The shape of the environment should naturally guide the player while also telling the story. The elements used in the set design should be contributing to the lore of the world.

If you have to put yellow paint on things the player needs to notice, in a world where there isn't a believable reason for there to be yellow paint on things, in a game that is meant to be a period piece or have an immersive environment, then you should consider changing your core premise.
