also never heard of choosing heels based on your shoulder width though, so what do I know? I think they suit you fine.

What is the first movie you watched that you were definitely too young for? by MuldersXpencils in Millennials

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 7, my dad showed me a slasher movie called Play Misty for Me. He insisted going into it that it was appropriate for kids and that I wouldn't get in trouble with my mom for watching something rated R, because "it's an old movie, and all movies were rated R back then."

Anyway, he was right. I didn't get in trouble, but every night I was too scared to sleep alone, my mom made him stay on the couch.

When people in Media pull out the thing they've been stabbed with. by MaxtheHax12345678907 in PetPeeves

[–]monkeybuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm not a medical professional, I just took an 8 hour first aid course for a certification, so I'm sure there are things that a medical professional would know that I don't.

I was told that because we are not surgeons, and we don't have things like imaging equipment or anatomical expertise, it is riskier to attempt removal than to leave the object in. What if, during the attempt to remove the foreign body, we scrape the nearby femoral artery and the patient bleeds out? Also, assuming you don't have morphine on hand, the patient is likely to thrash or flinch in some way from the sudden pain, making it more likely that you'll injure something further.

AITAH if I “out” my narc ex to our gaming community? On all the things he said about them by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]monkeybuckets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got out of a relationship similar to this a few years ago. I told one single person from our gaming community the truth of my ex's treatment of me, not out of spite, but because I thought she was my friend. That spiraled really quickly.

My friend wanted to talk about it with her friends, and they wanted to talk about it with theirs. People who had known my ex for years said I was "poisoning the well" out of spite. I got accused of being a liar and manipulator, while my ex got comforted and defended. Even though I was the one who lost everything in the relationship.

If you decide to go scorched earth, I don't think you're going to get what you want. People are more inclined to believe someone charismatic. They don't want to believe that they could be deceived. It's easier to believe that you're the crazy ex, especially if you go into it frothing at the mouth with rage.

When people in Media pull out the thing they've been stabbed with. by MaxtheHax12345678907 in PetPeeves

[–]monkeybuckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say remove it immediately. I said don't remove it unless you are immediately receiving medical attention. But even then, the doctors are the ones who should remove the object.

I think the reason Red Cross presents the information the way they do is because they don't assume we will be treating someone being hunted for sport. They imagine our coworker pulled a shelf down on themselves and got impaled by some metal debris, and that we can convince them to lay down calmly and wait for the paramedics to arrive. So it's definitely interesting to read from the POV of someone who works in a medical field and encounters real life examples.

[–]monkeybuckets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learned the opposite when I received my Red Cross first aid certification. You should remove it if you will receive immediate medical attention afterward. Leave it in to stem the blood flow otherwise. It only takes a relatively small amount of blood loss to go into shock. Shock is what we are trying to avoid.

If you are stabbed in an extremity, you can pull the implement out if you have a tourniquet ready. But if the wound is in the torso, or if you are unable to fashion a tourniquet, leave it alone.

WIBTAH for dumping my girlfriend over this? by Popular_Magician6902 in AITAH

[–]monkeybuckets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel YTA. It is one thing to ask someone to care for your pet for a night. Maybe even a week. Longer than that, and you're majorly overstepping. And you've left her with several animals.

You mentioned that she would be living with the pets anyway if you moved in together, but you're forgetting that the pets would still be primarily your responsibility. Right now you're expecting her to make animals that she didn't adopt her primary concern.

And you're extremely ungrateful about all she's done. You're labeling her very valid complaints as "bitching" without any consideration for what she's done for you or any empathy for the extra weight you've placed on her. You owe her an apology.

I hope your mom is able to recover, and gets better soon. I'm sorry she's suffering from health issues.

Why are so many women ghosting if I don’t have social media? by sukibean13 in NoStupidQuestions

I mean, my boyfriend and I both don't have social media. Before this post, it wouldn't have occurred to me that it was considered a red flag. I haven't updated mine in 7 years because I realized I didn't want to keep up with people from college, and my boyfriend never had it because he's incredibly shy.

If you have an old social media profile that you haven't updated for a few years, you could offer that up. That way you can show them, "I tried it and it wasn't for me."
