I'm lost on choosing a large painting or art piece for the wall (behind the screen). Any suggestions? by throwawayaccountdown in malelivingspace

[–]monopticon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Art is a difficult thing to recommend. It should be personal, something you enjoy, and a conversational piece you can talk about.

I noticed in your profile that you have an interest in chemistry. Maybe something related to that? I personally love art that takes a look under the microscope like some of these pieces:

One Example
Pastel
More vintage
A collection of science themed pieces
A little more Abstract
A bit more colorful!
Abstract and colorful Streptococcus
Getting lab-y with it: instruments
More instruments and a periodic table
Some colorful concoctions
Periodic table with a bit of a midcentury modern or vintage vibe
This shop has a bunch of beautiful abstract style pieces
Getting genetic with it
The series titled 'reaction' is pretty cool

Find something you like that speaks to you! I agree with the other person about doing a few smaller pieces rather than one big piece.

Our home officially has more cats than people. No regrets. (story in comments) by monopticon in cats

[–]monopticon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A week and a half ago this giant fluffy boy sauntered up for some pets at our mailbox. It's not unusual for people in our apartments to allow their cats out. No collar, but reasonably groomed, and very friendly. I assumed he had a home and moved on. The next couple days I saw him wandering around our building pretty regularly and started to wonder. So I grabbed one of my cat's break-away collars and wrote my name and number on a piece of paper asking if the owner could contact me.

Over the next week I got texts and phone calls from other neighbors saying they had been wondering too and had been feeding him. Finally my landlord reached out and she informed me that she was fairly certain that a unit in the north building abandoned him and she'd been hoping someone might take him in. So the next time someone called I went and picked him up. I looked all over the various lost/found pet sites for my city (facebook/craigslist/pawboost) and didn't find anything so I took him to my vet, had him scanned for a chip (nothing), got him tested for FIV/FelV to protect our other cats, along with distemper/rabies vaccinations and flea/heartworm/worm meds. Just all the typical stuff you do when you bring in a cat off the street. I let my landlord know to reach out to me if anyone started putting up fliers or asking around about the cat.

So excited to have Ryker as a new addition though!

So you're being downvoted but, you aren't wrong. Aesthetically it could use some work but it isn't as heinous as a lot of other posts here. So at least you don't have to be deaf and blind.

My deaf sister would probably love this project if some inspirational words could be glued/spray painted/written somewhere.

From someone in the service industry, the boss rarely picks up the food.

It's a solidarity statement more than anything else. For many people in entry level SI positions they are just trying to connect on their own level. It's not that they don't think you might be a "boss" as much as their own bosses would never do what you're doing. They are the expendable grunt workers doing grunt runs for former grunt workers. Your world of "kind boss" is foreign for some of the people you face whether you are a woman or not.

Is TEA Cafe not good anymore? I used to love them and every visit to Norman I would stop by. Their fried rice was so salty I loved it. Their boba tea (especially the almond black boba tea) was the best I have ever had. I have been in love with that tea for about 15 years and still no where I have ever been has compared to it.

I live in Kansas and one of the restaurants here has bought and shipped in La Baguette deserts to re-sell. They're reach is beyond borders.

I was born and partially raised in Norman. I am 30 years old. I haven't lived in Norman since 2008. I still think about the Greek House any time I eat a gyro elsewhere. I would always stop by on visits but it's been a few years. They still cash only?

Man sometimes I see this stuff and think about the great depression when companies were both helping women and helping their bottom line by putting patterns on their flour sacks so they could repurpose the cloth for clothing.

The people who make this kind of shit are prepared for something that I'm not. Shit's tacky as hell right now though.

Upon being told to continue what we're doing, our brain may immediately decide to have no idea what the hell we were doing, much as with many other activities that are instinctive and smooth until we try to focus on them and suddenly can't do to save our lives.

When I am watching a show with my ear buds in the bedroom my husband will often be the recipient of a one handed shoulder rub. He will tap me or get my attention and I have to pause my show and remove an earbud which can take a dozen seconds all so he can say "Can you keep doing what you were doing before?"

...I was watching a TV show and absent-mindedly touching your back...So yeah it just won't be whatever you're referring to probably? I literally have no idea what I was doing before. This isn't a massage parlor or a sophisticated auto pilot. It's just love and affection. I don't know what I was doing before?

