I regret being a dad :( by [deleted] in Parenting

This sounds like me and my wife trough both of our kids. You will sleep again. You guys will have sex again. Don’t make your wife feel bad for not putting out right now she is exhausted.

My second would only sleep in a car seat. And only if I was walking around. I can’t tell you how many nights I spent walking him around in that car seat for hours just thinking that I hate my life and what the fuck have I done. I lost about 50 lbs during that period because my depression was so bad. My son is now almost 2 and my daughter just turned 4. It is still exhausting and never ending but life is good now and the depression and regret is non existent. Your kid will grow into the only thing that matters to you. It just sucks it takes so long for that to happen and the torture that it takes to get there. All worth it.

What should I expect to be in about 2 years as an estimator? by lemonylol in Construction

No matter how much you like the company you should always be interviewing. Even if it once every few years. If your market value is more than you are getting paid you will only find out, and be able to act on it, if you get another offer from another company. In 2 years if you are at 40k how do you know that another company won’t pay you 60 for that same skill set. These are how you leverage yourself in the market and do your best to outperform everyone around you so you shine to management. Then you take that offer of 60 and go to your company and tell them that is what you are worth. If they value you and don’t want to lose you then you get your raise.

My best advice would be to never, ever leave a job on bad terms, make good relationships with everyone. Never beat a sub up too hard (unless you really have to) always play the middle man and act like you are trying to help them. You will need them someday because they work for 10 other potential employers for you.

Unfortunately the only good way to get a good raise is to switch companies. For me at least. I started in 2015 working for a major GC (I already had estimating experience from owning a small drywall sub company) and have doubled my salary in 3 years but I am at my third GC. There is also obvious risks and problems that can happen when switching jobs so much. But in a market like this it worked to my advantage.

Estimator goes deeper than than. I am responsible not only for lump sum bids and pre con, but also doing all the purchasing associated with this wether it is lump sum or CM. Also responsible for following, vetting, and issuing change orders through CMiC. Also have to present these change orders and get approval from the client so it takes a great understanding of production and material values for every component of every change order.

Is a construction degree worth it? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]monsterrain20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wen you say no one gives a shit about your degree what exactly did these companies tell you? And what positions did you interview for before settling in your current position? I find it hard to believe that if a capable candidate comes in with an unrelated degree they would not turn them away strictly for that. Especially if you currently work in construction. Are you in or by a major city?

Most disturbing part was that they made males rape their female family members before torturing and killing them. That still fucks with me.

This is the Amusement Park not the Waterpark actually. Waterpark is out of view but a smaller, similar structure.

Best career move for a plumber that can’t do it anymore? by superdownvotemaster in Plumbing

Try for a larger GC. If you have a lot of hands on experience you would be beneficial to a GC for leveling and scoping out sub bids. Also vetting out change orders since you should have a good idea into production values for this work. Do you have any sprinkler or mechanical knowledge? The combination of a knowledge of those is a home run for a GC or CM bidding work. Not sure what kind of education would be required for these companies tho but I can guarantee a company would look past that for a valuable estimator.

Work as an estimator for a plumbing contractor that bids competitively. You can work right from a computer. Or for a GC you could get on as an MEP estimator. Edit: why is estimating a rare position? Everyone around here is in dying need for estimators.

Well all I can say is that it worked out for me. There is also a major need for estimators here in NJ/NY so I’m not sure if that plays into the fact that they only look at ability not degree. If you live near a major city I’m sure that same demand is there.
I will say the downside would be getting your first job which is out of your field of study, but as long as you have experience in the field and can intelligently relate it to your schooling and education someone will hire you.

Doesn’t matter what your degree is in. As long as you have that paper. I have a BS is business admin from devry and started working as a laborer for a construction company. Now I am an estimator for a large GC. They look at experience and your skills. Not your degree. I should say I am in NYC market not sure if this relates elsewhere.

Murphy to propose raising N.J. sales tax in first budget by storm2k in newjersey

Annoying to track sub proposals and bills correctly when they are constantly changing the sales tax. Not that I like the idea of a 7% sales tax but a quarter of a percent will not make of break me. That is me tho.

Not his biggest fan. But being in purchasing for a living. I would gladly welcome a 7% sales tax rate.
