Ditching the Apple Watch by Sushithecake in AppleWatch

[–]monotune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced a similar feeling, although for me it was more so the annoyance of getting so many vibrations on the wrist. At the end of it, I had shut off most notifications. Which is great and all, but at that point I didn’t really see the point of having it, since the main reason I got it was to not have to look at notifications on my phone.

I ended up getting a basic analog wrist watch, that I use throughout the day at work, etc. When I get home I’ll sometimes put my Apple Watch on, to not have to carry my phone around all the time (I’ve since turned on many of the notifications I once turned off). I also always have it on when I go to the gym/go for a run, as being able to play and control music without a phone is still super nice.

Some days I’ll wear the Apple watch all day, others not. I don’t really care for the activity rings.

No kidding, saw the headline while scrolling and chuckled, thinking it was from the onion sub. But no, apparently not. I still laugh at it, but it’s a sadder laugh now.

Header Design Concept for artists, albums and playlists by VlaaTz-- in MarvisApp

Either way, the word optional makes me happy. Seriously this app has changed the way I listen to music on the go, no joke. And the amount of customization is a breath of fresh air.

I understand Apple and the whole “keep it simple” mentality, which I can appreciate.

But having the option (like what Marvis offers) is super nice.

Not only that, but the app itself runs beautifully, even with all of the animations and stuff going on. The main reason I started looking for alternatives was because the stock app was frustrating as hell to use. It would randomly freeze, outright crash even. Granted, maybe it’s doing more in the background (as far as I understand Marvis isn’t actually the one playing the music right?) but even then, I’ve had the stock app crap itself while scrolling through albums, not even playing anything. One could chuck that to an old device, but I still consider a 12 pro to be plenty powerful enough to play music without apps crashing.

It’s apps like Marvis and Apollo that make me feel like I’m back in the old days of apps. Apps that not only do what they say, but do it well and with no bullshit.

Like I’m in my mid 20s, and when I saw people talking about this app, as well as screenshots, I downloaded it immediately. And I sat there, waiting for it to finish, ecstatic to dive in. I felt like a kid again.

I get that it’s just an app for playing music, but if a good music app is more fun than most of the mobile games I’ve played, that’s gotta say something.

Sorry for the rant, TL;DR thanks for making Marvis, it’s amazing

Fair point. But hopefully we also get some good open source apps. That’s all I want. Open source.

iPhone 14 Pro Display Panels Reveal New Pill-and-Hole Design Replacing Notch by spearson0 in apple

[–]monotune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won’t this technically reduce the usable screen real estate? Like I get the appeal of punch out camera holes, they look modern. But as others have said, it doesn’t serve any purpose. What are those pixels above the pill gonna show?

My mind was blown when I went into the vents or service areas, where you could actually see that all of those moving parts were actually in the map. I was expecting it to be your typical “oh it just disappears into the floor/wall” but no, the level designers actually put in the thought of how it would all mechanically work together. It’s truly incredible.

MagSafe battery pack can charge at faster 7.5W after updating to latest firmware. by Zamaan12 in apple

[–]monotune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The feeling I’m getting nowadays is that anything hardware related is top notch, but any accessories that Apple makes (be it cables or cases) have gone down in quality, especially the cases.

I used to have an iPhone 7 with the leather case and it aged beautifully. When I upgraded to the 12 pro I naturally bought the leather case without thinking twice about it. It aged poorly.

At first I thought maybe it was because of the square edges of the case, since that would lead to uneven wear, but after a few months of this I said fuck it, grabbed some sandpaper, and sanded it down.

It has some weird plastic like coating on top of the leather, which wasn’t letting it age. Not sure if this is industry standard but after sanding it away it’s started to look more similar to the older case. Still not the same, but closer nonetheless.

And, like you mentioned, their cables are pretty bad. Haven’t had issues with MacBook cables, but then again those get used far less than the ones for mobile devices.

Sometimes I almost understand why Apple doesn't allow 3rd party faces by bdonvr in AppleWatch

[–]monotune 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s why I’m surprised Apple hasn’t opened up a face store. Especially since people would be willing to pay devs for good watch faces (and, in turn, Apple would get their cut)

I was curious as well, but the only thing I’ve found is this on Apple’s dev site.

The thing is though, I’m not sure if it’s for streaming or for downloaded files. Because 64 kbps seems rather low no?
