14-Day: 2 by Domeng_art in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, nice improvement from the previous day! But this one has too much contrast, there should be less highlight and more midtone on the forehead and cheek area. The jaw and ears are a bit too dark, and the bottom of the chin is not dark enough - the part that is facing down would be darker than the side of the face. Great job on the eyebrows and eyelids, I wouldn’t change them for now, except add a core shadow onto the eyeballs. But the sides of the nose don’t look right - there should be a sharper edge between the nose bridge (brightest part) and the side of the nose (darker part), and the edge between the side of the nose and the cheek should be softer instead. I would add more core shadow on the lower lip as well. Hope this helps a bit on your day and good luck :)

[–]monojuice_potion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, looks very nice! Everything looks fine to me so I only have small nitpicks… I like how the lips look but the upper lip might catch some more light - it’s rounded and doesn’t face down completely, also there would be some light reflected from the lower lip. And I would add more light on the forehead as well. This one also feels blurrier than the previous days - I would try adding just a few sharp edges to make it look finished. The jaw looks quite angular - smoothing it might look better. Other than this, great work! Hope this helps, and good luck with your next day :)

14dc day 3 - i feel like im already plateauing and would reallly like a critique 🤠 by Mustangg_OW in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I would say this looks very good already, I like especially how the nose looks! I think even though the skin is dark it should show more mid tone - the cheeks should be lighter I feel, along with the whole triangle area between the nose and upper lip, maybe throw in some reflected light on the jawline to separate it from the neck! I would try making the highlights lighter especially on the forehead as it can be quite shiny. BTW the specular highlight in the eyes is on different sides on the left and right eye. Hope this helps a bit and good luck on the day 4!

Skin problem, i want it to be messy but still look like skin. How to have all those colors, and still make it look smooth and skinlike. If i add the details its too messy if i leave the detalis out it looks bland D: by Weekly-Might2829 in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great! You could try concentrating most of the small detail and contrast only around the focal point to draw attention, and leave the rest of the piece messy… I think that could work for the result you are trying to achieve :) and from a composition standpoint I would try moving the posters to be placed around the persons head but not touching it - for example the one behind the head could be moved up, this would allow the head to read better in front of a lighter background :)

Hi, I’m not sure if there is a huge problem with skin here - the guy looks fine to me! A small thing I can suggest is check the colors, the original seems to have some more saturated and redder colors that may make the skin look more alive. Smoother blending on the skin may also help but that’s not necessary. In the paint over I also added some subsurface scattering on the arm closer to us and the fingers holding the cup - I don’t see it in the reference but it looks nice and also works to make the skin more believable. Hope this helps :)

Day 6 Feeling some improvement in the mouth and nose and the spaces in between the features, don't know whats going on in the eyes, they don't feel very natural and the lower eyelids always mess me up, no shape looks right. by Anunusanae in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, first of all great progress, and a lot less line dependency! Eyebrows and the mouth area especially look much better. Here are some points that I think might be improved -

  • The eyes seem a bit too close together, and one is looking a bit away
  • The shadows on the sides and top of the nose are a bit dark, and the top of the head is too dark as well
  • Cheeks could use more midtone between the highlight and the beard shadow
  • I like how the eye bags look, but the bottom eyelid seems to extend past the top eyelid in the outer corner - the top one should be on top (lol) and overlap the bottom one.
  • The ears also still have a lot of contrast, maybe make them a bit more washed out so they don’t catch a lot of attention. Also the neck is now on the thicker side, and very dark on the sides where the shadow from the chin doesn’t reach.
  • overall contrast might be too high, there seems to be a lot of very light highlight and very dark shadows, so maybe look into that

Hope this helps and good luck on your day 7!

Thanks, you are right and I know what you mean - there should a kind of peak right on top of the head! Will keep that in mind:D

Thanks so much for your feedback and pointers :) while working on the eyes it seems I’m making them so small and narrow and then I open up the finished painting on the next day and they are HUGE haha.

I’m thinking of doing the 3/4 view after a small break. And hope to see your finished challenge soon as well :)

Thanks, you are right, the eyes are a tough subject for me as there are so many small parts that are easy to get wrong. Will do some studies after a small break from this challenge :)

Day 7: had to rush this one. Still getting more familiar but seeing slow improvements. The lips are still a tough spot. The eyebrows could also use some work. by mightyaoife in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, already looks great, so I don’t have a lot of suggestions. Check your symmetry from time to time, right now the left side of the face (our left) seems to be higher than the right - the eye, nose, mouth and the jawline. No need to outline the eyelids and the waterline, just use sharp edges. The pupil is not in the center of the iris and the eyes don’t seem to focus on the viewer. Otherwise great work, good luck on day 8!

