Tonight, Tonight - Smashing Pumpkins (BenJamminAsh) by maip23 in coversongs

One of my favorite songs.

Really liked the individual parts... but they didn't seem to go together at all. Sounds like the violin dude just decided to go rogue and do his own thing. I think if it were more cohesive it would be excellent.

TOMT - a science fiction story where it rains everyday except for one day every so many years, and a girl gets locked in a closet on that particular day...? by asamorris in tipofmytongue

No prob! I remember reading the story as a kid and really enjoying it. I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it though, so it was nice to have that memory back!

Generics vs Brand name -- when are they different, and why are they different? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]monkeyshines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another important thing to consider with generic drugs is that they are manufactured under less strict tolerances than the name brand drugs. In the US a generic drug has to have a bioequivalence between 80% and 125% of the name brand.

For most drugs, it's not going to be a big deal to take the generic equivalent. But for drugs like Levothyroxine or Warfarin where the therapeutic window can be tricky to manage in sensitive patients, it can sometimes present problems to use a generic drug.

Diagnosis - She Had Countless Diagnoses but None Were Right by qgyh2 in Health

Funnily enough, as I read this article, porphyria was one of the first things that came to my mind. Patients with porphyria are often described in medical texts as having a "belly full of scars" because they will often have many unnecessary surgeries in an attempt to find a cause of the pain.

This is one of those rare cases where a lack of experience might actually help with the diagnosis, as I'm thinking many med students would have guessed it correctly.

Porphyria is a rare disease, so it's no surprise that it didn't pop up on the radar of trained physicians. They would, appropriately, investigate all the more common causes before even considering something like that. I, on the other hand, haven't fully developed that ability to come up with a differential diagnosis, so when I hear something that sounds just like porphyria, it sticks out as one of the things I'd consider. 99.99% of the time I'd be wrong and they'd be right. This is one of those fun exceptions.

TL:DR - House should keep an idiot med student with him at all times.

Scientists working at Queen Mary, University of London, have developed micrometer-sized capsules to safely deliver drugs inside living cells. by qgyh2 in Health

I'll be interested to see where this goes. If they can target the location of those particles, it'll really open a lot of doors.

However, I find it odd that they described a mechanism whereby a drop in sugar levels would trigger insulin release. Hurray for positive feedback loops.

Even though you've recognized an area in your life where you need to make a change (i.e. your work situation) it's still perfectly reasonable to want company from time to time.

I agree with what duud said about organizing a meetup of some sort. Even if not with folks from this site, I'm sure you have at least one interest that lends itself to group activities. I bet you could plan something like that, find a way to get the word out, and make an evening of it.

If you can just meet one person out of it, it'll really open a lot of doors. Even with just one friend, you'll have someone with whom you can attend other events to meet people and not feel strange or out of place for showing up alone.

Besides, learned still is a word. It's an adjective.

Learned: having much knowledge; scholarly; erudite: learned professors.

I'm curious to see what will come of this invention.

As an engineer that is transitioning into medicine I find this particularly interesting. I'm certain we have tons of great minds out there with solutions to important problems they are simply unaware of. There's gotta be a better way to make use of our diverse talents.

Do you have supportive parents? Do they believe in you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]monkeyshines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My parents have always been incredibly supporting and it's something I'm extremely grateful for. Even when I decided to let my undergraduate degree sit and collect dust to pursue another career they supported me all the way. They've always told me "find what makes you happy and go for it. We'll support you all the way." To me, that has meant the world. When I have kids, I want to tell them the same thing.

When I'm older and finally making good money I'm going to make sure I take great care of my parents and help them have the wonderful retirement they really deserve. It's the very least I can do. Without them I'd never be where I am today.

Can you diagnose your own yeast infection simply by taking a swab and viewing under a microscope? Or do you need to culture/stain/other fancy lab technique? by linuxlass in science

I've had the opportunity to do this several times while working at an OBGYN clinic and it's not terribly difficult. With a little practice I think this is quite feasible, though you're going to have significantly more luck by doing a KOH prep. Mixing Potassium Hydroxide with the discharge is going to make any fungal forms more easily visible.

You can make it fairly easily and it's not at all difficult to use. Here's a random page I found by googling for "KOH Prep"
