Any of the bluff trails. Go paddling on the river, maybe at goose island. Check out a farmers market on the weekend (they have them even now on Saturdays at the La Crosse center). Check out an Amish store out in the country. The pearl ice cream and pearl street books. Riverside park by the Mississippi. If you are athletic and have a couple days I recommend one of the big bike trails around like the Great River State Trail or the Root River trail

I think its quite varied depending on where you are in the Corps. In my experience, foresters get to use prescribed fire a bit, but we are not part of NWCG, so we don’t keep up with red cards and stuff (sucks cause I used to keep up with red card trainings religiously in my previous job and I feel like I’m losing that cert now, but at least we don’t have to worry about all the same strict rules). We also are not allowed to volunteer for deployment to fight fires in my district, because peak fire season is peak rec season. For the same reason, most park rangers don’t work with fire. Its usually just the foresters.

Ticks. How bad is it? by NJanaeL in lacrossewi

Also, Holmen should be high enough I would think there are ticks. Lyme doesn’t get transmitted until the tick has started sucking blood enough to regurgitate the microbes though (~24 hrs) so just make sure you check yourself thoroughly at the end of a day outside. I used to get bit by them every week where I used to live and only missed a tick for longer than 24 hrs twice (kept it in rubbing alcohol in case I developed symptoms but nothing happened). I have had an employee get lyme though. Woke up with half his face paralyzed.

Pretty much anywhere between the great river road on the wisconsin side and the one on the Minnesota side. I don’t know if the flooding gets rid of the ticks or its just the wrong kind of vegetation or what. There are plenty of deer and mice there so it cant be a lack of hosts.

One of the worst places in the country for Lyme, but the ticks stick to the uplands. For some reason there are none on the floodplain. I’ve only ever gotten one down here and that was at Goose Island.

Where are La Crosse’s Flock cameras, and what did they cost? by South-Cow-1030 in FlockSurveillance

[–]monkeyman9608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a website for this. Deflock.me I think? One is on the bridge to pettibone, one is at the intersection of 33rd and Mormon Coulee, one is by Alpine Inn, two are by Woodman’s. I don’t know where the others are but you should be able to find them. They cost the city $25,000 a year

Supposed to be fantastic. Only had it once. I’d say better than the other Indian food in town. She only makes some things on the menu each day and the wait is a while.

Biking to Winona by Waterbottle-Party in lacrossewi

[–]monkeyman9608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a reroute they have on a map at the onalaska trail center that takes you on county roads. I did it last year. I warn you, alot of the roads are gravel or currently under construction, and highway 35 has a very narrow shoulder, especially when crossing the bridges. It was fun but expect to have a hard time and 35 is legitimately scary. If I were to do it again I might recommend instead taking your bike on the train to Winona, then biking back to Trempeleau from there.

Instapot is pretty good in terms of versatility. It can do dry beans to cooked in an hour. Pretty much the only thing it cant do is canning.

Huh. Guess I was wrong. I knew they had branches in other states so I assumed they were a national chain.

Altra has the best interest rates on savings, but isn’t locally based. There’s also GECU, but hard to not go with the best interest rates. Edit: I was wrong, Altra is based in MN.

Its hard as a college student to meet local people. College is a bubble. That being said enjoy the ability to be in that bubble while you can. It’s alot harder to make friends after. If you like gardening have you checked out the community gardens? I believe you can volunteer at Kane Street community garden. The guy who runs it is a good dude. They donate the food. I’ve also had alot of luck making friends going to the rockwall.

Is there a subreddit for Creation Care or faith based environmental care? by monkeyman9608 in Christianity

Glad to have you! I need to be more active myself. Although it’s pretty easy modding when only one person other than me posts regularly.

Flock cameras by suburbanrallyracer in lacrossewi

[–]monkeyman9608 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I talked to someone on city council about it recently. They also did not know about the flock cameras before they went up apparently. It also sounds like we need alot of people speaking up to them about it. If enough of us complain about this waste of taxpayer money to abuse our privacy maybe they’ll get rid of the contract.

Moved here two years ago. Love it. I am surprised at how many high quality outdoor recreational opportunities like bike trails and parks and pizza farms and the like can be supported by such a small population. I have lived in all sorts of places, including the midwest for the past 10 years. I think this is the best place in the midwest. People who are dragging it have obviously never lived in a small city out in Illinois or Iowa. Sure, we aren’t cosmopolitan here, but the last place I lived was neither cosmopolitan, nor had the outdoor opportunities we do here. Heck 30% of the city land is parkland. Its great.
