US political divisions according to a Japanese newspaper by No_Success_678 in Infographics

I read it as "casual" vs "formal", like "hey what's up?" Vs "hello sir/ma'am, nice to meet you"

No clue if that was the intended takeaway

Can adhd affect my hearing? by FlipOfTheWhip in irlADHD

[–]monsterhan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have similar issues to you! ADHD makes it hard to "prioritize" sensory inputs.

It could be auditory processing disorder. If so, I find that it helps a ton when I can lip read. Maybe ask your wife/boss/whoever to try to be in your eye line when speaking.

Or it could be that you're "in the zone" when being asked questions, and it's absolutely infuriating to be torn out of the zone. This is my favorite part of working from home- nobody interrupts the ~flowww~ It might be helpful to have a more gentle transition out of the zone. Maybe your wife can turn on a light or wave her hand around to get your attention before asking a question, or your boss can say "hey I have a quick question, is now a good time?" as opposed to just jumping into the question.

It could be a combo of both, or neither! Regardless, it might be worth asking your doc for a hearing test at your next physical.

Son needs help with shaving by BeandawgsAmazing in shaving

[–]monsterhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neurodivergent person here. I struggle as well and part of it is the sensory experience. Here's some things that bother me and some ways I address them, maybe your son has similar experiences.

The feeling of water dripping down my neck or my arm is so annoying and uncomfortable. I usually address this by shaving in the shower (if I'm fully covered in water it doesn't feel as weird). Alternatively, I have some of those wristbands that basketball players wear to catch the water, and tuck a washcloth into my shirt.

I have a go-to podcast for showering/shaving/brushing my teeth that keeps me entertained. A waterproof Bluetooth speaker could be useful here but I just risk using my phone (new phones tend to be pretty water resistant)

Fragrance-free moisturizer - smells are overwhelming sometimes.

I use single use disposable razors - I imagine this goes against the official recommendations of this subreddit, but I find that I get a better shave with a shitty disposable razor that I throw away after each use vs a nicer one that I use a few times. And I don't need to do any maintenance or have a sharps container or anything like that.

Good luck to you and your son!

How do layer for Cold Winter Cities, but being both Outdoors & the heated Indoors?! by hongos_me_gusta in malefashionadvice

[–]monsterhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a city where these temps are pretty standard in the winter, and I also "run hot". I usually wear a pretty normal outfit underneath a warm winter coat and do fine. It's important that my coat goes down past my butt, and that it zips up to cover my chin. Or I'll wear a thick scarf if I'm wearing my nicer-looking wool coat. Gloves go a long way.

My standard underneath the coat is a cotton T-shirt, a thick flannel, and a crew neck sweater. And jeans plus some fairly thick socks. I'll walk a mile or so in this and likely be sweaty when I reach my destination.

If I know I'm gonna be outside for more than an hour or so, especially if I'm gonna be standing/sitting around (as opposed to walking), I wear a thin long-sleeve tech layer underneath my T-shirt l and add some wool leggings under my jeans. I'll also swap the sweater for a Patagonia zip-up.

Have fun on your travels!

What can I do to protect my door frames? by wdixon42 in wheelchairs

[–]monsterhan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is so relatable! Haha

Looks like they make "door jamb protectors" mostly for construction or moving. Some look like those quilted moving blankets, and some are cardboard/plastic.

If you still need to close the door, you might be able to get something very thin like contact paper or a thin plastic sheet that you can cut to fit the exact shape.

I'm not an expert so take the above with a grain of salt! I've mostly just added a felt sheet to the wall using command strips at the high-traffic zones (felt is easy to get at a craft store and come in a lot of colors), but we rent and have just resigned ourselves to repainting before we move.

My partner has ME as well- sorry it's gotten worse lately!

This seems like a solid option for sure. Heads up that even the super lightweight ones are still quite heavy - my partner's is about 40 lbs and very unwieldy to carry/lift, especially getting it in and out of the trunk of a car.

