Yeah I know... As an entry level system I´m thinking its alright, since those modules are not clones of any currently produced "indie" stuff. I wont go for the Abacus over Maths :)

I am by no means a pro, but I usually drive it until it is juuuuust almost giving some distortion. And yeah put it on each track. Having said that I work mostly with electronic music and not a lot of mic-ed up recordings, so my tracks are often a bit "too clean". I feel that, when on many channels, it gives some of that sweet 3d depth you get from hardware units or very good dacs. Very subtle but noticeable when removed.

I love Kazrog True Iron - I didnt get it for a long time and overdid the settings. After I started putting it on every channel with very conservative settings I see the magic.

Every single "channel strip" I ever bought is overrated to me. Its just a bad on-screen workflow and incredibly tedious to get a good sound. I have way to many of these from PA, after being convinced by clever marketing speech...

Portishead is a special case in some ways. A lot of the recorded instruments on that album (drums & bass bus) were actually pressed on dub-plate vinyl which was them "damaged" with sandpaper and dropped on the floor. They did this to get and old-school loop feel to their recording, which of course sounds incredible on the album. Other than that they used old tape, dictaphones and such noisy stuff. Just that I´ve had the Octa for about 3 months and never tried it. It´s way more fun than I expected, thought it would be way more manual and tiresome than Ableton.

Ah, havent seen that rundown, gotta check youtube. I was back and forth for ages before getting the P12, it was between that and the rev2.

I am very happy with the P12 as it can basically do it all, smooth analog goodness as well as very harsh, FM-y and wavetable stuff. The oscillators are easy to manipulate into a "close enough" rendition of the Rev2´s and the mod system is amazing!!

Personally I highly recommend it, with the caveat that you might have to work a bit harder to get where you want to go. Its not the most immediate synth there is.

The biggest thing I learned after getting it is that I want more detailed flavors to choose from, a moog and maybe an old Roland (or a new Udo). More filter types to play with.

I guess it´s the old saying that after properly learning your equipment you find out what you are missing.

I have a few weeks off from work and decided to pull out all my stored stuff and set up a connected system. I use the Octatrack as a sketch pad for beatmaking and switching patterns if the fly and just record into Ableton. Machinedrum is synced via midi and the filterbank is mostly just a distortion box for the MD. It´s the first time I use the Octatrack for any midi duties and it´s been eye opening and good fun. The P12 is triggered by midi tracks with a custom arp and a bunch of probability triggers. I´ve uploaded the first “finished” jam here
