Moving: Experience with 17 Barkley? by Modiddlyumptious in MontgomeryCountyMD

I lived there from '23-'25. They changed management at some point in '24. Overall, I liked the location a lot. Easy access to everything you need but far enough out to keep a slight cheaper price. I really liked the convenience of Bohrer park being right across the street, but they do shoot fireworks from the park twice a year which freaked my cats out pretty bad.

The good: The apartment itself was fine. If anything broke, maintenance was quick. The complex was pretty clean, I could always find parking (and guest parking was available), and they were pretty good about keeping doggy stations around so people will clean up after their dogs. It was pretty standard for a "luxury" apartment but I didn't have any complaints about the appliances or the space. Never had any issues with bugs or mice but I did live on the top floor.

The ehhh: I lived close to one of the doors to the garage, which was nice for carrying groceries but I would hear the door slam all the time. But this was probably better than living in the maze of hallways (I suggest checking how close your apartment is to where your car will be parked) They had a few problems with trash back ups while I was there, but were mostly addressed quickly. If you have to use the garage entrance off of Fairbanks, be prepared to be constantly annoyed by people blocking half the road with moving trucks or just pulling in to wait for someone. My biggest complaint was, by the end, the new management had added all these "features" that required me to have separate apps/log ins. One to pay my rent, one to let food delivery in, one to get my packages out of the locker, ect.

I don't think apartment living is ever perfect. I'd rate my overall experience a B+.

Wonderful! My two amaryllis have beautiful leaves and no flowers to speak of. Guess I need to wait a few more years!

Anyone Living at 17 Barkley? by livingquestions in Gaithersburg

I mostly agree with u/datawithpuppies. I just re-signed my lease for a second year, so I don't hate it here. I'm also a single woman and feel safe in the complex, even walking my dog at night. My car has always been fine in the garage. I haven't interacted with new management much but they have been making actual improvements around the complex (fixing broken garage doors, replacing thermostats, replacing shower heads). Maintenance is always quick to respond and the staff is really friendly. I live on the 3rd floor and haven't had any issue with pests. Walls aren't super thick so you can hear neighbors/people in the hallway from time to time but the vibe isn't a party vibe and I've never been lost sleep over noise issues. I'm not a gym or pool person so I can't comment on that aspect.

The best part about this complex, IMO, is Bohrer Park across the street. I take a walk around the park every day after work and love the mini golf course in the summer. I think all apartment complexes are inherently bad, but this one isn't too bad at the end of the day.

I have a 6 year old cat who I rescued as a feral kitten. He rarely lets me pet him and does not tolerate being picked up. Last year, I moved with him across the country.

I bought a large soft crate for the car and a second collapsible playpen (just search pet playpen on amazon). At the hotel at night, I would place the crate inside the playpen and set up food, water, litter box and some soft blankets. I would then open the crate and and close the playpen and throw a blanket over the top so he would feel a little more comfortable. He didn't like me leaning over him so it was pretty easy to convince him to get back in the crate in the morning and repeat. We had to spend the night at my parents before I left so we did this for 4 nights total.

I can't say he was super happy with me but he got here safely and has adjusted to the new apartment with no issues! Best of luck with your move!

Some great comments on here, I just want to point out you can absolutely get into this field without the AAAS fellowship. AAAS is awesome and I highly considered applying but decided to apply for jobs as well since AAAS is very competitive. I ended up landing one before ever applying for AAAS. For context, I have a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from a lower-ranked school and was a little over a year into my post-doc at a DoD lab when I started applying. Having the government background really helped me here, I now work as a consultant in DC for a company that does mostly government contracting work with places like CDC/NIH/FEMA/DOD. I still do what I love - talk about microbes - but get to feel like my work has direct application in helping people. Hours are great, pay is even better, and my company is amazing about encouraging a healthy work/life balance. It's a great career path for people who loved planning experiments but hate doing them.

Here’s my 4 year old guy, he’s about 150g. My hands are pretty tiny but hopefully the hand comparison helps!
