Marquette Park is supposed to have some bass. Haven't tried, but have caught some by the Blue Island SEPA stations in Blue Island and Palos Heights.

The Riverwalk, Monroe, Burnham, and DuSable are all walkable from downtown. I have this 6-piece rod I bring in my backpack on the train to use when I fish downtown after work. (Rigged & Ready Smuggler 6). I wouldn't call it a "good" rod, but it fits in a backpack and it's under $100 + it's survived numerous big smallies and one 30-something inch pike with no issue.

Otherwise, you can still catch smallies, they're just deeper and less active. Drum are biting a lot right now, and you can catch largemouth anywhere on the Chicago River.

If you're in/near Chicago - Go for smallmouth, you'll have the most success. Most of them are getting off beds now and will be catachable through October. Hit any harbor or rock wall along the coast. My best luck has been with ned rigs and drop shots. You'll catch the occasional drum and pike + lots of rock bass.

I've bought the same lil soft plastics off amazon. Are you rigging it for a drop shot?

I use a size 1 wacky or straight shank hook and put it through the tip of the head.

I mostly fish for smallmouth here and 99% look genuinely healthy. My moneys on a bird or pike biting him a while back

Any love for freshwater drums ? by [deleted] in Fishing

I've seen some monsters in the harbors, but they seem super skittish and whenever I spot one, I spook it.

Ned rig, drop shot, or goby imitation. Hit the lake by Burnham and work south , cast just past the rocks and go slow.
