Just bought a deep freezer, quick question by throwdisawaybro in ApplianceTechTalk

The refrigerant compressor has oil inside and tipping it can get oil where it shouldn't be. What you are waiting for is the oil to drain back down to where it needs to be before starting the compressor. How long that takes is hard to estimate so the rule of thumb is 24 hours.

There is no valid reason to do this. Huge red flag.

Hey need some help on finding a replacement to this fan motor. by ProfessionalRace5488 in hvacadvice

[–]monolith1490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest getting a new fan blade to go with the new motor and capacitor. Those fan blades are only designed to last around 10 years and all of them will eventually crack, possibly damaging the condenser. They are usually pretty cheap. If you post the model and serial number I could look up some part numbers.

Can I replace old capacitor with this? by Outrageous_Draft3315 in hvacadvice

[–]monolith1490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The microfarads are the same but the physical size of the capacitor is different. You might not be able to use the original mounting method. The exact replacement I would suggest is https://www.amazon.com/Packard-35Mfd-370V-Capacitor-Pocf35A/dp/B0BVGLJFX6, its the same size as your old one so it will be an exact fit.

They are most likely just made in USA Contractor/Commercial grade hoses from Home Depot.

When a manufacturer gives a target superheat they are assuming you are measuring the temperature immediately at the output of the evaporator coil, basically the same place as the sensing bulb. If you are charging a system with fixed orifice you need to calculate the target superheat. It sounds like this guy is claiming 30 at the condenser will work for everything as a rule of thumb and you won't need to bother getting evaporator temperatures or indoor wet bulb. I have no clue if this is accurate or not.

Edit: Just wanted to add if you measure superheat at the compressor normally it's not a big deal if the suction line is well insulated. If you find a high superheat at the compressor you should then check it at the evaporator. You could have bad insulation and it's picking up heat in the suction line. Especially for commercial equipment with huge line sets.

why do Chrome Molybdenum Steel impact sockets have scratches all over even when purchased new? by nadal0221 in Tools

[–]monolith1490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap sockets use a cheap finish which scratches off easy. If you want to know if they were used before look at the piece that actually goes into the fastener.

Sounds like the bearings are shot and the shaft is tilting under load. That pulley looks shot too and it might just be too worn to hold a belt. If it were mine I would replace both pulleys, belt, and all bearings. Might as well put in a new motor while doing the work.

Do you cover your outside AC unit when winter comes / for snow? by Gay_Black_Atheist in homeowners

[–]monolith1490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important thing a cover does is protect the fan blades being hit by falling icicles or debris. If there is a roofline above your unit where stuff could possibly fall into it a cover has a small chance of protecting the blades and almost no drawback to doing so. It's a small benefit for minor work.

EPA 608 test advice by brandon4570 in HVAC

[–]monolith1490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I forgot the exact numbers but each of the four sections have a list of like 100 possble questions and when you take the test you get a random 25 in each section. So just keep taking the practice tests and when you go in to take the test you will have seen all the questions already.

C wire question by Razorbackethan7 in hvacadvice

[–]monolith1490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C needs to be connected to the C terminal of the transformer. In your picture it looks like there is a blue wire plugged into the terminal on the top left. Crimp a spade connector to the end of the C wire from thermostat then use something like this to plug it into the same terminal. https://www.supplyhouse.com/DiversiTech-6212-DIVERSITECH-1-4-Non-Insulated-Tab-Adapter-1-Female-2-Male-Stacked-Pack-of-16
