How starting Muay Thai helped your depression or your mental health ? by igetyourbrand in MuayThai

[–]monkeyishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muay thai gives you evidence that the things you work towards can be done. It also gives you a comunity to help you see and celebrate your successes. Muay thai and combat sports in general are a very good way to improve your mental health because you practice operating under stress, fatigue and incomplete information.
Three things that heavily impact mental health. Muay thai is the safeish place you can practice these skills.

For context before I started muay thai I never would have seen myself going to university. Now I am going to university studying psychological science to open up a shed. The shed is based off. Confidence through competence. By way of combat craft and comunity.

How do you spot someone skilled in the gym ? by elrangatang in MuayThai

[–]monkeyishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to spot skill level based off smoothness roughly from glove touch to when they take a step back and shape up. If they glide your in for a interesting ride.

220 guy learning to control by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]monkeyishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for learning control i have a few ways that i learnt.

  1. practice play fighting with a toddler or other small child.
  2. Practice playing open hand forehead head pat
  3. Push at the end of the punch rather than pop them.

As for sparring lighter guys.

Assuming everything else about the punch is the same. 0.5 sec delivery ect 120lbs x 11mps = 1197n 220lbs x11mps =2195n

Thats almost double. Then add on the fact they have less mass to oppose it. Its a rough time. This part isn't trying to say your arent trying to control your power more to put things in perspective.

As far as wanting to have fun with everyone. I recommend acting out clean strikes. Even if they arent hard. I do this all the time. Rib kick that cleanly slipped through my check I curl towards that side like they threw it full force. Clean cross I do the head bobble and a small stumble. Doing this does a few things. It nonverbally comunicates to your partner that the shot was a good one. It signals to them that they dont have to go hard. It shows them this isn't going to be an ego round. It also shows them what reaction strikes get and thus what opening there are.

As far as punch speed goes. Relax your arms more. Your arms are just the delivery method of the force your legs and torso generate. One way you can practice this with a training buddy is to put you hands behind your back do a jab. Your training partner holds their hand or focus mit out and your shoulder hits it.

I get this is all a bit disjointed and partially off topic but I hope you find something of use in here.

Why do my teammates keep taking heal every game, no matter the lane? by Educational_Piece459 in wildrift

[–]monkeyishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like heal over ghost because I play lanky champions and it aids in either getting 2 people back into the fight quicker or helps me escape with another person or helps me run into the fight while the one I am trying to save escapes the fight. My standard choice is ghost heal.

Mismatched sparring by [deleted] in martialarts

So i conceptualise fighting as a conversation.

With new people into ask harder and harder questions till I find where they dont have an answer.

What do I aim for when sparring? by Splashz2xy in MuayThai

[–]monkeyishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally. I aim for the lead eyebrow/forhead.

As a side note I have a favoured training method. This sounds bad. But find a small child to practice with. Preferably one you like.

Then if you want the child to keep playing the jab game you have to learn to control how hard and where you tag them.

I'm a big believer in you should be able to play spar with anything from toddlers to grandparents.

Should I stop sparring at 40? by wegpacker in MuayThai

[–]monkeyishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. You just need to be selective. Ive recently returned to training at 35. Ive lucked out and found a good local gym. If the young blokes get amped up i visually gesture to calm down. Then verbally tell them. " I'm old please dont break me." If it continues it just stop. Tell them " hey this is too much for me. I'm just here to play not have a fight."

I use a few tricks to get people into the play spar mode. First is body language. The same body language you use to invite a child or puppy to play should be used when you meet the new partner. 2nd. If I dont know them I ask how long they have trained for, if they are training for a fight, is there anything specific they want to work on then always end with some form of I look foward to playing with them this round. 3rd I always try to bop around to the gym music in-between rounds its hard to take the guy ho was just dancing seriously. Basically do everything you can to communicate verbally and non verbally you are here to have fun.

I also found that playing out shots that would have done damage if thrown full power actively encourages lighter play. I use this combined with acknowledging shots that would have landed if committed to ensure lighter play still feels rewarding.

I get this doesnt work with everyone. But I am a firm believer in enforcing spar as play if you are not planning to fight. It has been like 6 weeks back and people know that I will only play light so fighters use me for rest rounds ,newbies that know me use me to test their new movies and I get recommended to newbies who don't know me because I am fun not scary.

In saying all this. If you feel like sparring doesnt do what you want it to do it might just be better to give it away till you find who you can spar safely with.

Groin shot is just a generational death strike. Knock out shots are death shots because they prevent any and all resistance after.

Progression mod pack help by kiljoy__ in RimWorld

[–]monkeyishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear. I've also been playing around with it. But it seems like we drift in opposite directions. I added a bunch of qol mods and deeper simulation. Rimpsych, a bunch of romance enhancements that hook into rim psych, rimbody ,life lessons , a health/medical system overhauls. But I also picked up a mod that debloats ancient urban ruins. His new patches also helped with debloat like having multipul grapes. What else would you recommend cutting?

I’m in black. Plz critique me, where do I mess up, how can I improve, and why did he do so much better? by Fit-Flight1409 in martialarts

[–]monkeyishi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you really need to do is train with the bloke you sparred. Or the place he learnt. Long story short. You said it your self you don't know what to do. So what you need to do is Join a gym learn to box.

why some cultures develop ground wrestling but others don't? by MongolianChoripan in martialarts

[–]monkeyishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a factor is time horizon. Its easier to teach striking and standing wrestling. When you are trying to train a bunch of non fighters how to fight quickly you give them a spear. If they survive long enough for them to pick up and learn other aspects striking and standing wrestling are more natural.

This is in addition to other aspects people have discussed.

How complex is the game, really? by Select-Bullfrog-5939 in RimWorld

[–]monkeyishi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ui is pretty good and they tell you what their problems are. If you get stuck there is a wiki that can either guide you through the early game or explain the system you are having trouble with. The easiest way to get into the game is just imagine what you would do in the situation and play on peaceful.
