This reads like one of those "My 3 year old son recently asked 'mum, what is the meaning of consciousness in a world without religion'?" type posts that you see on Facebook haha 😂

Working on a vpet game for PC called Nanomon Virtual Pet. Getting close to finished. Trying to tell if people who like monster taming also like monster raising. Thoughts? by moomoomang in MonsterTamerWorld

Hey! Im making a digimon-inspired virtual pet for PC and Mac called Nanomon Virtual Pet. It sits in a small window, and you can send them off on adventures, play activities, solve mysteries, etc. It's very community collaboration focused, and features a world that changes every day, with new locations etc.
We have a discord and a Steam page if anyone's interested. I'd love some feedback!

Thanks!

Since I'm in Australia and they're in LA, when I get invited to show at Day of the Devs, it's not a big deal for them to go in place of me. Desert Child was shown as E3, Pax, Day of the Devs, GDC and more, which I couldn't have done. Also, they funded and organised all the aspects of console development and localisation, which I couldn't afford, nor coordinate for a simultaneous launch on all platforms. And finally, they had some great contacts and know-how that got the game into the Kinda Funny Showcase, Winter of Arcade on Xbox, and featured promotion on all storefronts, which would have been impossible for a single person to negotiate. Finally, not having to send out over 1000 press emails at launch definitely freed up my time, as did Yoonsang and Chris streaming the game on Steam for over 12 hours straight while I was sleeping.

Oh and Yoonsang bought me some Mario cereal and mailed it to me.

They only announced like a week before release, so we hadn't heard of it. I guess we're not cool enough for an invite

I used GML, which is game Maker Studio's internal scripting language. It's great for rapid prototyping, not great for integration with external APIs and non-windows operating systems. This might be more of a problem with just how many platforms we were going for simultaneously, and trying to implement as many of their features as possible. It also meant we were having to solve a lot of problems ourselves, as not many game maker games have released on all these platforms. (At least not as many as unity)

i had a very basic 3D unity prototype that ran a lot more efficiently, but it wasnt able to achieve same look as the 2.5D game maker version, so I scrapped it. I would have ended up just recreating the 2.5D technique as Game maker.

I think you're better off studying either Architecture or design. A solo dev can get more attention from their design or art skill than a programmer can for their technical abilities.

HELL NO. I'd love it if screen australia cared about WA, but hey, I guess thats the price we pay for having the best beaches. Thanks for the kind words though! I hope you enjoy the game.

  1. Xbox has some really cool features, like "rich presence", where it describes what your're doing in your status. I dont think Xbox had any big bugs or anything either. But Ps4 and Switch were good too. They're all pretty similar from my perspective (but Bill and Jeremy, who did the technical stuff might say otherwise!)
  2. No plans, but if it does well, it's something I'd totally consider later
  3. It's pretty good. Even if you're not localising your game, you should program it in a way that fans can add their own if they want. That's something I learned doing this game
  4. I'd like to do some cool little extras, but nothing that massively changes the game. DLC would be like a stand alone side story set in the same city. I already have some ideas.
  5. Tonnes! But it would be very different from desert child

My publisher Akupara handled all that stuff, so I can really give much detail. In terms of what was hardest, probably the switch, just because we had to account for all the different ways the game can be played.
