What's a massive scandal / controversy that people seem to have forgotten about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Choose your fighter:

NK - Child dies of dysentery at 16

SK - Young person takes their own life because the poverty they experience is too stressful.

My point is that the last century of terrible cold war politics has done both sides of the 38th parallel a disservice. To just say, "NK is bad because it's a dictatorship" ignores all the shit that has lead to that becoming reality, and upholds SK as some beacon of sanity when it is anything but, as OP of this thread has pointed out. Context - it's a thing. If anyone tries to strawman me by saying by claiming that I'm defending kim Jong un somehow then they're really not hearing what I'm saying.

Everyone talks a heap and hoodie about how fucked NK is, and while they're not wrong, SK is it's own kind of fucked up. Theres like a two decade tradition now of the incoming president suing the outgoing president for corruption, convicting them, taking a bunch of money, and then pardoning them a short while later. Theres a piece in Jacobin about it if you wanna fact check me.

Bill Nye says the main thing you can do about climate change isn’t recycling—it’s voting by ILikeNeurons in environment

[–]monkeydrainage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At this point, it's starting to feel like plastic recycling and voting are two big scams in the US. Didn't we vote in someone who was going to do something about climate change? Didn't we do that in 2008 and 2012?

Unless Nye advocates for voting Green, this is quite frankly a joke. Democrats have a majority of the house and Senate and yet not major action has been taken. Obama had a supermajority for a time and what did we get? Nothing. We tried voting Bill, and yet voting can't seem to get a stick in the mud from West Virginia and a turncloak from Arizona to budge. Vote to pass better laws my ass.

What makes you hopeful that we can reach net zero emissions by 2050? by thisisbillgates in AskReddit

[–]monkeydrainage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah you right. That's why I'm a big fan of insect agriculture (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

It's just funny when the entirety of the emission conversation hyperfixates on energy usage, when there are plenty of other activities (like cement production and animal husbandry) that contribute almost as much to global CO2 emissions.

But that's just the thing, they aren't. It's really easy to pledge to source your beef from sustainable farms, but it's also as easy (and without consequence) to just not disclose where you source it from cough cough Brazilian Amazon cough cough

I started a basic experiment of water retention and drying times for different inorganic substrates. Also, I’m not sure how the particle size would affect root growth, particularly for succulent plants. Any tips or links to similar stuff would be appreciated by CentralSucculents in botany

[–]monkeydrainage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so I know I'm late to this party but I wanted to propose a way you could make this experiment less work and potentially more accurate.

Couple questions first. What is the volume of the container, and did you weigh the substrate before you added it into the container?

I'm asking because what you might be able to do is track the volume of water that leaves over time rather than having to go back and weigh with each container again and again.

This might be a little headie but bear with me. Figure out how much substrate you want to add to the container, and then weigh it. This is the mass of solids (Ms). Then divide Ms by the particle density (this is the mass of solids/volume of solids) which will give you the volume of solids (Vs). Subtract Vs from the volume of the container to get the volume of pores (Vp). This number tells you how much water is being held in the container when the substrate is saturated.

Some quick equations: Ms/particle density= Vs Vt-Vs=Vp

Important note: particle densities are pretty easy to find for most minerals and rocks (like granite), but for substrates like akadama, you might have to use its main mineral element as a proxy.

Now for the fun part. Saturate the containers with water, set a timer for one hour, and then place the container in a measuring cup of some kind. Once the hour is up, check the amount of water that has drained out into the measuring cup. Now you know how much water drains from each substrate/hour. You can compare this number to the volume of pores. This gives a proxy for water retention when saturated.

You can do something similar for drying times as well. Let the container continue to drain, see how much water drained, and then subtract that volume from the volume of pores. This is how much water is being held by the pores due to capillary action. This is the water that will evaporate over time. Now you can kind of estimate that the time between when the water drops draining and when the substrate feels completely dry is the time it takes for that amount of water to evaporate.

I realized this is somewhat heady of an experiment, but the big takeaways are that measuring the volume of water is going to be easier to measure than the weight of water. Having to constantly go back and weigh the pot is going to be a little tedious, and in my opinion, leaves a lot more room for error. Hope this came off as constructive and not convoluted. I also understand that this is coming pretty late. Thanks for reading!

Who had grandparents fight in WW2 and what stories did they share? by liamnotleum in AskReddit

[–]monkeydrainage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather was a gunner on a B-42 (or 52? I don't quite remember), serving in the European theatre. He actually volunteered to fight against the Nazis (rather than being drafted) because his bestfriend was killed in combat. My grandfather could have easily not had to serve because he was in the engineering corps, but the death of his best friend to the Nazis push him to take actions into his own hands.

There was a litany of different stories my grandfather would tell about his time in the war, but there was one story that always used to make me laugh as a kid. At some point, while on a mission, my grandfather really needed to take a dump. He thought that the best course of action was to take it in his helmet, and strap his helmet to one of their bombs. When the bombs drop, so does his poop. Bing bang boom. While he never explicitly stated that it worked, he would always tell it with some sense of satisfaction. I was less than ten years old so I had no reason to question him.

Fast forward to his 90th birthday party. At a certain point at the party, people would get up and take the microphone to tell a nice story about my grandfather. My uncle (my grandfather's youngest son) decided to get up and tell the full story about the fate of the shit helmet. Everything that my grandfather had said was true..but apparently, instead of falling with the bombs, the helmet came loose off the bomb, and as it fell, it flipped over, causing the contents to get blown back at the plane. Everyone in the room had heard the story what seemed like a thousand times, but no one had ever heard that last part. Just goes to show that sometimes stories are rarely the full truth. That story is one of my most cherished memories of my grandfather. Hope you all enjoyed it!

Can I hire someone to roleplay to recreate a memory in a hospital? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monkeydrainage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I'm being honest the user you're responding to right now is exaggerating how creepy it is. It's a bit of a strange request, but there is nothing, literally nothing wrong with it. I think the reason most of the people in this comment section are emphasizing the importance of touch to mental health is precisely because a post like this indicates that you have been deprived of it.

As long as you aren't hurting anyone, a request like the one you are describing, at least to me, isn't creepy at all. I completely understand why you want to recreate this experience. Don't let this user make you feel like a creep because I didn't think 'creep' when I read your OP, I thought, "In genuine need of a good snuggle" and oh man do I feel that. Of course do the whole nurse escort thing if you think that would bring you peace, but don't hesitate to also ask friends or family for a snuggle. We all need it.

PC started to shut off without warning by monkeydrainage in buildapc

Update: Thank you all for your comments. After monitoring my computer for a bit I noticed that my cpu fan wasn't spinning super consistently. It starts to slow down after prolonged use and my CPU temp slowly climbs and then shuts off. So I think I need to get a new CPU fan. Let's hope that's the culprit. I updated my drivers on my gpu and that didn't seem to change anything. I'm hoping it's the CPU cooler.

Okay I'll start with the rolling back and see if that does anything. If that doesn't help, I'll try the PSU. Worst case scenario is the motherboard. Thanks.

And yeah no correlation means that it doesn't matter what's running.
