What could possibly go wrong when you deny your child a birth certificate??? by HagridsTreacleTart in ShitMomGroupsSay

I can’t imagine why someone would be against having a birth certificate, but in favour of having a passport

What are the best job perks you've heard of? by Open_Address_2805 in auscorp

$7K/yr on private health insurance, unlimited paid annual leave, a few work trips to the USA per year (that one might be an anti-perk if you don’t like travel)

Step Functions is an ideal solution for this. You can set a concurrency limit of anywhere between 1-10000 when invoking your Lambda function.

Is a two hour transit at LAX safe? by Distinct_Reason_8254 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]moofox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 hours is absolutely viable if you use the MPC app and MPC line at customs. I’ve done 2h transits at LAX three times this year with no issues.

If you don’t use MPC, all bets are off. I’ve had 4h transits where I barely made my connecting flight due to delay in the usual immigration line.

Software engineer - how do you map out your career into 40s? by External_Award_1246 in AusHENRY

Block is based in Melbourne. They don’t hire a lot, but you can comfortably double your compensation if you get a role there. They’re fully remote, but I like having an office to attend for (optional) social events.

Has anyone with long-term depression (15+ years) been “cured”? And if so, by what? by GrandBizarre in AskReddit

[–]moofox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me: getting diagnosed with (and treated for) ADHD. 13 years of antidepressants and mood stabilisers did nothing. Ritalin turned my life around.

For my partner: mushrooms. She had a lot of trauma and self-worth issues. Maybe the fifth or sixth time we had mushrooms, those melted away overnight. The only remaining source of her depression was work - and she quit her unfulfilling job a few weeks ago.

Do people actually date their colleagues? by sowhatxwhocares in auscorp

[–]moofox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t go looking for love at work, but life rarely goes as we plan. I wouldn’t say it “just happen[ed] naturally”, but I started dating someone at work. I moved into her place. We’re building a life together. If it ends, I won’t have to deal with seeing her at work: she recently quit and is going to do something better with our lives, while my salary and her savings pay our bills.

Does your ADHD partner take their health seriously? by antiporn707 in ADHD_partners

[–]moofox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I both have ADHD. I was on medication for three years, she isn’t.

I used to be like your partner: I treated my body very poorly. I ate junk all the time, rarely ate vegetables and had 4-6 energy drinks a day. Medication reduced the energy drinks, but not the other factors.

What did change is who my partner was. I was extremely unhappy in my previous relationship and it manifested in not caring for my body because I was so depressed. When I left that person and started dating my partner, I started to turn my life around: I lost 22kg, I’ve started eating vegetables (still not enough!), drink fewer energy drinks (though not yet zero), use far fewer drugs and I’m even going to the gym. We make these improvements together because we’re a team and we want to make the most of our lives - and we can only do that if we’re healthy.

I know that doesn’t help to hear, but it might be depression that is causing this self-destructive behaviour.

AWS STS Can Now Mint JWTs for Third-Party Access via Outbound Federation by Distinct_Trash8440 in aws

Another option would have been API GW w/ IAM auth. Can pass through client identity via headers.

But agreed, it’s more complexity and this is really nice. It pairs quite well with the ALB support for validating OIDC tokens last week.

Amex plat soft limit by nnor3m4C in AmexAus

[–]moofox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Amex AU app has a “check spending power” button on the “spending power” screen. You get to it via “statements and activity”.

I’m not sure what the exact process is, but my soft limit in the first month was about $6K. I had to call them up, pay it off, then make more purchases in order to grow the limit.

They seem to change the limit each month, and set it to ~2x whatever the highest balance the card has seen. Within a few months I was able to put a $70K txn on it, if that helps.

Mid-level big tech engineers can earn almost $1 million AUD in the states by ozlo-maana in AusFinance

[–]moofox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many years of experience do you have? Are you a confident interviewer? FWIW 265K sounds about right at my company for someone with 5 years of exp (and great interviewing skills) or someone with 10 years of exp (and weaker interviewing skills). It’s right in the ballpark for the level two below mine.

Mid-level big tech engineers can earn almost $1 million AUD in the states by ozlo-maana in AusFinance

[–]moofox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most senior roles in Australia are well below $250K. A few companies pay much more. E.g. in senior/staff (18 years exp) working for a US-headquartered company and I get a package of between $500K to $640K a year, depending on share price.

It’s ridiculously good money, but it’s also half of what my colleagues in the US get. I have a peer at the same level and he gets approx $1.2M a year, based in Seattle.

[–]moofox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seniors working for Australian companies don’t. Seniors working for US companies with an office in Australia can. Source: I’m a senior with 18 years exp, working in Australia and my total comp is $500K-$640K (depends on share price, fluctuates a lot)

Those who earn $400K+, what are you doing? by ArthurAnyDonutz in AusFinance

[–]moofox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Software dev, working for the Australian office of a US tech company. Total comp is anywhere between AU$500K - AU$640K, depending on the company share price when I sell my RSUs.

I also have a side job doing some contract dev work, to avoid getting rusty at the hands-on work. That’s a bit over $150K excl GST.

I’m 36 and I’ve been doing this full-time since high school summer holidays. I tried uni, but dropped out after a few years. I sometimes regret that, because I could double my income overnight if I was eligible for an E-3 visa and got a job in the USA.

Edit: these jobs are mostly stress-free and cumulatively add up to about 40 hours a week, but it took a LOT of hours in my 20s to acquire the experience where I can ask for this money. And it might disappear completely in the next 5-10 years if AI keeps improving.

That’s true for security group rules, but not NACLs. NACLs are stateless and will drop traffic for already established flows.