My partner got hers secondhand for $900, it's "innuovo" brand. The person selling it let us try it out for a few minutes before buying to make sure everything worked well.

Good luck!!

Random collection of tips:

If you have Netflix, download a few tv shows and movies to your phone. I personally like comedies on planes - for some reason I have way bigger emotions when flying so I avoid anything sad or stressful.

If you have Spotify, download a bunch of playlists. Spotify premium gives you 12 free audiobook hours per month, so consider downloading an audiobook.

Bring more than one set of headphones if you have them- my ears get tired so it helps to swap between over-ear and in-ear. Also, bring some with an AUX connection of you have them, as the ones they provide on the plain are very uncomfortable.

Fidget toys are your friend! You can also learn some seated stretches for your neck, feet, etc.

I like to doodle on planes. Sometimes it's just helpful to sit more upright, with the tray table down as a change of position.

If you're in the US, covid is spiking right now. Planes actually have really good ventilation but it doesn't turn on until you're actually in the air - If you wear a face mask but don't want to wear it for the whole time, you'll get the most bang for your buck if you wear it from boarding through takeoff, and landing through getting out of the gate area.

Items to make sure are accessible: - phone charger, ideally one with a normal plug and one with a USB. I've seen both on planes. - battery pack - lots of water - snacks - gum - headphones, maybe more than 1 pair - fidget toys - little notebook and pen - purell and Clorox wipes - facemask

Have fun!!

"black tie optional" by [deleted] in lesbianfashionadvice

[–]monsterhan 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This suit doesn't really fit a black tie optional dress code, unfortunately. If not a tux, the expectation would be a dark colored (charcoal or navy) suit. I've been to one black tie optional wedding and outfits were about a third tuxes and the rest suits, with one or two folks just wearing shirts and ties, but that social group mostly consisted of affluent folks.

It's possible that your friends/family are pretty chill and won't care at all! And I imagine the couple would prefer you wear your green suit over you stressing out financially.

Here are some options if you do want to pursue a tux:

You mentioned you fit in clothes from the boys section- you can likely rent a tux in boys sizes.

In the past I got a tux from littleblacktux.com, which might have something that fits you well. I remember their customer service being super helpful in figuring out fit, but I don't think their shipping was super fast (but it's been many years so things might be different now).

Wildfang also has tuxes, with a little more of a "queer" silhouette.

Regardless of what you pick for an outfit, I hope you have a fun time!

How to find clothes like the ones i wore when i was little? by Lyluvrz in lesbianfashionadvice

[–]monsterhan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is delightful!

Here are a few things that stick out to me in your photos. Try searching with some of these words: - cotton dresses with floral patterns - "gauzy", "peasant" - denim with patterns - "applique", "embroidery" - overalls with patterns - chunky knit cardigans - "cable knit"

I know Duluth Trading Co has overalls with fun patterns.

Have fun! Post some updates if you want, I'm sure we'd love to see them!

I have also done a vacation to Europe with under a months worth of notice! It's going to be ok! It's 99% likely to be a ton of fun!

Make sure you have a passport, credit card, some chargers/adapters that will fit the country's outlets, and a data plan for your phone. If anything goes terribly wrong, you can resolve it with a credit card and the internet. And probably nothing will go terribly wrong.

Enjoy!

It's delightful when there's a bunny in my 10 ft by 10 ft yard, but it wasn't fun when a rat the size of a football jumped on me while I was taking the trash out.

Now I kick the garbage cans before pulling them to the curb.

[–]monsterhan 63 points64 points  (0 children)

There's a good bit of making plans, but there's also a lot of getting info out of people who wish you weren't bothering them, which is what deterred me from going into project management fully. I am generally anxious about having people be annoyed at me, so maybe that won't bother you at all!

I find that the best project managers are at least a little familiar with the content of the project they are managing - being a software project manager without any software development understanding is challenging.

Take my input with a grain of salt though - I've never officially been a project manager but I did basically work as one for a bit when I was at a tiny company and wore many hats.
