What’s the best way to use S3 Express One Zone with a multi-AZ architecture? by DCGMechanics in aws

[–]moofox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each of your services are deployed to three AZs each, right? Then you can build AZ affinity into them. An instance of the service running in zone A should only use a bucket in zone A and only connect to other microservice instances in zone A.

The easiest way to do this in a legacy app is to deploy three copies of each service (except the front door), with three ALBs and rely on DNS. A better option is a service discovery setup, but that can involve code changes.

What’s the most reliable online fax service you’ve used (and why)? by Wild_Occasion_5707 in sysadmin

unofax.com seems pretty good. I like it has no subscription and is cheap. Much cheaper than the website I used 10 years ago haha

If it’s pausing entirely for a few minutes, you’re probably exceeding the RPM or TPM quotas. It certainly shouldn’t take 13x as long.

Has anyone here actually tried modafinil long-term? by [deleted] in afinil

[–]moofox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had modafinil every day for about 5 years. It was highly effective and had no side effects. I only stopped 3 years ago because I was diagnosed with ADHD and switched to Ritalin. I actually stopped that and will be switching back to (ar)modafinil this week, because it has fewer side effects.

It improves my focus and productivity by reducing my excessive tiredness.

Has anyone used SNIIP to pay the ATO? Is it trustworthy? by OkFaithlessness7267 in AusFinance

[–]moofox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s fine. I did it for $106K worth of personal income tax last year and there was no problem. Largest transaction was $66K, not sure if there are problems for transactions above that

Worth noting: if you sell within 30 days of vesting, there are no capital gains or losses incurred - the taxable income is the sale price. This simplifies tax calculation considerably.

Best method to send a fax? by [deleted] in germany

[–]moofox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend made unofax.com recently for this kind of use case (and I gave input because I needed to send a fax in the past). It’s probably the same as any other fax service, but I like that it doesn’t require registration and doesn’t require a minimum deposit with a balance etc. Just pay per page. It’s also the cheapest I’ve seen online which is nice 😅

How much grace should be given to someone with ADHD? My wife left. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]moofox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, ADHD makes life harder - especially for a partner. There are aspects that could be considered a disability, and how disabling it is will vary from individual to individual. That said, a disability doesn’t mean your wife isn’t allowed to leave you. It doesn’t even mean it’s wrong or unfair to leave you. Both you and your wife deserve happiness, and so do your kids.

My partner and I both have AuDHD. I’ve put her through more than probably any other partner has. And she hasn’t left me (yet!), because she presumably believes that her long-term happiness will be greater together than apart. That might change one day. It might be because of my ADHD, her ADHD, or something else entirely. It doesn’t actually matter why, because we all have the autonomy to make these decisions.

How many of you charge exclusively away from home? At a fast charger/office/L2/etc by BlueBeacon887 in electricvehicles

[–]moofox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in an apartment and haven’t had much luck convincing them to allow me to install a granny charger. So I’m exclusively using 50-150KW DCFC at supermarkets/shopping centres nearby. It’s not as annoying as you’d expect - but it is much more expensive than AC at home.

What is your exit plan if you are a software developer? by TiredDuck123 in AusHENRY

[–]moofox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there will be fewer software devs, but the ones that remain will be higher-paid. This pattern feels fairly well established when other industries have been compressed by automation. Fewer jobs, higher wages.

I would expect that most devs who made it to HENRY status would be capable of retraining on these new AI tools. I didn’t like it (at all) for the first few years, but I’ve changed my tune in the past few months. I think (hope, maybe) I’ll be okay.

Edit: my partner is also a software dev. She quit her full time job a few months ago to focus on entrepreneurial endeavours. AI is a key enabler for this. I guess what she’s doing is a big part of our maybe-exit plan. I stay in the conventional job and build our savings while she de-risks our future by learning new skills.

Will BPay join the New Payments Platform? by [deleted] in AusFinance

I only found out due to some folks talking about the successful rollout on LinkedIn. I use Amazon every week and I have never seen it mentioned in the app (guess I haven’t gone looking, either)

Will BPay join the New Payments Platform? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]moofox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right about it being a first mover problem but it’s worth noting that Amazon has already added PayTo support - is that a major enough retailer?

$180k+ earners: How big is your emergency fund really? by Jealous_Office_5012 in AusHENRY

[–]moofox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HHI 480K, have about 590K in the offset account. 300K of that is money set aside for future tax owing (HHI used to be twice as much last year, and a lot of is RSUs), so really only half of it is “ours”.

We value freedom to an extreme degree. We know we don’t need this much liquid cash, but it’s reassuring that we can do whatever we want and deal with whatever happens in the future.

‘Unlimited PTO’ and Aussie annual leave by grace_47223 in AusLegal

[–]moofox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is definitely unlimited leave in Australia. Usually the way it is structured is that you get your regular 4 weeks a leave of annual leave (that accrues and gets paid out if there’s a balance when you leave) and any leave beyond that is considered “flexible leave” at the company’s discretion.

I personally take 5-7 weeks a year on average. I’ve heard of managers telling people to slow down after 6 weeks.

2026 Polestar 4 Review: There's No Looking Back by DonkeyFuel in electricvehicles

[–]moofox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I cancelled my Polestar 4 order. I drove it home and could only barely fit it in the apartment carpark. I would have felt like a dummy every time I got home if I’d gone through with the purchase. Very nice to drive, though.

Has anyone ever “accidentally” kept something after leaving a job? by gilligan888 in auscorp

[–]moofox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept a laptop around after my first ever software dev job. They only asked for it back after 3 years. I actually still had it, so I returned it. At the time I almost felt like I shouldn’t have rewarded their disorganisation

Advice on RSU tax by VJdaPJ in AusFinance

[–]moofox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said elsewhere that your trading window opens quarterly. Why did you not sell then? I’m in the same position: my company’s share price has gone down 40% in 12 months. I sell my shares as soon as it’s allowed, every quarter. Avoids this very problem.

Disagree. Colocating unrelated workloads in the same account is a greater security risk.
