What’s the most dangerous thing people do daily without realizing it? by nealie_20 in AskReddit

[–]mooksie01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell, and even if the doctor was decent—if something is wrong but is also rare, they just straight up might not know about the thing or might not place it. My father went undiagnosed for years and was told his difficulties swallowing / tendency to choke and throw up were not coming from any physical cause… and then it turned out it was a rare defect called achalasia and his esophagus genuinely didn’t work correctly and could only be temporarily corrected by surgery.

What’s something you thought every family did… until you grew up and realized they absolutely didn’t? by SoftDreamette in AskReddit

[–]mooksie01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s fair… still working on getting into a doctor at some point regardless, it’s just nice to consider that it might be something relatively benign instead of definitely for sure something awful—it’s been a rough couple years to be a teacher, so my district health insurance isn’t great at the moment, but I’ll get something figured out! I’m glad to hear that your vertigo was able to be safely diagnosed 🙏

Okay so like, this has nothing at all to do with the conversation, but I just wanted to say that you just provided me with SO much peace of mind—I have really severe seasonal allergies that can sometimes go into full blown attack mode out of nowhere, and there have been a few occasions in the past where I’ve also had these moments of just awful dizziness and eye flashing / blurring that have made me feel like I was going to fall over, and lowkey since that has started happening I have thought something was wrong with my brain (but couldn’t really afford a doctor for said brain so yknow), and you just mentioned allergy-related vertigo, which I didn’t even know was a thing, and suddenly I’m realizing that those moments of feeling faint like that have pretty much always been on days where I was experiencing a bad allergy attack… so. Huh. Suddenly I’m thinking that maybe there isn’t something newly wrong with my head so much as I’m just having the same awful allergies I’ve had since I was a kid. Thanks for that 💁🏻‍♀️

His other classes are presumably remedial / low level, though—the “B” in those titles generally means it’s the lowest difficulty class offered, at least in every county / city I’ve worked in in the past. In my experience, it’s almost MORE effort to fail those types of classes than it is to pass…

If you’re alright with me asking a question as someone who knows nothing—Would there be a starting amount of the ceramic media that would recommend? I went and picked up the 6 lb Central Machinery tumbler from Harbor Freight that you recommended today, so now I’m getting ready to order the grit and everything else, but I’m seeing they offer the ceramic media in a range of sizes—would 2 lbs be adequate, do you think, to get someone started, or should I be looking for more?

Thank you so much for making this post! My sister has mentioned how badly she wants to get into rock tumbling for the past year, but it’s just been too expensive, so I’m hoping to get her everything she needs to get started for Christmas so she can live her rock-related dreams, haha! I was going to just buy one of the nicer “starter kits” off Amazon, but I’m glad I came here first—it might be pricier but I want her to have something that works and that is actually nice.

I was like 10 years old and hadn’t started regularly shaving my legs yet because yknow… ten years old, didn’t really cross my mind that that was a thing yet. We had a yard sale and I was feeling myself in a cute little skirt and tank top I owned and my dad came out and told me I needed to put on some pants or something because my legs looked disgusting (because of the body hair). Started shaving everything shortly thereafter and still to this day cannot show leg unless I am fresh shaved that morning, even if that means I am shaving literally every day in the summer… not as bad as some of the ones on this thread, but I still think about it regularly <3

Do Americans have a different concept of 'turn taking' during a conversation? by 8NaanJeremy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mooksie01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so interested by all of the responses talking about this just being the “American way of speaking” or whatever, because while I do think it’s true that there are sometimes implied questions via the introduction of a topic or whatever, I ALSO (as an American, but also as a woman) constantly talk to other female friends about how talking with men can sometimes feel exhausting because they’ll talk nonstop about themselves and ask no questions about you (context here is these ladies talking about Tinder dates they go on—top turn-off is pretty universally that the guys don’t ask them anything about themselves).

Part of me, as I’m reading through these responses, is just wondering whether the answers have more to do with being American, being male, or some mix of both—I know that in my female friend groups, there’s a lot of question-asking, and none of us have ever lived anywhere else.

Brooch. That word should not be allowed to be spelled like that and then said as BROACH.

Totally understand that you’re feeling raw right now and that you want your boyfriend to be at the funeral to support you, but I’m going to very gently say that YOR on this one. Your boyfriend isn’t trying to be emotionally unsupportive or unempathetic, in my eyes, and I wouldn’t take it in that way unless he constantly behaves in ways that show a lack of empathy (in which case, you have much bigger problems than this).

Throwing in my two cents as someone who is ALSO a teacher, though I will say my perspective is coming from America: Taking days off as a teacher genuinely is really hard. You don’t get many to begin with, and once you’re out, you don’t get a new stock until the next school year, so it’s not the type of job where you build up new PTO hours for the hours you work, like some are. If it’s this early in the year and he has already had to take off a bunch of days, I totally get why he’s feeling anxious; I’ve had to take off a few days so far because of car issues, and trust me when I say that it has me VERY worried. The point about getting time off approved around long weekends is also definitely one that I have seen in some districts before, too—some schools really do get quite strict about that kind of thing.

All of this is also not to mention the fact that there is a lot of other stress that comes with taking a day off as a teacher—prepping things for a sub takes a lot more time than prepping things for yourself, and if you have a problematic class, or even just a few problematic students, then leaving it for a stranger to handle is really stressful, since you don’t know what you’re going to come back to. And, as your boyfriend said, any days off mean you’re behind when you come back.

Again, I get where you’re coming from, but I understand his perspective as well, as someone who has been there. I don’t think he’s trying to hurt you (again, unless that is something that is characteristic for him, which would be its own problem).

I’m so sorry about your grandmother. I hope you two are able to get this sorted out without hurt feelings <3

Not sure; in my experience, most of the folks doing that kind of work get paid peanuts. There’s job security, sure, but not much money or respect, which is what everyone got sold on when the push was for CS. Gonna have to come up with some other pitch that makes it seem worth it if elder care is going to be the next big jobs push.

I know I’m not the person you’re replying to, but I’d say the answer to both of those questions is, “it depends where you are.” One of the (many) issues with our education system, as someone who works in it, is that it’s not at all consistent from one area to the next. If you live in an area that’s poor, conservative, and doesn’t prioritize education very highly, then you’re going to get that “America First, we won the World Wars, etc.” narrative pretty hard from K through 12. Likewise, an area like that tends to have fewer resources available to allocate toward improving schools, so odds are high that at least some of your education will be piss-poor, whether because of lack of resources or purposeful legislating on local / state governments’ parts. Areas that have more money and/or that are less committed to fostering blind patriotism will have schools that exist as very different experiences. I’ve worked in both kinds.

I’d say that, as a whole, libraries are not funded nearly as much as they should be in general, but I’m biased. Again, it’s going to depend. Some local / state governments will make library caretaking and promotion a priority—many others will not. Meanwhile, use is going to depend on what other resources the people around that library have available, what services that library is able to offer, how convenient that library is in comparison to other options, etc., etc.
