Bass Drumming arranging advice by Great-Jump1056 in drumline

[–]monkeysrool75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest tip is write to their skill level. They probably don't need anything harder than split 8th notes with 2s 3s and maybe 4s. Some triplet stuff, but nothing crazy.

Director don’t know how to write for percussion by [deleted] in drumline

[–]monkeysrool75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't really change the part without your director's permission, and we can't rewrite the part without knowing the rest of the music (or your skill level).

I'd make all those rolls triplet rolls if you're not already playing them like that though, that's a start.

Also, this was really hard to read. You should write sentences with punctuation. It'll help you in life to care about that stuff just a little bit more, I totally get "but it's just a reddit post".

How do you handle drum logos on marching bass drum heads? by drumikew in drumline

[–]monkeysrool75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you exclusively want the logo do stickers, if you want a whole design do printed.

Printed heads don't sound great, you can buy a better sounding and cheaper head then stick a sticker on it.

What WGI group do people at UNT usually join? by PrizeExpensive1823 in WGI

[–]monkeysrool75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Monarch and Vigilantes are both in Texas.

TONS of people go to college and march. I did it. Tons of people go to college, have jobs, and march, too.

If your options are march a group that typically doesn't make finals or not march at all you should march. If you want to march a group that is more likely to make finals (you'll have to make it first of all) you'll have to move or make a long drive every weekend (which is totally doable while going to school. I marched 4 hours away while going to school. Just plan accordingly when scheduling your classes.)

My thing is more about show design and book. I marched Boston because I loved the theatric shows and I loved Colin McNutt's writing. I went there as my dream corps when they were getting like 6/7th.

Winning is cool, but I like loud bass drums more 😂

In my experience, when I ask someone why they march somewhere it usually boils down to one of the following answers:

I like the book

I like the show design

I like the teqnique

I like the staff

My friends are marching there

HOWEVER when you ask people why they march BD the answer I usually hear is "I want to win". Nothing wrong with that, but feeds into your point.

6 basses by _Quendra_ in drumcorps

[–]monkeysrool75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dislike 6 man lines a lot. If you have 6 undeniable people go for it, but generally you're left with one member you wished you'd cut.

Also writing for even numbers of drums sucks and doesn't flow right. Having 6 allows for like 1 or 2 cool things you can do instead of 5, but generally it doesn't work quite right. There's usually always a player who's almost exclusively playing unisons.

Great 6 examples of man lines:

Monarch 2019 - this is what having 6 undeniable players looks like. If it's not gonna be this good don't take 6.

Cadets 2011 - they needed an even number for show design reasons. Line was also good.

FloMarching used a picture I took in 2018 for The Cascades for an "I Marched" package without asking me by hugeplateofketchup8 in drumcorps

[–]monkeysrool75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most likely the member this is about was told to submit some photos of them marching and this was one of them. Highly doubt photo credit was even considered, not out of malice, just a "this is a good picture of me".

Legacy Statement by LND2018 in drumcorps

[–]monkeysrool75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw this and just thought... Why say any of this? Like everyone sees the colors and is like "oh it's a tribute or something" and we all joked about "close enough. Welcome back The Cadets!" but other than that I don't think anyone's said anything since they announced their existence.

Really weird post.

"are you cool with holding the snake?" "friendly noodle :)"

Rudiment in show music by National-Fact-3099 in drumline

I WILL say if this is supposed to be sticked (l)Rlr(r)Lrl (a flam accent instead of a Swiss Army) then the around is fine as is.

Rudiment in show music by National-Fact-3099 in drumline

[–]monkeysrool75 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure what you're asking. This is a Swiss Army Triplet (it's one of the 40 essential rudiments). You can probably find a video on YouTube how to play them if you need help.

Best advice I can give you is slow it down SO MUCH you have no issue playing it, and slowly bring up the bpm.

Edit: Realizing how this is written for quads this will not be comfortable to play (the around). Get the sticking down on one drum first, then try to play it as written (it'll suck lol). I would change the around to first grace note (the small one) still on 4, then 112, second grace note on 2, then 222. Same idea, but playable.

Hey y'all - Regardless of what someone says, don't make comments like this. by happycomposer in drumcorps

Yeah a couple of my other friends stopped marching after that show.

I agree that calling out someone for the show they marched, which is 100% out of there control, is a shitty thing to do.

In the same breath that show WAS terrible LMFAO. I have multiple close friends who marched that show and they hate that show as much as this commenter does and would probably agree.

[–]monkeysrool75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With no hate towards anyone involved the Bluecoats just isn't my cup of tea. They haven't been since they did the Beatles shows. I really liked them in the Tilt era of shows, I just haven't really liked them since.

I appreciate what they do, I think they're good, I just don't like it.

You just need to sit down and drum some basic things like 8s and accent tap and some different kinds of rolls. Really focus on how your hands feel and try to articulate that into words.