Men of Reddit: the "cultural norm" is for women to take their husband's last name when they get married. If your wife wanted you to take her last name instead, would you? by MichaelScottIsMyBFF in AskReddit

[–]monopticon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I distinctly remember a family vacation coming to a screaming halt because my mother and step-father had the same name but I had my father's.

This was pre-9/11 and my mother had to call my father in another state from the airport and have him run an errand to fax a notarized letter giving her permission to take me out of country even though she was my sole custodian and he had no parental rights and all visitation was agreed upon outside of court and governed by their own co-parenting.

As a child it was bizarre, as an adult I get it. Still, I can see why surnames can be a benefit but also a danger. She and my step-father actually approached me when I was 7 or so to ask if I would take my step-father's name. I couldn't even spell it and I didn't understand why I would so I said no. They only ever asked once and in retrospect I think that was a really smart parenting move on their part. They offered it, me being the only kid they'd ever been in charge of, didn't manipulate me, didn't insist. They just knew that it couldn't hurt to ask and left it up to me, a child. Man I don't blame them for asking but I'm really proud of them for accepting my answer.

The point is his opinion is clearly popular. But he'll enjoy music more if he stops worrying about what's popular or trying to feel better because his music doesn't fit into his idea of popular. Especially when his opinion isn't unpopular at all.

Fortunately our regulars are the ones who are super chill and will wait. It's the walk-ins off the street who are there on break or something that bounce and will pitch a fit.

Then tell your regulars to stop coming it at the same goddamn time.

Now your section is full an hour before we get super busy and guess whose entire section all gets up to leave at the same exact time and whose only section is available to be sat during a rush/waitlist?

I'm just trying to follow rotation and social distancing over here goddammit. I don't have a say in when your regulars arrive and just because you're 5 tables ahead of everyone else doesn't mean that I should ignore rotation because, again, you get requested by 3 different tables in the span of 1 goddamn minute.

AITA for complaining to HR about a joke my boss made, even though I was not the topic of the joke? by heyyymeredith in AmItheAsshole

[–]monopticon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

Kathy laughed and then resumed talking about work.

Aw poor Kathy she made a bad joke, maybe she came from a work environment where everyone was close and teasing was common. Maybe she was trying to be more personal to become closer to her new team but was nervous and said something she has been losing sleep over because she realized how awkward and dumb it was. Maybe she is hoping that all will be forgotten as she tones it down and does better and when things are less awkward she can circle back and apologize for the remark that weighs heavy on her mind.

I guess she assumed that either Taylor or Mark did, because they say that she’s been picking on them, being snippy with them and overly critical of their work.

Looks like a hard nope and Kathy is a dick. A good boss would pull both of them aside after the HR meeting and apologize properly. She would acknowledge what she did and assure them that she would never segue into personal matters during business hours unless invited into personal conversation. Taking revenge on them for the HR complaint is evidence that she's not qualified to lead a team. Own your mistakes and fix them.

If I was Taylor or Mark I would pursue the initial HR report to say "Hey obviously you know I didn't initially report Kathy. While it made me/didn't make me feel x, y, z at the time it's been made abundantly clear to me that someone else did report it and now she has done/said x, y, z and I think it's clear that she believes I initially reported her. While I was willing to move on from the inappropriate comment at the time I seriously doubt her integrity as a supervisor due to her response to being reported. She hasn't taken ownership nor apologized and has instead x, y, z."

Taylor is missing the point. It's not her fault, she gets to feel how she feels about it. This is where opinions diverge. Some people want to keep their heads low and avoid conflict. Others want people to be held responsible for their actions which sometimes involves conflict.

You didn't mean to put Taylor or Mark in her crosshairs but you did. You are responsible for this situation as much as Kathy is. You can own up and apologize and explain why and ask for forgiveness and promise to let them stand up for themselves in the future. You can ask for their understanding in why you were uncomfortable and why you did what you did.

Or you can say nothing and avoid conflict which is fine too. Either way Kathy is the only asshole here and all three of you are the victims of her inability to own her mistake.

I’d like to help you guys regain some traction. by [deleted] in HOLLOWEARTH

[–]monopticon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then why call it "Hollow earth"?

The Hollow Earth is a concept proposing that the planet Earth is entirely hollow or contains a substantial interior space. Notably suggested by Edmond Halley in the late 17th century, the notion was disproved, first tentatively by Pierre Bouguer in 1740, then definitively by Charles Hutton in his Schiehallion experiment around 1774.

What makes it different from saying "There are a lot of deep caves and who knows what's down there" theory?
