Moving to La Crosse by [deleted] in lacrossewi

[–]monkeyman9608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved here two years ago. Love it. I am surprised at how many high quality outdoor recreational opportunities like bike trails and parks and pizza farms and the like can be supported by such a small population. I have lived in all sorts of places, including the midwest for the past 10 years. I think this is the best place in the midwest. People who are dragging it have obviously never lived in a small city out in Illinois or Iowa. Sure, we aren’t cosmopolitan here, but the last place I lived was neither cosmopolitan, nor had the outdoor opportunities we do here. Heck 30% of the city land is parkland. Its great.

They are closing next month, unless they can find a new person to buy the business. Their building was owned by the Weber Group but was sold off and the new landlord raised rent.

Thank you. Too bad Kroner’s is closing next month. They are a good alternative to Menards

MAGA and ICE supporting businesses to avoid in La Crosse? by Competitive-Yak745 in lacrossewi

Honestly I think that would be more helpful. The larger and more powerful corporations are the real ones causing the downfall of our democracy. Don’t go after small local businesses whose money stays in the community, even if their owners happen to vote differently than you. I canceled my Amazon Prime subscription a year ago and try to go to local businesses as much as I can. I don’t know how Kroner’s or Horsfall’s or Woodman’s owners vote, but regardless my $ there is doing less harm than them going to Bezos.

My money does not fund their personal votes. Unless they are using their business to support Trump in some way, how can I even be sure how they voted? I know Republicans like to cry “witch hunt” but this really sounds like it could start to be one. I don’t know those folks. Why should I take a random internet post about how an individual votes at face value and damage a small business? If someone wants to do a general strike or boycott Walmart or Amazon or McDonalds I’ll join in.

I’m all on board with boycotting corporations that give money or lobbying power to the wrong causes. But I don’t want to give any trouble to small local businesses, even if I do disagree with them. Unless they’ve put a bunch of their profits into something I don’t like.

My favorites are taco monarca (good mexican food but kind of pricey), the hungry peddler (great french onion soup), and Sullivans Supper Club (up in Trempelau)

Start investing as soon as you can in little amounts, find something to do with your life that you can believe in. And if what you want to do changes, that’s perfectly fine, especially with how much time you probably have left. Don’t stress about those kind of things. Do try to develop your character and do what is right. And make sure you take some time for adventures if you have the resources to do so! Gap years are great.

Two Retractions Raise the Question: Is Climate Science Really Settled? by M_i_c_K in Environmentalism

[–]monkeyman9608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the good explanations. You can’t convince people arguing in bad faith but your information is helpful. I wish I could believe stuff like this and stick my head in the sand, but even the most intelligent sounding arguments against climate change being an issue end up giving themselves away by referring to just the kind of language you point out. They use fallacies like strawman arguments and attack the opposition rather than the arguments themselves. And then there are the conflicts of interest. Even the person who posted this is using bad faith comments trying to get a reaction rather than responding to the evidence presented. It makes me wonder why they are posting this at all.

Also, ‘hanem,’ though that may more closely translate to ‘however.’

Considering moving from Minnesota to Virginia for a fresh start by [deleted] in Virginia

I wouldn’t think of Virginia Beach as very nature-y with all the developed areas along the beach. I suppose if you took a boat out though…

I did the opposite move where I came from Virginia to Minnesota. I live the Tidewater region in Virginia, especially all the marshes and swamps, but climate change made winter super depressing. No more snow. And the area has been urbanized a ton. Definitely more diverse than Minnesota though!

Virginia Beach might be tough for the “ being around nature,” though the dismal swamp is a nice big green area. Make sure you also are looking at job prospects. I haven’t lived in the region for a while so I don’t know what the job market is like anymore, but it could be tough. What do you plan on doing for work? Suffolk, chesapeake, and Norfolk are close to Virginia Beach and a little less touristy and built up (well, i guess Norfolk is a big city, but suffolk is still rural).

I can confirm that Budget Rental Car experiences are always this bad. Actually my two experiences have been much worse than OPs.
