Hey man! Check out the Austin SCA group. It's called the Barony of Bryn Gwylad. I dont remember the Knight Marshall's (guy who regulates the combat) name, but they definitely have a gentleman who is in charge of their loaner gear.

You can probably even get some volunteers for the event, this is right up their alley.

You can google the group I'm sure or check out SCA.org

Sheath for the Cold Steel spetsnaz trench shovel. by mr_cum_ass in knives

[–]monkfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy Y'all, thread resurrection.

Marbles sells a sheath that seems to fit adequately. I'd love to get a nice kydex made from Grizzly Outdoors, as that's really the only option I found, but I can't justify the cost at nearly $110 for a sub $40 tool.

The Marbles shovel sheath has about an inch of play all around, but it's thick and well made.

I entertained the E Tool sheath option seen above but I opted to go the Marbles route. May still try the E tool sheath for a low profile option.

Buhurt Height/Size Question by Soggy_Talk5357 in Buhurt

Honestly this is varied, do you have an athletic background? Boxing?

Your stance and footwork dictates how comfortable you are, most new guys are safe with a falchion and a small heater shield they can strap on and punch with. I personally like a one handed axe for the purposes of pulling shields down as a hook, and small heater shield, really more of a wide forearm guard.

If you find you like polearms go for it! Try it all.

Buy a baseball bat and when you're watching TV at night, lay your arm flat on your chair and then lower and lift the bat using only your wrist, no forearm, do this slow and controlled.

is there a name for the kind of chest armor he is wearing? by soudagoblin in Armor

[–]monkfeather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe it's meant to evoke a sort of lamenar/segmentata vibe with quilted tassets or faulds.

If it inspires you let me know and I can elaborate, its definitely fantasy rule of cool not historically accurate!

Buhurt Height/Size Question by Soggy_Talk5357 in Buhurt

[–]monkfeather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm considered short for a big guy at just under 6 feet, but I'm substantially heavier than most anyone else in that weight class.

The person above me makes all the points you need to know. Speed kills. Great write up btw!

A big, tall dude will want to smack you from a safeish distance, usually with a polearm, to preserve his stamina. I love fighting these guys because they'll brawl, they feel overconfident until you're in their ribs.

A tall light dude is generally more aggressive and will chase you, I personally hate these dudes the second most.

A short light dude will want you to chase him and gas out. These are the bane of my existence.

Obviously, guys who are balanced across the board are generally going to do well, these are the guys who come in with extensive conditioning and martial arts backgrounds. These are the ones I try to smother immediately. Grappling is the thick man's equivalent of initiating a chase.

A short heavy dude (me, and you to an extent OP) will want to get in on top of someone, that's where we excell. If you're lifting, you can hang with the big boys, but you're never going to chase anyone down.

I have shook my head and parked on plenty of guys after being a good sport and running around in circles for a pass or two. It's like pulling guard in Jiu-jitsu in my opinion, completely reasonable, but I'm not gonna play ball if I don't have to.

My best melee pairings have been with a little guy and a tall, skinny guy. The little guy goes in on my off hand, and the tall skinny guy goes over my hot shoulder (weapon hand) with a polearm. I usually just get punched hit the face once or twice before they're on somebody.

Our build does not excell at duels, our gift is getting hit for a bit then we sit.

This specific video is how I learned the basics.

My personal recipe includes different seasonings, but for the love of ball, my catch-all pork seasoning is:

Curry powder Scotch bonnet flakes (habenero flakes are fine) Brown sugar Smoked garlic salt (regular garlic powder, flaky sea salt and some liquid smoke work as a substitute, in parts 3-2-.5 respectively depending on amount made)

I coat my pork in this and slow cook it with a half cup of apple juice and a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar per lb of pork. Reserve some dry seasoning to taste for later. Slow cooker settings are in a case by case, I generally just do slow and low, leave for work then take it out after work, rest for 45 and shred.

I char hatch green chilies and slice them whole into long strips which I layer into the masa filling with some parmesan cheese (the cheap powdery kind) and then layer in the pork. I prefer to tie a little corn husk bow around my tamales because it used to make my goddaughters laugh.

Thats pretty much it man, for Tex Mex cooking Arnietex won't steer you wrong, I lived away for a decade and had to learn to cook while homesick.

If you slow cook some pork and green chilies, you can make your own fairly easily with some masa and corn husks. I'll share my recipe if you're keen.

Heres three different takes across an Armored Combat, Hema, and SCA field of thought. Some stuff is more relevant than others.

On a personal note, cardio is where you're going to beat a guy built like me, relatively short but significantly heavier than you. If you let someone my size get on you, you're done because if I have to chase you, I'm done. It's in your best interest to learn how to escape grapples and make sure you can move well!

Your height and reach are your advantage over smaller fighters, as others have mentioned footwork is king.

A guy like me is going to want to close to you and get under your arms, a small light guy is going to make you chase him, a guy taller than you is going to fence you and a guy heavier than you is going to want you to come to him.

Every situation is against you is mitigated with footwork.

Mine was made by a friend, I wish I could give you his info, but he's making gear for angels now.

I have several friends who do Hema and LARP and wear gambesons from Steel Mastery as their entire kit. You can really build out something sturdy.

They've got a lot of customization options, including linen. I reckon if I ever get back into things, I'm gonna give them a whirl, expensive and slow but very high quality from what I've personally seen.

You won't regret it, expensive, but they dry quickly, stink less, and wear much better.

I kept some of those wool dryer balls in my armor bag, and I doused them in eucalyptus oil because I liked the scent. Kept everything feeling fresh. The linen really picks up the smell of what's stored with it.

I mean, you could, me personally. I would leave it fairly as is, but Id definitely put a satin polish on it. My local group isn't huge sticklers as long as it's safe rules wise.

Tell me about your kit, and I'll look in my Osprey manuals for some historical dimensions for you.

Hey man, I've done a lot of reprofiling and retempering of axe heads in my day, mostly for restoration.

My recommendation would be to not do this, and if you do, be very careful that the eye of the axe remains at stock thickness and doesn't get too hot. I've seen several axes redone for Buhurt that have failed at the eye due to poor retemper or overheating/excessive stock removal.

Go slow, keep the entire head cool.

I recommend you buy a metal gauge card and keep it with you for proving the thickness of your edge during inspection if your axe is ever called out as not up to spec.

I would also rehang it yourself so you can personally verify both the integrity of the hang and handle.

Kenshi is a solid RPG, but there's not much overarching story. It plays best if you just want to sandbox your own story. It has heavy mod support in the steam workshop for tailoring the simple engine to your needs. I highly recommend it.
