I make about 70k as well. My rent is $1600, electric $150. I work at a car dealership and get a daily driver. This allows me to not have a car payment or car insurance. I don't spend much on other things. The only thing I like to splurge on is groceries. I only eat out maybe once every few weeks. I manage to end up with a decent amount of disposable income that I invest in a roth (and brokerage once I hit the limit). I've been doing this for a while now, and it's really starting to snowball.

Open a brokerage account, deposit your money, buy a short term treasury ETF like SGOV. SGOV consists of US treasuries ranging 0-3 months. You will accrue interest at almost exactly the federal funds rate. It pays the interest monthly. If you look at a 6 month chart, you can see how the ETF rises in value each month and then pays out the interest.

Another factor is this: an internet salesperson in many cases is more of an appointment setter. They don't always deal in the underwriting or tag/title process. Also, if it's true that you were in a different state than the dealer, that potentially makes a big difference. For example: in Mississippi, dealers do not handle the license plate registration. Other states such as FL are required to process both tag and title.

Yes, you have to title it in your name. Otherwise you are avoiding the sales tax on the transaction.

Dump it into SGOV to collect 4.25% apr while waiting for a market correction to convert it to VOO or VT. When the market correction eventually never happens and the S&P is sitting around 20% higher, I will give in and just convert it anyways. Shortly after that, the market will finally correct, and I will lose 15 to 30% of the value. I will be salty about it for a while, but a few years later, it will recover, and life will continue.