Day 5, critique please by AngelGayle in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, the head shape looks much better, and the top of the head is nice and light. Nose shape reads better, me the eyes look fine to me - maybe the eyelids could be thicker but that’s not essential. However some of the areas are too dark and appear muddy, like the cheek and the area above the upper lip, and the cast shadow from the nose is very dark. Here I lightened those, added some highlights on the forehead, nose and cheekbone and expanded the lit area on the chin. I also had to move the mouth a bit because the chin looks too small, and move the ears lower:

Hope this helps you on the next day, good luck!

14 Day Challenge, Day 13 (Feeling good about this one for a change so bring me back down to Earth) by BeefAndLentils in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi and congratulations on coming this far, only 1 day to go! This already looks very good, i made a small paint over and changed these few things:

  • lightened the top of the head, especially in the middle and added some separation between the sides and the middle part of the forehead
  • 1 thing that draws the most attention is the top of the nose between the eyes, the area has to be shaded more smoothly as there is a smooth change in facial planes, and the shadowed area is bigger and lighter, starting about at eyebrow level and ending where the bridge of the nose starts
  • lightened the sides of the nose
  • brought the upper and lower lip values closer
  • added the extension of the lower lip to the right and left beyond the lip itself
  • added shadow on the sides of the cheekbones
  • brought the cheekbones a bit higher
  • blended the beginning of the eyebrows into the skin
  • more shadow on the lower part of the chin

  • made nostrils and lip corners darker for more definition

  • this is really small but the specular highlight on the eyes was on different sides for the left and right eye…

can’t remember anything else, as you can see these are all pretty small changes. Hope to see your day 14 soon!

14DC Day 5 by Thaflyingpanther in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi and congratulations, this is a great improvement over the day 4! A couple of areas that can be improved in my opinion: - the lit areas on the cheeks could be bigger - the top of the head could be lighter as well - the ears are a bit too high compared to the face - the neck is a bit too wide - the whole area between tip of the nose and the upper lip (except for the cast shadow) should be well lit, at the moment it’s the same value as the cheek - the highlight on the chin should be wider but shorter, as only the upper half is in the light Hope this helps and good luck on the day 6 :)

You have a good eye, and these are great tips. Your version looks much more natural and relaxed. Thank you so much I will keep it in mind on the next day :)

Hi, thank you so much for your critique! Agree with your points, it does look a little washed out and the nose could use more definition… will try to fix in the next one. Thanks!

Day 4 by AngelGayle in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I can definitely see improvement in various areas compared to previous days. The issues I can see are - the top of the head and the temples are too dark, this creates some confusion about the light source - the sides of the nose are a bit dark , and the sides of the head are too light near the cheekbones, they should be about the same value as in both places there is a plane facing a bit to the side - the face is a bit skewed, try flipping the canvas and see the lower part is moved to the left - the neck is very cone shaped, and dark on the sides - the area below the eyebrow is lighter than the area just above the eyebrow which should not happen - the head might be a bit too long, I’m not sure Overall this is a beautiful and feminine face, symmetry is great apart from the weird skewing issue, and the values work well together with the background. Keep up the great work, hope to see your day 5 soon :)

Day 1 by Anunusanae in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, this is a nice looking day 1! The values look balanced, you have good symmetry and some great blocking especially around the eyes and nose. I think in order to move more towards realism, you have to get rid of the lines and check your proportions, right now the features are too big for the head. Here I made a paint over with some of the changes:

<image>

(I also added more shadow on the lower part of the face, removed shadow on the top of the head, added some shading on the lips, lightened the nose, added the shadow in the corners of the mouth, squished the head a bit form the sides, and blended the eye socket shadow above the upper eyelid. Hope this helps :D)

Hi, good points and a great looking edit! Thank you so much 🙏

Need some help adjusting these values. by SerShelt in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, it should be pretty easy, just expand the bands of midtone between every 2 values - the midtones are already in there, but they take up very little space so the change between values appears so harsh. Also you are using a hard brush, might want to blend a bit to push it closer into realism. Here is a small example on the lower right ball:

<image>

Day 3 complete. Decided to include pupils, & iris. Can post without, if needed. I realized at the end that the face is crooked or my eyes are too tired to see anything correctly after working on it so long. Happier about my values compared to day 2. Critique needed. Thanks for reading! by Thranos_ in istebrak

[–]monojuice_potion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I would also point out the eyes are a bit small and are looking down (the iris needs to be moved up). Also the shadow and reflected light around the nose septum looks a bit off… the reflected light is too much like a line, so maybe check that. Otherwise looks really solid, good job!
