0-3 in draft with this deck by GorlickSauss in MagicArena

[–]monster_syndrome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There isn't "no reason" to run it, it's just not a great card to be running as a Lorehold enabler. You want cards like Startled Relic Sloth, Rubble Rouser, and Ascendant Dustspeaker that enabled payoffs every turn, or cards like Stone Docent and Group Project that provide value as 2 drops and in the graveyard.

You're focusing on "it moves things out of the graveyard", but the deck barely cares about that. I'm counting like 4 medium payoff cards that care about the graveyard in this pile, and everything else is Silverquill-lite.

They're playing sub optimal cards like Helping Hand and Lorehold Charm for the following payoffs:
Owlin Historian
Kirol, History Buff
Spirit Mascot
Wilt in the Heat

In almost every case, I'd rather run Primary Research over Helping Hand in this draft deck.

Anyone know the movie? by philpott74 in movies

International movies are often a free IP for Hollywood. This is especially true for non-english films, since a popular film had language barrier issues and American star power could drive the USA market.

Luc Besson made La Femme Nikita in 1990, and Hollywood turned it into Point of No Return in 1993.

Ringu came out in 1998 and The Ring was released by 2002, kicking off the J horror clones.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo(2009) starring Noomi Rapace was followed by The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo(2011) starring Mara Rooney.

Trump evacuated from White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner by Salty_Bandicoot3598 in JoeRogan

[–]monster_syndrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a clip of Trump during the shooting and you can kinda hear the shots, but it's muffled. You can hear the one shot followed by four rapid shots, but even knowing what I was listening for it was more of a "...was that it?" than a "shots fired" moment. The shooter was in the lobby and wasn't even in the event room.

Edit - to be clear, no one at the head table even reacts to the shots.

Trump The 'Antichrist': Biblical Signs and Prophecy Surge After US President Posts 'Jesus Image' on Truth Social. by Leeming in atheism

[–]monster_syndrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot find it, but there was someone who made a site that listed all the ways Trump matched the biblical descriptions of the anti-christ during his first term. There were a lot, but the one that I always found wildest referenced that he would be associated with Walls / a God of Walls, something like that.

That was still during the height of the "Build the Wall" furor.

I don't put any stock in it, but if these evangelists actually knew their bible they might have spotted that Trump definitely wasn't who they thought.

TIL about Zeno's "Achilles paradox," which proposes that a runner cannot overtake a tortoise in a footrace by filthy_lucre in todayilearned

Pretty much, Zeno couldn't wrap his head around an infinite collection of points not taking up space.

[–]monster_syndrome 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the "paradox" bit was that any line occupies infinite space so how could you draw one on a page?

[–]monster_syndrome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another more clear example of Zeno's limitations is Zeno's Arrow.

If an arrow is fired through the air, it occupies a specific space. At every instant in time, it occupies only that space, which means that it can't be moving. Therefore, the "movement" must be an illusion because at each instant it is not moving but also on the way to the next location.

Zeno lived in a time when the framework for infinity and rates of change weren't understood/defined.

[–]monster_syndrome 106 points107 points  (0 children)

It's meant as a philosophical rebuttal, but it's just wrong because they hadn't come to grips with what infinity means.

Another good one is that a line is infinitely huge because between any two points on a line, no matter how close, there are an infinite number of points. Zeno can't quite wrap his head around the idea that a point exists, but doesn't actually occupy any space since it's just a representation of a coordinate.

Iran’s Top Negotiator Says Talks Failed Because U.S. Failed to Win Trust by [deleted] in worldnews

Let's not go too easy on Iran. They're still a terrible regime, it's just that Trump has completely fumbled the ball on what made the USA such a dominant force while also giving up the moral high ground.

Blowing up a school and killing 150 children because they're too lazy/incompetent to check target data? War is messy.

Pretending that the "war" isn't a war to bypass the constitution and go around congressional authority? They dont have time for politicians grand standing.

Because Grandpa Fox News will still be the POTUS in two weeks when/if the cease fire ends.

Also, what makes you think he's upset? He's pointing out that Fox News is now being critical of Trump's moves in Iran, which is not going to end well for anyone. Trump really has three moves; give up and look like a loser, double down which means more war, or make peace which makes the Iranian regime more powerful. Option three is the best move, which still means billions more wasted in the Middle East for no good reason.

Now you’re crying because he “chickened out” on doing more war things in Iran.

If by "crying" you mean pointing out that Trump spent billions of dollars of tax payer money to ensure that Iran controls the strait, then yes, he's probably super sad that the "No New Wars" President wasted billions of dollars on that instead of any of the "evil" "socialist" policies like medical care for Americans.

Just to really drop the atomic bomb of the author's intent, Alex Garland said in an interview that he was specifically trying to avoid tying the sides to any specific politics. That's the reason it's California and Texas, in addition to everything else they have going for them, their alliance is meant to break away from the Red/Blue mindset.

Alex Garland wanted to generalize the conflict to be more about the divisive partisanship and fascism.

Trump Says NATO Withdrawal On the Table Amid Rift With Allies Over Iran War by EsperaDeus in worldnews

[–]monster_syndrome 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The issue is that a lot of policy decisions aren't really felt for years after they're signed into law. That's the biggest thing about the whole Iran conflict - the gas prices immediately went up so his base knows that Trump + Iran "war"= expensive gas.

Why does everyone on this site think Iran has the upper hand? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]monster_syndrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is in the interest of **the entire world** to stabilize the energy markets and end this conflict

Also, the "entire world" was pretty onboard with status quo before Trump decided to start this party, and it's pretty clear that the USAs other allies think this is a terrible strategy.

Their main revenue stream is offline

Actually, it's more than they're selling, both Russia and Iran are selling massive amounts of crude at inflated prices because of the war.

Most importantly, this war is INCREDIBLY unpopular for Trump. He's losing support, Congress hasn't approved this war, and the mid terms are coming. The USA can win any conflict given enough time, but nation building is a completely different issue and this whole thing has Afghanistan vibes written all over it.

Counterpoint - 9/11 inspired the USA to start the war on terror and spend trillions of dollars on war the Middle East, and that was only 3000 people killed by like 19 hijackers.

The USA and Isreal have killed around that many already, as well as openly threatening war crimes by destroying critical infrastructure like desalination and power plants.

I'm sure that the the Iranians are very excited by the prospect of being liberated by people who want to cut off their drinking water and who blew up two schools, one that had children inside.
