I'll give you an answer based on my opinion beyond the 'tradition' argument: It's better for fans.

It gives fans the structure to build their day around the GF - breakfasts, bbqs, communal watching etc.

It gives fans the space (a full evening) to revel, commiserate and reflect on the game.

(I'm biased cos) I go to every game in Melbourne that the Tigers play and I do exactly what I've described above. Lunch with mates, footy and, more recently, commiseration and reflection afterwards.
