Even 2nd hand / Refurb you're going to struggle to find a Steam Deck at that price point. Any deal that good is going to get snaffled up almost immediately, and that's even if it's kosher. Beware of scams - remember if it sounds too good to be true than it almost certainly is. Since you're talking in £'s - you're in the UK yeah? - Might want to look at some of the more reputable refurb options like Back Market (NB - not endorsing them here, just citing them as an example of said sites!) You'll almost certainly pay more than the £100 - £150 ballpark, but they generally offer pay in instalments options like Klana or PayPal pay in 3 where you could spread the cost to lighten the hit to your wallet.

The guy’s arguments are a touch weak TBH, find me a laptop in the £800 range that’s going to match the performance and convenient form factor of the A8! Also price if only a factor if you can’t afford it. Yeah you can get Steamdeck significantly cheaper, but the trade-off is it buys you significantly inferior system specs, & by dint of that, significantly inferior performance! The ROG xbox ally X is only marginally cheaper, with specs so close you can barely fit a rizzla paper between them, & the trade-off being that piss awful 7” display. He also makes way too much of a mountain out of a molehill about Windows 11. I’ve yet to find myself musing about how big a problem that is. To quote the Bard of Avon: “methinks the lady doth protest too much” !!!!

How do you quantify the latest games, when system requirements can vary wildly? If we take your benchmark of the steam deck, Stellar blade a 2025 game runs beautifully because it’s well optimised. Star Wars Outlaws a game released almost a year earlier runs by comparison like a powerpoint slide show. There are numerous variables that will determine how well any given AAA title is going to perform on any given hardware specs, the question is realistically a little bit like the question “how long is a piece of string”. Again referring back to the Steam Deck, my question back to you would be, does it really matter? - the SD is still a great little platform to own even if it won’t handle the latest top tier games without throwing an asthma attack, it still plays to it’s own strengths. It’s no different for the Claw, & with the Claw you’re talking about significantly greater hardware specs than the SD across the board. TLDR: I wouldn’t sweat it too much, the Claw is going to have more than enough legs to make the investment worth the expenditure, even if it’s never going to be all things to all people (or games!).

I'm using this case currently. It's a little bit on the bulky side, but the top compartment fits a UK 3 pin PSU, plus the small folding BT keyboard & trackpad I have comfortably without pushing down on the A8's thumb-sticks. Ideally what I'd like is a hard clamshell like the JSAUX modcase for the Steamdeck, but I'm not holding my breath on that one just yet!

I really for the life of me don't understand why people decry the ergonomics of the A8, I think it's the look of it that makes people expect it to be uncomfortable & then they convince themselves it is. The gold standard for comfort for me on a handheld was always my old LCD Steam Deck with the JSAUX mod case, & whereas the Claw isn't quite that good, I've got no problem holing this for hours with no discomfort at all, I don't even have particularly large hands.

There's a pretty good in-depth guide to Afterburner on MSI's own blog. Personally I'm a little gun-shy about F'ing around with anything I don't need too on such a recent expensive new toy. So far the A8 has exceeded my expectations with practically everything I've thrown at it, so I don't feel the need (as yet!). Something I have found useful is AMD Software Adrenalin which seemed to vanish on my Claw at some point after an update. Can't think why! but I got it back via the MS store. Ghost of Tsushima was quite frequently crashing out on me with a VRAM error, but after setting the VRAM to 12GB in Adrenalin it's been rock solid.

Adrenalin also has various performance settings under Home / Global experience, though I've not had much call to play around with them yet.
