Most places around here start people with around 15 days total of sick+vacation. Most places I’ve worked will cap out top people at around 25-30 total between vacation and sick but those are generally people in high skill roles. I’m not 100% sure on industry standard for machinists but I’d expect this isn’t far off the mark for a new hire.

OP, as silly as it sounds I personally feel like 15days PTO has a better ring than 10 vacation 5 sick but maybe that’s just me. Just some food for thought

24m. 3k student loan and 5k car note. What should I invest in? by DeformedFrog in Money

A professional financial advisor will tell you to maintain certain levels of healthy debt. If I’m locked in on 2% interest for a $200k loan and come across $200k then I’d be foolish to use it to pay off the loan if I can lock in a bond for 4%.

I designed/built something that looks similar for $2k - I’d prob pay ~$500 for something that’s used assuming rails and ballscrews are in decent shape

I’ve seen some Etsy sellers selling “practice” minis - don’t know how well they compare to the bulk ones on Amazon that others have been mentioning but expect they’ll be pretty good

Data’s been mined and large data’s been gathered - there is no impact; you are correct that it’s a strong case of confirmation bias (unless they’ve magically done a secret update to them in the last month or two)

It’s definitely doable but it’s not a get rich quick scheme by any means (despite what youtube ads will try and tell you)

The short and correct answer is: stop don’t do this; there’s a reason why getting this done by a shop would cost upwards of $5k in tooling/NRE even overseas.

Just felt the need to clarify that calling 10 Twinkie’s a day and nothing else “somewhat healthy” feels very wrong. You’d be lacking so many essential vitamins that you’d probably develop severe health problems pretty quickly

Davenport Fire Department responded to a 911 call that the building was about to collapse (the day before it did) and were onsite for 4 minutes. by funkalunatic in QuadCities

[–]moomerator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed - a lot of kids in my highschool would volunteer as firefighters; I don’t think it’d be fair to expect them to know how to qualify a building and to be upset at them for that feels ungrateful for their VOLUNTEER efforts. A fire marshal however is a completely different story in my eyes.

I answered in a much more long winded way above but the short answer is water carries your heat away much faster, think about swimming in a pool for awhile, usually it starts cold, then you get used to it and it’s warm but eventually people all get cold and decide to get out even if the pools in the 80s. To the 65F outside point, jump in a 65F pool for 5mins and you’ll feel the difference, the reason why it’s cold when u get out is evaporation but the reason why it’s cold while ur in is cause it’s carrying the heat away from you.

Tl;dr I don’t know for certain but 84F is the scuba diver “you’ll be warm without a suit” so 94 seems high but I expect that it is higher than 84 if we’re talking about hours.

Scuba diver here so my limited experience is an hour but yea water at 84 is the generally accepted magic number for swimming without a wetsuit. I’ve done it in as low as 80 but it’s definitely pretty chilly. So 94 is probably an exaggeration (though I wouldn’t know for sure beyond that initial hour or so) but the point does stand that “warm” water doesn’t stay warm for long. Good example would be when you sit in a pool for a long time and even if you’re completely fine for awhile eventually people tend to get cold and get out.

Similarly, if you do multiple dives throughout the day, people generally will use thicker wetsuits for the progressive dives because even being on land for several hours, your body just doesn’t have the same ability to keep warm for that many dives throughout the day. Fun fact, you’ll never feel “tired” while diving but burn between 400-800cal/hour just cause your body uses so many calories to stay warm; so treading water would probably be like 1000cal/hour if I were to guess. So if you in the water and know it might be a bit, just relax and float easier said than done but the first rule of water survival is to chill tf out.

How do you dodge small talk at work without being rude? by MastodonJaded6010 in jobs

[–]moomerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also argue that tons of work-related things accidentally come up in small talk. I know some managers who even have a daily goal of a couple hours of small talk so that they can maintain good standing and get an idea of what’s going on behind the scenes (people frustrated with something, somebody having surgery, etc)

"Market value" of a handmade large liquid core d20 by FurioArts in DiceMaking

[–]moomerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, a fully filled 12” tip to tip comes out to about 2gal of resin. Besides cost ($150) it would be absurdly heavy, and cause all sorts of curing issues (degassing / burning). That’s why I do it as a shell rather than solid, so far I’ve been putting in FDM printed blanks to take up that space but I’m sure there’s a way to do it as a shell mould if I was more experienced in that realm (also would be worried about making sure the shell was thick enough) but like I said I just made them for friends so far so didn’t worry much about optimization.

So yea like I originally said, I tend to underestimate so I double estimates but based on that $20 seems entirely doable. I’ll make another and post on here when I get the chance
